After releasing his second book, Burmese Days, his first novel, he married Eileen O’Shaughnessy and joined the fight against General Francisco Franco in the Spanish Civil war (Georgeorwell.org). During his service, he was shot in the neck, and found it extremely hard to speak. Over the years the writer became very sick. Even during this difficult time, he was still faced with more agony. His wife passed away in 1945, leaving him alone. During this time, he published the first of his two most famous books: Animal Farm. This novel was purely anti-Soviet, and fictionalized Stalin and Trotsky as two pigs on a farm. His second and final book was 1984, which he published in 1949. One of his former professors at Eton, Adieus Huxley, stated in a letter to Orwell “Agreeing with all that the critics have written of it, I need not tell you, yet once more, how fine and how profoundly important the book is.” (Huxley) The two books were great successes, but Orwell had little time left to celebrate. He died a year after the release of 1984, on January 21, 1950. (Britannica.com)
Theme
An important theme in the book 1984, written by George Orwell, is power. In fact, most of the story is about seizing or gaining power. The government and Big Brother both want absolute power over everything. This includes people’s words, their actions, even their thoughts. Also, during the story, a war over power is currently going on. Three

The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Fitzgerald and Passing by Nella Larsen are two significant historical novels that highlight the problems of the nineteen-twenties. These two stories, written within a decade, contrast each other deeply as The Great Gatsby investigates the deep socio-economic tensions of the early twentieth century whereas Passing investigates the deep racial tensions throughout the beginning of the twentieth century. An aspect intrinsic to both books is how these tensions relate to and hinder the American Dream, the idea that every American has an equal opportunity to achieve success through hard work and determination. Both novels present characters that

George Orwell once said, “Happiness can only exist in acceptance,” and this overall idea of acceptance would become a reoccurring theme in his literary work 1984. In 1984, Winston Smith, the protagonist, would team up with Julia, a fellow nonconformist, to fight the Party, and more specifically, Big Brother, all taking place in the continent of Oceania. Overall, the main concept of 1984 is the Party’s need to control every aspect of life, completed through the use of constant surveillance, fear, language and more specifically through the use of these techniques, controlling their thoughts, essentially, Oceania is an environment where, “No one is free, even the birds are chained to the sky.” Moreover, Winston Smith and Julia see through the Party’s techniques, and risk their lives to join the Brotherhood, an underground group fabled to work against the Party, and Big Brother. However, Julia and Winston soon find out that the Brotherhood was only a trap used by inner-party member to seek out rebels. In the end, Julia and Winston are tortured to the point where they no longer believe what they did before, and are sent back into society to live out their lives as everyone else, where, “War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery” and, “Ignorance is Strength.” Furthermore, in 1984, false information, fear, language, and constant surveillance, are all techniques the Party uses to take absolute control over the citizens of Oceania.

There are an innumerable number of examples that indicate the setting of the story is in England of 1843. Also, Saint Paul’s Churchyard is mentioned in reference to Hamlet’s father, which is located in England. Finally, Scrooge questions two poor men by asking if “The Treadmill and the Poor Law is in full vigor”. These were laws that were enacted in England and resulted in the incarceration of people unable to pay their bills.
