In his article “In the Basement of the Ivory Tower,” Professor X explains how our society pressures people to take college courses for which they are not equipped. As both a community college and private college adjunct English teacher, Professor X explains the goal of his courses is for the student to complete research, form opinions, put together facts, then write their papers. He provides examples where people must take a certain amount of college level classes to advance in their occupation or to even apply for a job. He says, “There is a sense that the American workforce needs to be more professional at every level” (X). Even though he shares the opinion that college should be an option if a person wants it, not everyone is capable of taking on college level courses. Therefore many students fail his courses. There are parts of the article where Professor X seems to enjoy teaching. "I love trying to convey to a class my passion for literature, or the immense satisfaction a writer can feel when he or she nails a point,” (X) he says. So for a portion of the semester, he enjoys teaching. Only when the students have to write papers, and the failing grades begin, does he make a downward turn to negativity and despair. Reading through the article, Professor X appears that he has been teaching for quite some time. Writing is a talent that develops over time and requires hard work and effort.
