Edgar Allen Poe is a recognized American writer of short stories, poems, and a few books. He lived in the era of westward expansion, slavery laws beginning to become an issue, and most influential to Poe, Tuberculosis was a major issue. There was not yet a cure for people with TB, in fact, there wouldn’t be a known cure for another 100 years after his life. He lost many people during his life, his father left before Poe was 3 years old, his mother died from TB when Edgar was three. He was forced into a foster home, but stories tell that his foster father did not like him so he struggled to find the support he needed both as a child and as a broke college student. He married, although many myths state that Poe was a drunkard and incapable …show more content…
Irony is another literary element that illustrates Poe’s macabre writing style. One example of ironic foreshadowing is present when Montresor, the narrator of “Cask of Amontillado”, states his family motto,“Nobody attacks me without punishment” (237). The reader learns that he feels another character, Fortunato, has immensely insulted him. While the men were on their way down to the cellar Fortunato is coughing and declares his cough would not kill him. Montresor replies “True - True” as if he knows what would kill Fortunato. These particular lines outline that Montresor may be doing something suspicious if he is leading Fortunato far away from everyone down to where no one would find them. And in the end, Fortunato died out of his greed to taste the Amontillado, as Montresor has planned. Another example of irony is present when Poe writes, “The Masque of the Red Death,” specifically, “precautions the courtiers might bid defiance to contagion.” (1) Similarly, these characters wanted to have it all, and it ultimately leads to their death. In this story, they were dancing with death, and in Poe’s stories, death always wins. An additional similarity between the short stories “The Masque of the Red Death” and “Cask of Amontillado,” is the characters’ names are modeled after good traits lack that trait by dying in the end; this happens to both Fortunato and Prince Prospero.
The short story of "The Cask Of Amontillado" by Edgar Allen Poe is a riveting story of betrayal and death. Within the story Poe focuses on the protagonist, Montresor, who has a great disdain for a man named Fortunat. Although we don't know why Montresor hates Fortunato, we know that Montresor wants revenge, and thus conspires a plan to murder Fortunato. In contrast to the audience, Fortunato is unaware of his impending doom, which is a beautiful display of dramatic irony. Within "The Cask Of Amontillado", Poe uses irony, word choice, setting and various other literary devices to set the mood of the story.
In “The Cask of Amontillado” Edgar Allan Poe tells a story of a man named Fortunato, a professional wine taster, who has foolishly brought death upon himself. Fortunato has managed to anger a man with the name Montresor who has hatched a plan of revenge during a great carnival. To help the reader fully understand Poe uses three different kinds of irony verbal, dramatic, and situational. The verbal being their conversation, the dramatical, when he jokes about his health, and the situational when he is dressed as a jester.
Edgar Allan Poe, born in 1809, is a critic, mystery and short story writer, but most importantly a poet. Edgar’s troubled life greatly influenced his works. As a young boy, Edgar loved to compose poems for his loved ones. But as he grew older, Edgar started to experience pains and tragedies in life, causing him to abuse on opium and alcohol. These were scenes behind the years of Edgar’s dark writings.
Poe lost his loved ones which made him very depressed. Poe lost his mother when he was very young and his father left him when he was 1 year old. His mother died from the horrible disease tuberculosis. Poe then got a new home with the Allen family a caring family sometimes. Poe’s step mother loved him, but his father did not like him so much as he was very mean to Edgar. Poe’s stepmother sadly died just like his biological mother. Edgar Poe finally moved in with family, his cousin Virginia and aunt to be precise. He fell in love with Virginia and married her he loved her so much, but the time he had her wasn't enough. Virginia died of the same exact
In “The Cask of Amontillado” Edgar Allan Poe uses symbolic irony and foreshadowing to tell the theme of a man who seeks revenge and vengeance to help provide the authority of his family and their motto. Poe showcases a clear use of symbolic irony within his short story on top of small hints of foreshadowing. In “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, Montresor is out seeking revenge against Fortunato in order to preserve his family motto. Poe starts off the short story bit irony by In Poe’s short story one might believe that Montresor is a villain with an evil plan to kill a friend, but Montresor is just looking for revenge against Fortunato. There is never a clear understanding why Montresor believes Fortunato deserves the action
Also, Fortunato of “The Cask of Amontillado was a wealthy aristocrat, who indulged excessively in alcohol, was murdered by Montresor, because of insults. This confirmed Poe’s dislike of both aristocracy and anyone, who overindulged and highlighted another likeness between the two stories. Regardless of the shared minor themes, the major themes of the stories are different. In “The Cask of Amontillado” narrating how Montresor took his revenge on Fortunato, therefore being primarily a tale of revenge, whereas, the horrific end of Prince Prospero and his house guest who sought a safe place of protection in his palace indicated the main idea of “The Masque of the Red Death” to be death and how no one could have escaped it and how it came unexpectedly, “like a thief in the night” (Poe 323).
In the short story,”A Cask of Amontillado”, Poe uses the literary device, irony to reiterate the idea that hateful or angry feelings can lead to deception. In the story, Montresor (the narrator) is seeking revenge on his work partner (and apparent friend), Fortunato. According to Montresor, Fortunato hurt and insulted him. While at a party the night that Montresor plans to kill Fortunato, he speaks about how “I was so pleased to see him that I thought I should never have done wringing his hand” (Poe 6). This is an example of dramatic irony, as the readers know that Montresor is in fact pleased to see him, but for the reason being that he wants to kill him. Fortunato is oblivious to the fact that Montresor has anything going against him, which supports the idea that deception can be induced by another’s hatred. Later that night at the same party, the two characters are in the catacombs toasting with glasses of wine. Montresor shares that he is drinking to “(Fortunato’s) long life” (Poe, 7). This is an example of verbal irony. Fortunato believes that they are simply toasting to their long lives and the dead that surround them. Montresor not only says his proposed toast in what seems like a sarcastic tone, but he also means the exact opposite of what he is saying. Montresor is actually toasting to the fact that he gets to kill Fortunato later that evening. Because of Montresor's sickly-sweet attitude and the author’s clever use of irony, Fortunato is unaware that he is being
Verbal irony is used throughout the short story to show how pride lead to Fortunato’s death. For example, ‘“My dear Fortunato you are luckily met”’(Poe 374). In the beginning when Montresor and Fortunato met at the carnival,it could be called parasitism because Montresor benefits from the death of Fortunato in the end,it was Fortunato who was harmed in the process. Fortunato’s encounter with Montresor was unlucky therefore, showing irony in not only his murder but also in the relation his name has with the meaning of the word fortunate.Verbal irony is also showed before you read the short story, in the title The Cask of Amontillado. An Amontillado is a rare wine that Montresor used to entice Fortunato, knowing that he would not give up the opportunity to taste it. Fortunato’s pride and curiosity resulted in him being buried alive. The cask is where Fortunato's body is buried and the word cask could mean similar to the word ‘casket’.Poe broadened his use of literary techniques and used metaphors to convey the events that occurred between Montresor and Fortunato.
In the “The Cask of Amontillado” Poe presents verbal irony to the reader in order to excite and create suspense for the reader as to what fate will bring
