I always see my little brother and sister on their phone. It can be any time of the day or late at night when I come home at 12. I go into their room and see them wide awake knowing they have school at six o’ clock in the morning. They are part of the generation called iGens, and being on their cell phones is affecting the way they sleep. It is also affecting their activity level, which may cause health problems in the future. I did not receive a cell phone until ninth grade; my siblings are in fifth and sixth grade and have iPhones. My siblings and I are from two different generations. Twenge has a reliable analysis on how smartphones are affecting the generation she calls “iGens.” Twenge is very persuasive; because she is highly credible of the research she has formed.
In “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation” published by The Atlantic, professor of psychology, Jean M. Twenge, states that the generation called iGens is drastically different than any other generation for the rise of depression and sleep deprivation, which all links up to their use of smartphones. In the beginning Twenge made a phone call to a girl in Texas, asking what her favorite things to do were for iGens research. The thirteen-year-old girl stated that she spends most of her time chatting with her friends or on social media. Twenge has been researching generation differences for twenty-five years.
