The title of the reading that I chose to do a literary analysis on is Inferno by Dante Alighieri. What was this book about and what message does this particular ancient poem aim to explain? This epic poem was written in the fourteenth century and there were a lot of commentary involved in the story itself. Dante’s Inferno is widely seen as one of the greatest epics to ever grace textbooks. The text itself throughout this story speaks much to the concept of life and death and what the afterlife is like according to Dante and this is an epic that the Catholic church to this day denounces to a large degree despite the belief of purgatory, which is another reason why this epic became famous and is seen as a historical epic. This epic brought to life a new perspective on what the after-life might be like and that was sort of unheard of outside of religion at this point in time. This analysis is not meant to devolve into autobiographies of the writer and story or speak much to a summary of the story itself, but instead, meant to be more of an analysis of the literary text itself. This story has a lot of text in which are both per scholars original and this is one of the first epics to ever speak to the after-life and what it may or may not be about. One of the major themes that will be analyzed is the literature itself as well as analyzing literary devices within the context of the story. Dante's use of allegory in the Inferno greatly varies from Plato's "Allegory of the Cave" in purpose, symbolism, characters and mentors, and in attitude toward the world. An analysis of each of these elements in both allegories will provide an interesting comparison. Dante uses allegory to relate the sinner's punishment to his sin, while Plato uses allegory to discuss ignorance and knowledge. Dante's Inferno describes the descent through Hell from the upper level of the opportunists to the most evil, the treacherous, on the lowest level. His allegorical poem describes a hierarchy of evil.

Dante’s work Inferno is a vivid walkthrough the depths of hell and invokes much imagery, contemplation and feeling. Dante’s work beautifully constructs a full sensory depiction of hell and the souls he encounters along the journey. In many instances within the work the reader arrives at a crossroads for interpretation and discussion. Canto XI offers one such crux in which Dante asks the question of why there is a separation between the upper levels of hell and the lower levels of hell. By discussing the text, examining its implications and interpretations, conclusions can be drawn about why there is delineation between the upper and lower levels and the rationale behind the separation.
In Dante’s Inferno, the author Dante Alighieri described the journey of his fictionalized self going through Hell. Dante describes all nine circles as grisly and grave. Gustave Doré’s paintings relate the most to Dante’s descriptions. Doré’s paintings of the Inferno are dark and mysterious, which is how Dante explains Hell in his story. Doré does not use color in his paintings; all of his painting of the Inferno are black, white, and in some shade of grey. His paintings reflect the mood that Dante was trying to interpret in his story. This is why Dante would choose Gustave Doré to illustrate Inferno.

After crossing the Phlegethon, Dante the Pilgrim and Virgil cross into a dark forest where there are “no green leaves, but rather black in color, no smooth branches, but twisted and entangled, no fruit, but thorns of poison bloomed instead” (Dante, Inferno 186). The forest is depicted this way to give a picture of the barren nature of suicide. Dante sees the Harpies nesting and tearing at the trees surrounding them, “....in Greek mythology the Harpies are storm-winds which act as ministers of Divine vengeance, mysteriously snatching offenders away out of the visible world” (Dartmouth). The Harpies are a depiction of how those who commit suicide snatch themselves away from the visible world. He hears wails of torment within the woods all around him and Dante is confused by the noise and its origin. He first thinks that the yelling comes from individuals hiding behind the trees, but learns the truth once prompted by Virgil to break a branch. Dante tears off a piece of a “great thornbush.” The emphasis on the size of the bush may be a way to signify the importance of the man entrapped inside it, possibly like Medieval art in which artists stress the importance of a specific character by making it larger (Dartmouth). To Dante’s surprise, blood began to spew out of the branch, and the tree starts to speak directly to the Pilgrim. This tree, named Pier, committed suicide after being accused of treason. Pier continues to swear on “the new roots of this tree” that
At the start of the poem we find Dante in the dark forest(Inf. 1.2). Not much description is given maybe to show Dante’s disorientation. Whether the disorientation is spiritual, physical, moral or political; that is unclear at the start of the poem. The poem us written this way so reader can identify with Dante. It is also written in such a way that sometimes it is difficult to understand some parts, you sometimes have to read it backwards to get a better understanding.
