Sinek Video For me, the video of Simon Sinek speaking on developing trust and fulfillment hit very close to home, as I must employ some of his techniques when working with new AFROTC cadets. Typically, these cadets are motivated, but lack the knowledge of how to operate efficiently in a military environment; which is to be expected. Given that most new cadets require a great deal of time and energy to teach the basic skills required to succeed in the AFROTC program, when they do begin to excel, I am rewarded with a sense of fulfillment, pride, and espirit de corps. Truly, as Sinek said, “Fulfillment comes from doing good for others” and perhaps the greatest fulfillment of AFRROTC is the ability to physically interact with and positively influence a wide variety of students from nearly every walk of life. Sinek, in his presentation warns his audience that this type of interaction is essential to obtain a sense of fulfillment, and to be mindful of distractions, such as the internet or social networking, which can replace these genuine interactions. A large portion of Sinek’s presentation was dedicated to vulnerability and risk, in which he spoke of his experiences with the U.S. Marines and their time in basic training. He found that in order for the young Marines to build trust, they must first take a risk and make themselves vulnerable by helping their fellow Marines. At a very young age my parents taught me to value discipline, manners, and to show and treat people with respect. In addition to these ‘staples’ of my upbringing, excelling in academics and on the athletic fields was where I further grew as a leader and learned to work with others to further distinguish myself from my peers. Since freshman year, the Junior Reserves Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program has been an invisible hand of guidance that strived to bring out the best in me. This longstanding program has an impact on me in ways so innovative, it is impossible to find another program filled with diverse exhibitions of life lessons, discipline, and teamwork. JROTC has given me a lifelong readiness to combat the harsh realities of the real world that exist, which in return has helped me better myself and my community in contributions to being a citizen in the United States of America.

The author points out various examples of the Corps short-comings throughout history. With the Marine Corps already struggling to stay atop its game, it didn’t shed positive light on the situations. With that said, it’s hard to point out the flaws of the Corps without also showing its achievements and how we can overcome any obstacle we are faced with.
Trust is the foundational attribute that every professional Soldier should possess. Despite sustained military conflicts throughout the world over the past thirteen years, we have still been able to maintain firm belief in our reliability as an Army. When it comes to confidence from the public other organizations such as the police, the government, the media, and various other organizations do not have the same level of trust that the American people have in us. Trust is the most important of the five characteristics of the Army profession. Without trust we would lose the support of the American public, trust is the embodiment of our profession, and trust drives the four other characteristics of the Army profession.

As the bus entered the heavily guarded military instillation, I gazed upon the sign that read, "Be All that You Can Be." When the bus stopped, several angry Drill Instructors boarded and began introducing us to a very colorful vocabulary, usually reserved for drunken Sailors. They instructed us to gather our belongings, get off the bus and assemble in a circular formation. As I searched for the strength to get up, I found myself moving, while several Drill Instructors yelled at us for our clumsy attempt to dismount the bus and fall into formation. I wondered if I had made the right choice. However, I have come to realize that my military experiences have tremendously enhanced my self-worth. From those first eight
The subject of this book has affect my life by serving as a reality check of what my Marine predecessors went through in order for me to be able to obtain the deep-rooted fighting tactics today. I will never have to deal with and survive the adversities that the Marines of Fox Company did. It also affected me by teaching me that as a Marine, no matter what struggles may present themselves, I will always thrive and keep fighting.
The culture and climate of a well-disciplined unit should be apparent by its strong core values and attributes displayed by its unit members. Recruiting and processing qualified applicants with good moral values and strong character traits is where it starts. In addition, Basic Combat Training (BCT) further strengthens a Soldier’s moral fiber, focuses on building strong leadership skills, and instills the core values of the Army. The Army needs “standard bearers,” not Soldiers and Leaders who choose the easy wrong over the hard right. Providing proper training and honest feedback will create competence in our military ethics. We need Soldiers and Leaders of strong character that will teach, coach, and mentor the next generation of leaders. A positive command climate and demanding culture is the substance of developing unit cohesion and esprit de corps. Army ethics will continue to struggle if it does not have leaders at every level to enforce the importance of its core values and principles. A strong culture and positive climate play a vital role in shaping our force for the future.
The constant presence with his troops was the most significant act of building cohesive teams through mutual trust. In Fact, “how he found the time and energy to be constantly with his frontline troops and still direct the overall activities of the division was a mystery.” 1 Interacting with your subordinates shows that you care. A leader that trains with his subordinates also earns credibility. How Soldiers trust, weights leader’s sound judgment for leading troops and accomplishing missions, regardless complexity.
When a leader can instill trust in their soldier and get them to do something without instilling fear; the work quality will be greater and the output will be greater. Why? Because a soldier will trust a good leader’s word and even if the leader is not around all the time, the soldier will want to continue to do the right thing because the integrity and trust of the leader is greatly valued to the soldier and will conclusively generate the foundation of loyalty.
The United States Marine Corps is a frequently misunderstood, occasionally maligned but more frequently mythologized division of the U.S. Armed Forces. Sometimes its role is perceived as overlapping the roles and responsibilities of its military counterparts such as the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force. However, as the exhaustive text by Victor Krulak shows, it is far more often seen as enhancing, focusing and insuring the roles and responsibilities. As the original pressing of Krulak's text was completed in 1984, a great many of the sentiments that permeate First in Fight: An Inside View of the U.S. Marine Corps carry pointedly Cold War-related messages and imperatives. However, an open-minded consideration of the text demonstrates a particular relevance for the servicemen and women of today's U.S. Marine Corps.
Riggio et al.’s book, The Art of Followership: How great followers create great leaders and organizations, published by Jossey-Bass assesses the various functions, which followers can navigate in an organization through his or her rapport with a leader. The book is divided among four sections, which are defining and redirecting followership, effective followership, the pitfalls and challenges of followership, and followers and leaders-research, practice and the future (Riggio et al., 2008). These following sections in this paper will discuss and summarize two chapters, which I strongly preferred and have experienced in the military.
