One of the biggest projects I have done and is still going on is my Sea Scout voyage. We have been working on it for two summers and plan to finish next summer. This requires tons of work even when we are not sailing. We frequently work to achieve our goal. The hard work does not stop when we are off the boat. We are constantly working on the boat or working on items for the boat. Whether it is repairing sails or fiber glassing, we are constantly busy. A large portion of our trips also are us spending time making upgrades and repairs to the boats. Numerous times I have had to go down in the water to replace screws on our depth sounder. The boat is fairly old so engine work is abundant. If we do not give it our all, these problems are just
A Voyage Long And Strange: On the Trail of Vikings, Conquistadors, Lost Colonists, and Other Adventurers in Early America
After settling the close debate as to where the American’s wished to build their canal and purchasing the area under the 1903 Hay-Herran treaty, the U.S. needed only permission to unearth the ground. Colombia wasn’t too fond of the idea and thus rejected all of America’s efforts. Negotiations with the country went quite poorly as well. Arthur Beaupré was chose to communicate with Colombia but negotiations continued to go poorly as, “he was frequently blunt, even dictatorial, in his
questions about where Columbus thought that he was traveling to, how his men treated the natives and how he couldn’t control his own men. To this Columbus said he thought he reached the Indies and that he couldn’t control what his men were doing when he wasn’t even there. The examiner at this point was very rude and interrupted Columbus to which he said. “I’m getting there and if you would stop interrupting me I would get there a little quicker.” In the end the examiner asked for one thing that Columbus would say to the Natives, and it was as follows, “I would say sorry your people are dead, but there is nothing I can do about it.”
Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Cat Woman; when you hear the word hero or heroine that is who you think of. The most famous heroes of all time, as well as the not so famous heroes such as Hazel, fit the archetype of a hero; they are all courageous, resourceful, and strong-willed. Most people don’t notice that almost all action/adventure movies and novels are the same. All of their stories fit the archetypal pattern of a heroic quest. A heroic quest consists of twelve steps that the hero completes throughout his or her journey. In this essay, I will be explaining the parallels between Watership Down by Richard Adams and the archetypal pattern of a heroic quest; as well as the parallels between
Exploration has always been a central theme in the development of the United States. The Louisiana Purchase, in 1803, made the government more eager to expand west. The newly acquired lands were in need of exploration. A team needed to be established to survey and document the new territory. The Lewis and Clark expedition would answer the unknown questions of the west. The expedition would not have been successful without the leadership, determination, discipline of the Corps of Discovery, and the cooperation of the Native Americans. President Jefferson wanted the leader to have the same passion and intensity toward the discovery of the west as he possessed. Jefferson hand-
In 1800 Thomas Jefferson was elected president. With the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, Jefferson had the vision of the United States growing from sea to sea. However, it was unknown what was out there. Jefferson planned an exploratory expedition and called upon Meriwether Lewis to lead it. Jefferson was very interested in what was in the west lands. Much was involved in the carrying out of this expedition; the preparations for this trip, what happened during their long journey west, and the return home. This expedition was very important in the development of the United States.
In the United States, there are many holidays that are celebrated by its citizens. Some of these holidays consist of individuals taking the day off from work and school, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s Day. During these days off, individuals have the chance to reflect on the day itself, and rejoice on the purpose of the holiday. Every holiday has a distinct and positive meaning towards the United States and its people, but there is one holiday in particular that is controversial in this aspect- the celebration of Christopher Columbus- Columbus Day. This controversy is JJJJJJ because even though Christopher Columbus had a big role in discovering America, he also was a terrible human being who tortured many. In my opinion, I believe that the celebration of discovering America should continue to be celebrated. Although, the holiday should be shifted from honoring Columbus, to instead celebrating the discovery of the United States of America by the indigenous people who were already settled in our land.
It was the 15th century, it was a quote unquote different century. They had many new forces and changes but that doesn’t justify what happened due to Christopher Columbus. In this i’m going to state why Columbus is a terrible person. He said Native Americans would make fine servants. With the fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever he wanted and or needed. Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, but he isn’t as good of a person as we were taught. Until now some people just thought he was the guy we got the day off for. Once you learn what he’s done you realize he wasn’t just the reason we didn’t have school on a monday. He was the reason thousands of native
For ages, society has celebrated the significant accomplishments of explorers that shaped our world. One of these explorers is highlighted every year by the controversial federal holiday, Columbus Day. While Christopher Columbus made impressive advancements in the world of sea navigation, his evil virtues surrounding his success taints the good. After thorough research, this analyst concludes that Columbus had more vices than virtues.
The Shipman’s Tale, one of the many tales in Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, is exactly suited to the Shipman’s personality and profession as given in “The Prologue.” The shipman is described by Chaucer in the prologue as very sneaky, deceitful, and even pirate-like. The Shipman’s tale matches his personality and profession because The Shipman’s Tale is one of trickery and con. The monk in the tale tricks both the merchant and the merchant’s wife out of their money. He also uses his relationship with the merchant to his advantage, because he knows the merchant would never suspect him of having sex with his wife. The shipman is also portrayed in the prologue to have no sense of remorse or feelings of sorrow.
The Seafarer by Burton Raffel was written during the Anglo-Saxon period where the Anglo-Saxon warriors lived to defend their King, like in the story Sir Gawain and The Green Knight. One of the warriors speaks about his challenges and begins saying that his story is not at all joyful. It is a story full of pain and suffering. The story paints a picture of what it means to be “dislocated”, “set out”, all by oneself and how badly it feels. “My feet were cast in icy bands, bound with frost, with frozen chains, and hardship groaned around my heart. Hunger tore at my sea-weary soul. No man sheltered on the quiet fairness of earth can feel how wretched I was”.(Raffel 1) The powerful imagery in this stanza sets the tone that the narrator is trying to
“The seafarer” by an anonymous anglo saxon scop focuses on personal torment. He is a who questions his life everyday wondering why he does this longing to find the answers. He remembers why he sils on the sea he loves the sight of land on the horizon seeking new shores and new adventures. The first section starts off with the seafarer talking about his constant internal conflict between sea and land. He hates that he is never home for his wife.
The epic journey of “The Old Man and the Sea” describes struggle, discipline and manhood. The main characters relationships exemplify how faith and skill overcome man’s adversity during life on the sea. Santiago’s growing relationship with the boy idealizes his statute as a father figure and develops his integrity and values towards the boy. Hemmingway shows us how an old fisherman’s will to overcome the sea’s obstacles proves his manhood to himself and the young boy. His skills and knowledge of the sea provide a positive influence for the young boy to become a great fisherman someday.

One of the next projects, also one of the largest was for me to make a new script that interfaced with a Google for education administrator console API in order to manage 8,000 Chromebooks. This was the first project that was given a firm dead line for completion because there was around 4,000