The architectural and emotional literary synopsis of passage 15.1-30 suggests an insight to Dante Alighieri’s natural human characters pilgrimage and life journey through hell. At this moment Dante cannot see anything that resembles comfort or familiarity. The architecture of this circle thus far includes, “protecting banks”, “stoney boarders”, “bulwalk”, and “dikes” protecting it from flooding waters. This circle’s punishment for homosexuals is to walk with madness in the soil and fire raining on their skin. The architecture of the surrounding walls are not built to keep the living out, but to the “repel the sea”. The purpose of surrounding walls are to prevent fresh water from washing these people who walk through fire clean. Dante uses a simile to compare the flock of souls eyes to, “knitted brows like a old tailor’s needle’s eyes”. This gives a deeper perception of warmth, realism, and humanization of these sinner’s emotions and intentions. Dante finds his teacher, Bunetto Latini, running in hell, which he unconditionally honors and loves. This scene in essence illuminates how Dante finds the most sincere and familiar person he knows, in the utter most bowels of hell. Dante’s exchange with his former teacher is the most natural and bravest he has had in the novel. A
Inferno, written by Dante Alighieri illustrates the idea of justice through the belief that with each action arise a consequence. What you sin above ground, you deal with under. Through this he gives examples of the sins done and the punishment that is inflicted from doing such thing as a disgrace to God. All through Dantes imagination and his views as to how it should be done, there is a punishment for each area of sin committed which is why a person who bribes will be in the further in the level of hell, as compared to someone who has killed an innocent.
Life is full of difficulty. No one can see what will happen tomorrow. When you're life become successful, other people are envy and they're trying to drag you down ,especially those person have the highest position in politics or the other person who are rich. Like what happen to Edmond Dantes. Most of the time, the person have the power in politics or the one who have the ability to control other, they are the one who is abusive.
Journeys can be taken many ways. Some people take the path less traveled and some people take the easy way out. Dante happens to be on journey that is less traveled, by exploring the depths of Hell in the Inferno. The epic poem’s story is about self-realization and transformation. It sees Dante over coming many things to realize he is a completely different person from the start of the Inferno journey. Dante sees many things that help him gain courage in order to prove to himself and the reader that accepting change and gaining courage can help one to grow as a person and realize their full potential. After seeing people going through certain punishment Dante realizes that he must not seek pity on himself and others in order to fully realize his true potential.
‘Inferno’ was a book wrote by Dante the poet, he described the experience of Dante the Pilgrim who visited the hell and saw how sinners was punished horribly followed by God’s will with his own eye. God’s intention of building such a hell seemed obvious to us, it’s a place to punish the ones who failed to listen to the instructions of God and live fairly. I shared different idea. In my opinion, Hell was built based on God’s love in Dante’s ‘Inferno’. The idea of Hell was built based on God’s love first appeared on the description of Gates of Hell, where existed a inscription concluding following sentences: ‘JUSTICE MOVED MY MAKER ON HIGN.
In Dante’s Inferno, Dante is taken on a journey through hell. On this journey, Dane sees the many different forms of sins, and each with its own unique contrapasso, or counter-suffering. Each of these punishments reflects the sin of a person, usually offering some ironic way of suffering as a sort of revenge for breaking God’s law. As Dante wrote this work and developed the contrapassos, he allows himself to play God, deciding who is in hell and why they are there. He uses this opportunity to strike at his foes, placing them in the bowels of hell, saying that they have nothing to look forward to but the agony of suffering and the separation from God.
Religious people always fear that they will not make it to Heaven or the place their God resides. The bible and other religious text give advice on how to avoid the pain of Hell. Dante Alighieri, a famous Italian poet, wrote about the physical description of Hell and the punishments each sinner would receive for their sins. Although The Divine Comedy chronicles Dante's journey from the depths of Hell to the glory of Heaven it contains a deeper meaning. Dante reveals the true meaning of the Inferno through his leading motif, his interactions between the sinners, and the intertwining of other literary works into the Inferno.
