Greed and or Jealousy can lead to bad actions, choices and results. It can happen to one person or multiple people no matter what age they are. This is shown in three stories, “Ponies” written by Kij Johnson, “All Summer in a Day” written by Ray Bradbury and in “Harrison Bergeron” written by Kurt Vonnegut. In “Ponies” there are a group of girls who invited one to a “cutting-out” party. Where a pony picks two of the three thing she has to be cut off for her and her owner to join the club. In “All Summer in a Day,” the girl, Margot knows about the sun while the rest of the kids do not know about the sun - or they do not remember it. Last, in “Harrison Bergeron,” the government forced people to be equal making them wear things they called “handicaps.” In all of these stories it shows how greed and or jealousy can lead to bad actions, choices and results. In “Ponies” the main girl in the story asked her pony what she wanted to be cut off so they could join the girls group. When her and her pony went to the …show more content…
In “Harrison Bergeron” it talked about how Harrison tried to take over the government, he took off his handicaps along with a ballerina who he claimed as his “queen” while he was the “king.” The ballerina and Harrison were shot because they were trying to make everyone different, trying to make a difference in the government and they were trying to make people follow them rather than the government. All of this shows how because of greed and jealousy, it often ended in bad actions, choices and results. Two stories ended in deaths and one story ended in guilt because of this. The authors showing through their stories how greed and jealousy can make everything crash and
The main conflict of the story is between Harrison Bergeron and the government. Harrison disagrees with the government’s way of controlling and handicapping society, especially since he has been given several handicaps. Harrison does not believe one should be limited, however, he is
This week, I’d like to talk about the new stories. Firstly, ‘the fox and grapes’ show us that a fox wanted to get some clusters of ripe black grapes. She resorted to all her tricks to get at them, but wearied herself in vain, for she could not reach them. At last she turned away and said: “The grapes are sour, and not ripe as I thought.” As we all know, not because the grapes are sour, but because the fox couldn’t eat. In the real life, there are many people like the fox’s selfish. For instance, if they can’t get what they want, they won’t let others get it. As far as I’m concerned, we can’t be too selfish, because tolerance and love is the foundation of building a harmonious society. We can’t destroy social harmony
Harrison is the perfect example of this kind of rebellion. Although he is only fourteen, “he is a genius and an athlete, is under-handicapped, and should be regarded as extremely dangerous” (141). Due to his abilities, he is in prison because he is a threat to society. Harrison is aware that a new society must emerge, and he breaks out of prison, removes his handicaps, and for just a moment, shows his individuality. In the government’s eyes, Harrison is a rebel, and rebels are people that have no place in society, and must die. Diana Moon Glampers, who is the Handicapper General and represents conformity, kills Harrison and his selected mate with whom he wanted to rule a more humane America. She then threatens everyone else with force in the television station with a shotgun by “aiming it at the musicians and told them they have ten seconds to get their handicaps back on” (143). Although Harrison’s actions take place, conformity and equality still rule. In an article in Contemporary American writers, it describes Harrison’s parents after the murder, “They resume their passive, acquiescent lives; having forgotten the entire scene almost as soon as they witnessed it” (2396). This dehumanization is the result of government oppression, as well as the physical punishment that awaits if anyone tries to be rebellious like Harrison Bergeron.
