Persnickety? What does it mean? Persnickety means “over particular or fussy, even attentive or observant”. Is Christopher boone, the main character and the protagonist of The Curious Incident of The dog in The Night Time , persnickety? Christopher Boone, the narrator and the protagonist The Curious Incident of The dog in The Night Time written by Mark Haddon, is an extremely unique character. Christopher proves to be unique because he is very curious, capable of great intelligence and he is most definitely persnickety. Christopher proves that he is curious, because he always wants to know anything and everything, no matter what the cost is. Christopher Boone is an autistic 15 year old. The gears in his mind never stop turning. He always …show more content…
This was all an act driven entirely by his very strong curiosity. Moving on to how Christopher Boone is portrayed as an incredibly intelligent fifteen year old. Christopher demonstrates extreme amounts of intelligence. He uses logical and smart solutions to come to conclusions or to solve anything and everything. Christopher does not have the average, basic mind of a teenager. He might be autistic, but his mind functions either mathematically or logically, which is not something everyone can be capable of doing all the time. Christopher explains here in a very simple and intelligent way, how to stop blood clots from forming by stating; “ You can stop this from happening by taking aspirin, and eating fish. Which is why Eskimos don’t get this sort of heart attack, because they eat fish and fish stops blood from clotting, but if they cut themselves, they can bleed to death.”(Haddon 28). This proves perfectly how Christopher demonstrates immediate knowledge of information related to a subject, that most people would not know about. This shows just how intelligent Christopher is and how he can even explain and share information right on the spot, which again most people would and could not do. Another perfect way of showing Christopher’s intelligence would be when he expresses his opinion supporting it with scientific facts about people’s belief of the universe; “[Christopher] said...Except that there might be if you went through a black hole, but a black hole is what
For my compare and contrast paper I decide to write about Christopher Columbus because he is big in geography and his name is known throughout the world, and not only in the United States, and he did a lot in his lifetime. And I know every student will learn about him in schools. Christopher Columbus is mentioned in Davis’ book; however, I also decide to do my own research as well.
Chris is a charismatic young man, but takes extensive measures to ensure he does not become too close with anyone. By going out into the wild without so much as a letter to his parents,
Christopher Columbus and John Smith will always be remembered for their ego in their leadership. For many residence of Virginia, John Smith is considered as a hero. However, recorded documents provide varying evidence on his leadership and life in general. On the other hand, Christopher Columbus is seen as an explorer who encountered the Americans and was able to achieve immorality to satisfy his egos. He took advantage of every opportunity and is considered to be a leader who did not accept no as an answer which enable him to succeed and even come back to influence after a great misfortune. It is however clear that the success of Smith and Columbus as leaders of exploration can be attributed to their egos. Their writings were full of imaginations and fiction and are considered by some historians to be liars about the newly discovered world.
Many people have formed strong opinions about the young Chris McCandless, from the story Into the Wild, who ventured into the Alaskan wilderness where he eventually starved to death there. These opinions vary in ideas, but one Shaun Callarman has claimed Chris to be “just plain crazy.” Despite what Shaun Callarman says, Chris was not crazy, but he was smart and intelligent or else he would not have lasted 113 days in the wild of Alaska. Mr. Callarman does have some arguments which are able to support his claim, but in the end I would definitely disagree with his analysis.
Relates to the book “Into the wild” because Chris took a big risk and didn’t take enough time to plan his adventure out too much. He thought he knew what he was doing but sometimes maybe taking advice from other people isn’t such a bad idea.
