When the term “isolation” is used, most people think of it as an action performed in solitude. It brings to mind an empty space in which one person resides, far from all others. However, isolation does not always occur in a singular sense. In “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe, isolation is used by a large population as a means of safety. In “The Thing Around Your Neck” by Chimananda Ngozi Adichie, isolation occurs among crowds of people and even in the company of someone close to one’s heart. Edgar Allan Poe is an extremely beloved author, constantly put on a pedestal as a dark, brooding, tragic writer. His name is practically synonymous with macabre at this point. But what led to this reputation? Many people read his more disturbing works and conclude he has had a horrible, painful life but was his life really as tragic as it has been perceived to be? Yes, he dealt with deaths in his family, mediocre parenting, and substance abuse (alcohol and opium) but that was not something that was particularly outlandish. People read his stories like “The Masque of the Red Death” and “The Tell-Tale Heart” and automatically classify Poe as a horror writer and cannot look past that. They are completely oblivious to how complex and multi-faceted

In The Masque of the Red Death, Poe shows the signs of the inevitability of death and the measures one will go to avoid it. It is human nature for Prince Prospero to want to protect himself from the red death. He also shows his need for control when he locks the tower. It represented him locking the disease (death) out but also preventing anyone to leave, therefore he was delaying the inevitability of death, hoping for one last ounce of control. In A Rose for Emily, Emily and her father both saw themselves as superiors. As did Prince Prospero when he only let in his rich, and powerful friends in his tower. Both of the characters focused of seclusion, whether it be voluntary or not they all considered themselves higher up. Prospero thought

He lived in the era of westward expansion, slavery laws beginning to become an issue, and most influential to Poe, Tuberculosis was a major issue. There was not yet a cure for people with TB, in fact, there wouldn’t be a known cure for another 100 years after his life. He lost many people during his life, his father left before Poe was 3 years old, his mother died from TB when Edgar was three. He was forced into a foster home, but stories tell that his foster father did not like him so he struggled to find the support he needed both as a child and as a broke college student. A story also written by Poe is “The Masque of the Red Death”. This story starts of by describing the sickness “the red death” which kills many people in a fictional country hastily. Many residents are distraught and scared of this sickness, other than the prince Prospero who does not seem to focus on this issue. Although Poe did not describe the exact symptoms of the sickness, I believe that he has portrayed tuberculosis as the red death, which would make sense as it is the illness that killed Poe’s loved ones quickly. Poe’s mother, wife and many more relatives suffered from this disease, but still just like prince Prospero he tried to ignore the significance of this illness. Moreover, I suppose that Prospero is Poe but when he was adopted
The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe inspired my creative project because I am a visual learner and I found quite a bit of interest in this specific writing. The way this story caught my attention was the dark the dark tone that Poe had used, which is different than the other works that I have read thus far. In the short story there is a plague and kills many in this kingdom and because of this Prince Prospero had locked him and a couple of others in his kingdom to hide from the Red Death. He then throws a party since they “safe” from the plague and that is when the Red Death appears at his party.
