Lucy Grealy talks about her fourteen year old self, and how working at the stable of Diamond D and conducting pony parties has created an uncomfortable environment for her. She explains that she has gone through chemo therapy and half of her jaw is missing, giving her an unusual, but a distinctive look. She states that as her hair grew longer, she would use it to her advantage to hide her face, like a curtain. She knew people would stare, and that meant everything to her. Validation meant a lot, she depended on it. Especially during the times when pony parties are hosted, children would forget about the ponies and instantly have their attention on her. Grealy then states that she actually enjoyed her time with the horses however, because she felt that they were better at understand her as a person. …show more content…
As she interacted with other children, paranoia had grew, as she thought that any type of comment amount them is aimed towards her and the way she looked. Of course some of it was true, as some of the the children did stare and laughed. She later blames it on the lack of money that her family had. It was the root of all the unhappiness that surrounds her. It didn’t help that she was diagnosed with cancer, an expensive illness, which of course Grealy saw the bills and causing her parents to fight. She blamed it on herself. She was envious of rich and healthy children, she was hurt by their parents that saw them as danger. She ends the story with her being photographed for examination, and how she would’ve have liked an alternative photo of her and a pony just like the other

An illustration of this is when Helen describes Myra as having a “rotten-sweetish smell as of bad fruit.” Also, when Helen asks what she will become when she is older, she looks very confused and says, “I will help my mother, and work in the shop.” Helen replies to this by saying that she will become an airplane hostess. While Helen’s family does not have less money than Myra’s, she seems to have some issues when she says she is the only student in the classroom who, “carried a lunch pail and ate peanut-butter sandwiches in the high, bare, mustard-colored cloakroom…” She feels she is in danger because it could be somethings that separates her from the better off and popular children in the class. With this considered, if either of them had families with money like a classmate named Gladys Healey, they would not have differences they could bond

The American journalist and politician Clare Boothe Luce spoke out to a group of journalists to make her statement on the press. The time Luce’s speech was presented, it was 1960; a much different time from how press runs today. Back in the sixties, press was presented in the form of newspapers or by word of mouth, whereas today press appears on a computer screen. In Luce’s speech she states, “It is- to use the big word- the pursuit of and the effort to state the truth.” (L.39). This statement concludes that the author views the whole point of the press to tell the truth. Whether the topic is on the food industry or on economics, press brings information to the people in an honest fashion. Back in this time Clare used many rhetorical

It was two days before Christmas, when Josephine opened the door to her 12 year old son’s room. Chay was the oldest of her four children, and the one she related to most. As Josephine sat down on the edge of the bed, Chay opened his eyes slowly. The dim light that seeped through the partially opened door revealed tears in his mother’s eyes.

In Lynn Coady’s essay, “Hockey Night in Port Hawkesbury,” her personal experience aligns with Campbell’s definition of a hero. First, Coady begins her spiritual journey at the status quo. During hockey games, she would often “sit at the... back of the living room with a selection of magazines on the table beside [her]” (Coady 333). At the dawn of her journey, Coady feels like an outsider: always on outside looking in, and never truly engaging with her small community. Second, Coady has a spiritual crisis and nearly quits her journey. She concluded that “someone like [her]...should never expect to have anything to do with such a vastly significant phenomenon” and isolates herself in literature "where nary a taint of hockey fever could be felt”