Harrison’s actions of can be described as heroic due to the fact that he attempted to revolutionize the society in a way that benefitted the population as a whole, not just himself. Many other people were angered and confused by the idea of handicaps, and by standing up to the government when all other people were afraid to do so, he acted in a selfless manner, a characteristic of a true hero. An example of another person doubting the intentions of the Handicap General can be seen at the beginning of the story, when George, Harrison’s father, realizes that it is unfair to place the hindrance of a handicap on a ballerina. On page 2, the text states, “George was toying with the vague notion that maybe dancers shouldn't be
On 1st April while Harrison Bergeron; the hero of the story was fourteen, government arrested him from his parents George and Hazel. They were not fully aware about the tragedy however. Hazel did not have enough information about the accident because of her average intelligence. In those years average intelligence was not enough to comprehend the accident. George was also not aware of the incident because he was required to wear a radio during the whole day. The government interrupted intelligent people like George, because one day George and Hazel were watching ballet on TV, when a ballerina interrupted the show, because she had important news o declare. She excitedly said, “Harrison escaped” and his photo was displayed on the screen. Then Harrison attacked the studio and said that “I am Emperor and everyone should obey to me”. After that he added that whoever will approach me first, she will be my Empress. One of the ballerinas accepted his request and agreed to be his partner as Empress. They danced and kissed each other, but at the same moment Handicapper General Diana Moon Glampers shoot both of them. The screen of the television started to get darker while Hazel was crying. Then George entered to the room and addressed to Hazel asking why she was crying. She told him that something bad happened on TV, but she did not remember the events. The reason was that her memory had been
intelligence. As well as the confusion George must be feeling when he thinks too highly.
Since Harrison was to smart he went to jail but then he escaped jail and took out his handicaps and entered a tv station near by and when he entered he made people take out there handicaps to feel how it is to be free but then he was shot to death. Harrison was to smart and athletic to be living with other people so was in jail were he was survilnenced with his every move but the he escaped and took out his handicaps. Harrison was in jail and the world he was in everyone had to be equal to each other and had handicaps that made everybody equal, Harrison escaped jail and took out his
To begin, the theme one's own selfishness can end up pushing away and hurting those close to them is shown through
Vonnegut's, short story, “Harrison Bergeron”, portrays Harrison as a considerate, ignored hero but also an outsider, standing up for the people’s and his rights. Vonnegut made it clear that Harrison’s appearance and beliefs are portrayed negatively to others, while the equipment used on him and others, but also the responses from him and to the handicap generals, ballerinas, and news reporters have made them get a wrong
Harrison Bergeron’s decisions throughout the story “Harrison Bergeron” end up not making an impact on the society that he had lived in before his death. After Harrison broke out of his jail cell, he proceeded to the studio where the ballet is held on television and shouts, “I am the Emperor! Everyone must do what I say at once!” (Vonnegut 5). His goal to take over the government, actually did not affect society other than striking fear into the people. Also, his hopes of gaining support from the society does not happen, mainly because everybody still has their handicaps on so they forget why he is even on the television after his escape. Also his actions are
Do you remember a time when you were mad at one of your family members or friends? Do you also remember when you did or say something that you did not mean to do? In the short story, “All summer in a Day,” and the piece of art titled “Lonely Little Duck” the theme “Mood/jealousy controls how you think and how you act,” is used. If you get mad at someone you should think before speak or act. When you are jealous of somebody you may say or do somethings you may not want to do.
In terms of the destructive power jealousy has, jealousy leads to the demise of Ralph’s peaceful semi-democratic group and the rise of Jack’s aggressive authoritarian state, and not to mention the fatalities brought on as a result. Though the example presented in this novel is quite extreme, it is an eye
The reason is the government treated them to be afraid of something new and different without knowing it. The way Harrison acted was new and he was different from everybody. Probably nobody knew Harrison was only a kid when he sent to jail and got torture. Further, at the end of the story Harrison claimed that he is emperor and everyone should obey him. He faced audience and told them who dare to be his empress and suddenly ballerina girl who was bindingly beautiful got up and joined him. Harrison knew he was going to die and the general will kill him. He knew that he only have one day to be live like he always wanted to. Everybody saw him as villain but except the ballerina girl saw him as a hero. I think ballerina made a connection with
These stories bring out that human nature is that people are selfish and act like animals.
Throughout history, many people struggle with greed. Greed is defined as a selfish desire for something. Throughout the story each character faces there own form of greed, whether they know it or not each action impacts each other and leads to the death of the mother’s son. In the short story “The Rocking-Horse Winner”, the author D.H lawrence uses a rocking horse, wealth, and lack of family intimacy to illustrate to the reader the disastrous problems with greed.
