Thesis: Faith requires trust. I will be discussing the two different views of faith from the writings of John and Paul. These two understandings of faith show two different sides of becoming a true believer of God and his works. The illustration I chose to use to get a better understanding of faith in John’s view is from chapter 3. I chose this illustration because I thought it illustrated his views the best on forming faith in God. The illustration I chose for Paul was the letter he wrote to the Galatians. I believe this shows his views and understandings of faith very well compared to other letters he wrote. The illustration that I am going to use for John’s understanding of faith is from verses 3:1-3:36. From these verses I will …show more content…
If people believed and had faith before Jesus had to prove to them that he was the anointed one, they were not condemned. Those who did not believe from the beginning would be condemned because they have not and will not “believe in God’s only son”. John is also mentioning through this statement that those who have seen and believed have faith now, but because they did not believe initially they will still be condemned. Those that are condemned are unable to seek God’s help, and will not be allowed eternal life. The last example from John that I will use to explain his understanding of faith is “Those who entrust themselves to the son have unending life, but those who refuse the son will not see life; no, they remain the object of God’s wrath” (Miller). This example is similar to the last example I took from John, but I believe this example goes into a little more depth on what John really believes faith means. I believe John is using this statement to represent that those who “entrust” and follow the word of the lord, and have faith in God will be given the gift of enteral life with God. From this example trust is a big part of the forming of faith, without trust no faith is able to be formed. From these three examples from verses 3:1-3:36 I believe that John’s overall understanding of faith is that people must see something to believe it, but those who have true faith in God without needing to see miracles of Jesus will live an eternal life.
Many people would agree that without faith, the world would be in chaos. The book Christian Foundation by Kathleen Fischer and Thomas Hart gives an interpretation on faith in our time. Many people would question the definition of faith. Faith is a gift, which is given by God to have trust in him and belief in him. This book is a great entry in anyone's life that has speculation on his or her own faith. The book has many ways into understanding ones own religion. It discusses the Bible, Jesus, Church, God's existence and Images of God. All of these chapters helped me get a better interpretation of what my religion entailed.
We’ve all been there before, searching for something to watch on TV, 500 channels and nothing catches our attention until we hear the yelling of the televangelist, “YOU JUST GOTTA HAVE FAITH! QUIT TRYING TO UNDERSTAND IT ALL! LET GO AND LET GOD!” For some that may be the solution they are searching for. They might be frustrated or let down by their own efforts of understanding. But does faith begin with “letting go (of reason and understanding) and letting God (reveal Himself to us)”? Is there any compatibility between exercising Christian faith and exercising reason? Does reason have a role or should it have a role in the Christian’s acts of faith? This has been a topic of discussion throughout history by many great thinkers. I am going to attempt to show that reason has an active role in exercising the Christian faith; at least attempt to show that reason and faith aren’t mutually exclusive. I will briefly discuss (1) different views of the philosophical divide taken by philosophizers over the ages (2) and biblical evidence of the use of reason (3) definition of biblical faith.
Throughout the Gospel of John the term “belief” is used in multiple ways for different reasons. Belief is employed as a means to give the reader motivation to believe in Jesus and God which will bring them to eternal glory and happiness. This belief can be rewarded with eternal life, as well as a personal connection to Jesus Christ. God can also be seen and believed in if one only believes in Jesus and allows for a wholesome connection to the Father and Son. In addition to beginning to understand the use of “belief” in the Gospel of John, one must correctly infer from his words and deduce their meaning.
This book puts both of that into a mixture of questions around faith and Christianity, yet at the same time, providing a number of explanations and reasons why those questions are so important in the context of faith. There are a number of interviews conducted in
Philosophical theologian Paul Tillich’s view of faith is intriguing and full of depth. Tillich professed, “Faith to be a state of being ultimately concerned.” (Morrison, 2011). In life, people are concerned about several things that are above our personal existence and every living being has concerns about something. For example, we, as people live our lives daily concerned about our basic needs, i.e. food, shelter, and clothing. Furthermore, Tillich acknowledged there are some concerns “which are spiritual in nature, such as cognitive, aesthetic, moral, and political that can have an elevated level of ultimacy.” (Smith, 2003, p. 1). Although these concerns are of great importance, Tillich’s idea of ultimate concern supersedes all other concerns, as it is our greatest and tends to take on a religious nature.
