Death Be Not Proud by John Gunther tells the story of Johnny Gunther, a young man who died on June 30, 1947. He was only seventeen years old at the time of his death. His father, a distinguished journalist and the author of this book, wrote down Johnny's struggle to help others learn more about the devastating effects of a brain tumor.

Death Be Not Proud by John Gunther was an astounding book. Granted, it was a bit depressing, but it was a great book because I could relate so closely to the author. The trial of a loved one going through cancer is something I can relate to. Fortunately, my story turns out a little bit better than Johnny’s did.

When Nathan was growing up he had one brother named Enoch and his parents were Richard and Elizabeth Hale. He went to a school called Yale University for his education. He aced in literature and debate and graduated in at the age of 18. His family were Puritans. His parents sent him off to a religious school with his brother Enoch. He became a school teacher.

John had attended two different schools at first he was attending Milton Boarding School for boys then later attended Timothy's Hall-Sporadically. John has always been described as a handsome man. Many people who knew him had figured it would be only natural for John to follow his dad's footsteps into the acting business. At the age of 17 he had made his acting debut in Baltimore he was in a production of Shakespeare's Richard lll. He had done such an outstanding job that he was invited to tour all over the country with a company known as "Shakespearean". John was obviously going in the right direction and was going to become such a successful actor.

John T. Nichols was born in Berkley, California, and was raised by his great grandfather, Anatole Le Braz, who was also a writer from Brittany in Norther France. His mother passed away at the age of two. John Nichols moved around a lot, but learned different cultures from Miami, Florida, Vermont, Connecticut, Virginia; New York, where he attended Hamilton College, his father divorced several times.
There were many situations that affected Helmuth and the plot of the story. When Helmuth sees the Nazi beat up Herr Seligmann, he witnesses how brutal the Nazi’s can be towards the innocent. Next, Hitler starts making laws to “protect” Germany from traitors which is starting to make Helmuth angry which will end up leading him to making pamphlets. Another situation that leads Helmuth to start making leaflets is his encountering with Brother Worbs when he returns from Neuengamme. There are some small incidents, but the all add to Helmuth’s anger and hatred towards Hitler.
Life before he started to write was life with God. He went to Boston Latin School and Harvard. After he finished undergraduate in Harvard, he went to Harvard School of Divinity. He became a pastor later in the Unitarian Church in Boston. He was influenced by his surroundings when he was young because he was born in a strict puritan family. His father was a pastor and his ancestors were, too.
