Phantasmagoria`s “Wickedest Tale of All” is a stage performance which consists of different stage play like; “The Conqueror Worm” pt 1-5, “The Churel,” “The Churel Dance/Solo” and “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edger Allan Poe. I think the “Churel” was most the longest among the few that were performed. “The Churel” is about when a pregnant woman dies during the Hindu Festival of Lights which they also call Diwali and they believed that the pregnant woman will turn into Churel and can come back to hunt either their family or young men by sucking their blood or eating their flesh.
In this play “The Churel” performed by the Phantasmagoria`s was a beautiful pregnant woman who had three brothers that were uncontended and jealousy of her no matter how pleasing she was to her brothers. They were not satisfied because they were full of hate and jealousy that lead them to kill her before her husband could come back during the Hindu Festival. Her body was cremated instead of burying her upside down to prevent her from becoming Churel. Because they failed to bury her upside down and perform some rituals to prevent her from becoming churel, she came back as churel to hunt and killed his brothers one after the other and when the husband rushed to her, she also killed the husband, not because she didn`t love the husband but because of what she has to turn into, bloodsucker.
Some of the aesthetic choice I found in the performance was the costume or dress. I think the dress they wore
The costumes were also quite beautiful and wonderfully tailored to each character. The many different
Triumphant reward in spite of unjust punishment is a universal sentiment that transcends languages and cultures. There are thousands of folktales and fairy tales that are firmly rooted in individual cultures, yet the tale of Cinderella has been told through many centuries and throughout the far corners of the world. With thousands of versions of this classic tale in print worldwide, the tale is believed to have originated with the story of Rhodopis, a Greek slave girl who is married to an Egyptian King. The story of Rhodopis, which means rosy-cheeks, dates back to 7 BC and is attributed to a Greek geographer named Strabo. The Chinese variation of this fairy tale is named Yeh-hsien. The Chinese version is traceable to the year 860 and appears in Miscellaneous Morsels from Youyang by Duan Chengshi. Yeh-hsien is a young girl, motherless and in the control of her stepmother, who befriends a treasured fish. The jealous step-mother kills the fish, but it’s bones provide Yeh-hsien with magical powers, eventually enabling Yeh-hsien to escape the control of her step-mother for a royal life. The Story of the Black Cow which is found within the pages of Folk Tales from the Himalayas by John Murray, published in 1906, the child who is mistreated by a stepmother is a male and the role of savior is portrayed by a snake, with a cow serving as the moral of the story, faithfulness. These two versions of Cinderella carry many common threads that are
The women’s clothes were really colorful such as yellow, blue, and green. The men wore the cloth that the basement color was white. I’m not sure how we can call men’s cloth but it was like the cloth that is the movie of “Coco.” The dancing was really graceful and beautiful.
This piece was more upbeat and busy. The storyline took place during the 1960s. There were more dancers that were showcased. The costumes that were worn were a good representation of the time frame.
From an audience’s perspective, a performer and their costume merge into one entity (Wilson, 2011). The costume that was the biggest eyesore was Froggy’s military attire. As everything in the show has a rural, old fashioned theme, he brought something totally different to the picture: camouflage fatigues. The costume that I was most impressed by, though, was Ellard’s. His outfit was a physical representation of what people thought of him. He had disheveled hair, dirty overalls half undone, and a messy shirt underneath. Ellard was perceived by those around him as mentally challenged, and his costume conveyed that through his lack of awareness towards his
As the performance goes on, the costume design represents where our characters are at in their timeline. While, in the first act, the characters are dressed in stereotypical post-apocalyptic attire, it does vary in from what we are presented in the last two acts. Around the campfire, the characters are dressed in
When I say wide variety of dancers I also mean dance types because there were tap dances, upbeat hawaiian dances, upbeat dances, hip hop dances, and many more. My favorite dances were the upbeat dances because it made the audience get hyped up and excited for the festival/concert even more than they were before. I personally believe that every single costume that the performers had worn fit their dances really well. For example, the song “Better When I’m Dancing” was performed by three girls who wore hawaiian style clothing, and it totally fit the music’s beats, lyrics, and personality
Panorama was performed by 35 women all wearing red skirts and matching tops. I believe that Graham chose these costumes because dresses are very feminine and many of her pieces have dresses as costumes. I also
In this story from Iran, two sisters are treated by opposite extremes by their mother. Adji Khanom is tall and thin with large lips and considered unattractive, her young sister Mahrokh is fair and petite and known as a beauty. Since childhood, Abji was hit and humiliated in front of strangers by their mother, for the shame of being born an ugly duckling, undermining herself esteem. Her parents once arranged a marriage to the carpenters apprentice Kalb Hosayn, but he did not want to marry her. Convinced that her reward will be in the next life, she devotes her life to prayer. When Mahrokh is to be married, Abji does all she can to slander her, even saying she is two months pregnant. Her jealous reaches its zenith on Mahrokh and Abbas wedding
Like all good fairy tales, Guillermo Del Toro 's Pan 's Labyrinth is just one big allegory disguising the horror of the real world with the fantasy of another. A look into the iconic images, fairytales, and tropes used throughout the film reveal a larger discussion about life, legacy, and lessons. Del Toro uses the guises of fairy-tails not to amuse or scare children, but to talk about some of the fears and struggles of adults.
One character in the movie, who’s costume design was really in tone with her storyline was Baby. The art direction, costume designer Hilary Rosenfeld took with her wardrobe was beautiful and really followed her through her journey to womanhood in the movie. “At the start of the movie, Baby is seen wearing frumpy or loose clothes that really hide
The costumes for the actors were well put together for the timing of the story. The timing was about the actor portraying about a young girl being in high school and in this scene, the costumes were in the year 1983. The actor also wore a beautiful wedding dress with lace trimming and shoes to match. The bouquet of flowers added color and shine that brought out the dress and shoes. Make up was not used,
Clothing is a major factor when it comes to the person themself, its how they can express themselves or show off. Dresses were fashionable at the least, people were judged on their social status and uniform. So in that case people had to dress to impress. “Dressed up in white Flannels”, or “She wore her evening-dress, all her dresses, like sports clothes”, or “Their dresses were rippling and fluttering as if they had just been blown…”. Everyone had different outtakes on style and their own personal style, both would differ on the event
The costumes were probably the best part of the whole performance. For an organization that does not always receive much funding,
The costume that the dancers were wearing seemed very interesting. The costumes looked very comfortable on the dancers.