Faith is a gift from God. Faith means I won’t go to hell when I die. We were God’s perfect creation. Being the loving God he is he gave us free will. We abused that free will and fell into sin. God loved us so much he sent his own son Jesus (who is also God) down to earth, Jesus was willingly tortured and slaughtered by the people he came to save, dragged the sins of the world into the pits of hell and rose again so that everyone can go to heaven and be God’s children if they have faith. Jesus didn’t stop there. He stayed and taught people for 40 days, promised that the the Holy Spirit (who is also God) would come and then ascended into heaven. 10 days later the Holy Spirit came on Pentecost.
The concept of faith is one that most people are aware of, though they may not be able to define it. The definition of faith is to have a complete trust in something or someone. In most people’s cases, the something or someone is God. To have faith, you must first hear about the thing that you want to have faith in. The thing can’t be seen; otherwise, you just believe without faith. Then you must trust that the thing exists and that what is said about it is true. Faith is a concept that has been around since the creation of the world before the world fell into sin. Adam had faith in God, and God gave him authority over Earth. He later gives up this authority to Satan. Faith is an attribute that everyone needs to have and is one of the most important concepts that a person can know. Faith involves trusting an individual or thing so much that you would blinding walk according to their will. Faith can be compared to trust falling. One person keeps their back to the other while falling backward into the other’s arms. It takes not only trust in the other person, but faith
Throughout this book you will be connected scripturally and through testimonials in these areas. You will begin to see how Faith is utilized in the lives of many searching for an answer or even the truth. Faith is an instinct of the human soul, a subject of consciousness and personality, a means to an end of all trials and tribulations in a persons’ life. We use coping mechanisms to get through obstacles in our lives. The people of the Book did often the same thing. Their coping mechanism to get through those trials and tribulations was to believe, to display Faith in The Most High. The people of the Most High must utilize their given power and authority to access all the promises and blessings that Yahweh has freely given to them to access. We must use this as a coping mechanism to endure to the
Jesus was amazed not at the Faith of those he taught in his home town, but of their complete unbelief. They did not trust in him, believe in him, or even made a BIG DEAL of him. Faith is essential to living a Christian life. The Bible says, that “the just shall live by faith.”
Therefore, Just accepting Christ as your savior is not enough for John. John believed that a heartful, trusting, relationship could and should exist between man and Christ.. So when John speaks of 'belief', he is referring to a wholehearted dependence upon the righteous of God. Trust and commitment are foremost to an understanding of eternal life in the name of Christ.
Pope John Paul II once said, “Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth – in a word, to know himself – so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves.” (Fallible Blogma) Based on this significant and powerful quote, one can infer that faith and reason are directly associated and related. It can also be implied that the combination of faith and reason allows one to seek information and knowledge about truth and God; based on various class discussions and past academic teachings, it is understood that both faith and reason are the instruments that diverse parties
Chapter 2 discusses faith as visualization of, and belief in attainment of desire. It goes on to discuss faith as another word for "Absolute Confidence." When a person has faith in his beliefs then one can say that half of the battle to acquire success is won. Therefore, when faith is combined with the vibration of thought then the subconscious mind picks up the vibration, translates it into spiritual equivalent, and transmits it to infinite intelligence. Knowing how to develop faith is a method by which it does not already exist is very difficult to describe. Faith is a state of mind, which may be developed at, will after the thirteen principles, which can be mastered in this book.
What is faith? Faith is something different to everyone. If you asked a hundred different people, it is possible that you would get many diverse answers. Religious faith and non-religious faith are two very distinct terms. Faith holds an extremely complex meaning when discussing it in the context of religion. Faith is a belief. That holds true to every religious and non-religious person. Every faith involves a decision. It is not about what we claim to believe, but what we actually do believe, that is true faith. Throughout this paper, I am going to discuss Christian faith, how it pertains to daily life and Christianity as a whole. I also intend to delve into George W. Forell's discussion of Christian faith and analyze and
To define faith, it means to have complete trust or confidence in someone or something. Abraham’s faithfulness to the task God had assigned to him was shown through him being willing to sacrifice his son, Isaac. In Genesis 22 God tested Abraham and he said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” Abraham woke up early “saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac.” It was on the third day that Abraham was to take the life of Isaac. When he was getting ready to do as the Lord had asked, God spoke and said not to lay a finger on the boy. From this we learn that God was only testing Abraham to see if he really had faith, Abraham passed. Also, his faith was tested by Abraham being required to leave his family behind in order to follow God’s plan. Therefore, we
Faith is the spiritual force that brings the spiritual into the physical, the unseen into the seen. So the Most High gives faith as the substance to the spiritual in the physical world. We can only begin to comprehend the invisible things of the spiritual realm by observing the visible things of the physical realm this is mentioned in Romans 1:19-20.