During Chris’s journey, he was able to accomplish a lot which most people would dream of. For instance, “By the end of summer in 1990, McCandless had driven his Datsun through Arizona, California, and South Dakota, where he worked at a grain elevator in Carthage.” Also, one day “A flash flood disabled his car, at which point he removed its license plates, took what he could carry, and kept moving on foot.” This proves that Chris McCandless was not ignorant. Chris McCandless always kept moving on no matter what conflict came his way. When he went into the wild, he was committed to staying there as long as he could. He survived for four months in the wild. However, he is
For four months Chris McCandless survived in the wild with no physical connection to society and less than the bare minimum any survivalist needed on an expedition. Ever since Chris was a child he was always embarking on crazy journeys, whether it was with his friends on the track team, or by himself; he always found a way to entertain and challenge himself to the extreme. Chris’ self-reliance also made him relatively confident in each task he upheld on himself. McCandless’ parents made remarks to how Chris, “Took pride in his ability to go without food for extended periods, and
He pushed society away in hopes of becoming a better person through an experience in nature. This connects with the principles of transcendentalism because he sees nature as something with power, and something that is necessary to life. Ralph Waldo Emerson explains this idea in his book Nature by saying “Have mountains, and waves, and skies, no significance but what we consciously give them, when we employ them as emblems of our thoughts?” This shows how being present in nature can make you appreciate and assign emotion to natural things. Another example of Chris’ appreciation of nature is when he killed the moose. He tried to use the moose as a source of food, which ultimately backfired on him. In his mind, the moose was a gift from nature. When he couldn't use the meat, he felt like he wasted this gift and that the moose should not have died for nothing. Chris stated that this was “One of the greatest tragedies of my life.” This is shows that he truly acknowledges how valuable life
Seeing the World in Different Ways Most people may see the world the same way. Christopher Boone, the main character and narrator in the book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon, definitely has his own very unique perspective, but Christopher has something most do not which makes him and his perspective so unique. Christopher has ASD, which causes him to see the world a completely different way than most. Christopher’s ASD causes him to be too logical about things, not understand certain situations, and goes against his dad’s rules to do what he believes is right. Firstly, Christopher takes things way to logically and does not understand things such as metaphors, idioms, or loose instructions.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time is told through the eyes of a fifteen year old boy named Christopher Boone. Christopher has a highly-functioning form of autism which allows him to understand complex mathematical problems, but also leaves him unable to comprehend many simple human emotions. His inability to understand metaphors, distinguish emotions, and his lack of imagination makes it possible to consider Christopher as functioning like a computer rather than functioning as a human being. Throughout the story, Christopher is faced with many challenges which he conquers using the stable and never changing system of mathematics. All of these factors suggest that Christopher does, in fact, function like a computer,
He is unreliable here because you do not know what his father is saying. This also proves though that Christopher is human because he freaks out and goes into shock from the discovery that his mother is actually alive. To be human, you also need to be reliable and Christopher proves this with his ability to explain complex math and science. “This is how you work out what prime number is. First, you write down... prime numbers”(11).
Moreover, Christopher’s first perspective informs the readers of the many privileges he has, despite his most obvious lack of ability privilege while on the autism spectrum. To start off, Christopher is an extremely structured character who plans things in great detail to a point where he can visualize it. This is exemplified in the novel when
Christopher Columbus’s life was filled with adventures and new beginnings that would leave a remarkable impression throughout history. Born in 1451 in Genoa, Columbus from an early age would become well acclimated to sailing as he began his career aboard a merchant ship and later study mathematics, astronomy, cartography, and navigation. Growing up and experiencing new thing Columbus began to come up with a plan different from all others to set sail across the Atlantic instead of going around the African continent. With his ideas being turned away from both Portugal and England it was Ferdinand and Isabella who took sympathy upon him and financial back his voyage as they both had hopes of gaining fame and fortune. In 1942, Columbus began his voyages and would carefully document each experience in the form of letters that would have a lasting impact on the world. I believe with the dramatic change in tones we see between the first and fourth letters it gives us the reader a true insight into Columbus’s mental and physical emotions over the years. Furthermore, these letters allow us to explore a part of history that is considered monumental while gaining information of what took place over a ten-year journey.
Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched. Although gifted with a superbly logical brain, Christopher is autistic. Everyday interactions and admonishments have little meaning for him.
Cognitively speaking, Christopher is mostly at age level. However, he has a learning disability and is estimated to be one year behind in regards to socialization skills and the ability to make friends. He is at age level in regards to formal operational thinking.
