A giant is afraid of insects.
This is situational irony because, it is ironic that a person that is a lot bigger than almost everything, is afraid of little insects that are way smaller than he/she is. That would not be commonly expected.
A girl is crying. Her best friend says, “You’re real happy, aren’t you?”
This is verbal irony because the friend knows that her best friend isn’t really happy, and she is being sarcastic.
After several weeks of 100 degree weather, the forecast is for temperatures in the low 90’s. The weather forecaster says, “We’re expecting temperatures in the low 90s. I might have to wear my coat tomorrow!”
This is situational irony because it is not expected for someone to be wearing a coat in that type of weather.

This is situational irony because that person must have been really good, in order for him to do that in his very first game. Knowing that he was inexperienced and that it was his first game, you wouldn’t expect for him to be that good …show more content…
The narrator toast to Fortunato’s long life.
This is situational irony because when people toast they are celebrating in a way, and the fact that the narrator was toasting to it is ironic because he ended up killing him.
Fortunato’s jester attire becomes his funeral attire. He is masquerading as a fool, and he is taken for one.
This is situational irony because, that is the attire that he wears when he fools them into letting him kill them, so that creates their funeral also.
Montresor implores Fortunato to return and not go any farther, telling him that his health is precious.
This is verbal irony because Montresor is being sarcastic in a way because he really doesn’t care about Fortunato’s health because he plans on killing him anyways.
The previous night’s football game (or any other sporting contest) Michael was leaving his football game, and he was really depressed because his team had lost 6-46 to an easy team to beat, and his mom, dad, older brother, and younger sister, came in from out of town to watch him and his team play. When he got home, his older brother was in his bedroom and he looks at Michael and says, “You’re team played fantastic
The first example of situational irony would be Fortunato’s name, which means fortunate in Italian, an ironic name for someone who is about to be left in the catacombs to die. Another example of irony is when Montresor says, “It must be understood that neither by word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will. I continued as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation” (Poe, 3). Obviously this is dramatic irony as Fortunato has no idea that Montresor is smiling because he will kill him rather than actually being happy to meet him. Also verbal irony is present when Montresor says,
situational irony refers to circumstances in which characters find themselves which suggest a specific outcome but
Dramatic Irony is when there is a scene in the short story or novel (or whatever you are reading or watching) that has a character or characters that don’t understand or know what is going on around them. An example of this in “Just Lather that’s all” is when Captain Torrez walks into the barber shop; the barber was a rebel and the Captain is trying to kill all the rebels. The reason this is Dramatic Irony is that we know that the barber recognizes the Captain however, the Captain does not acknowledge that the barber is a rebel. We think he does not know that the barber is a rebel. The reason that that is Dramatic Irony is that it is somewhat connected the end of the short story. When the Captain leaves the shop he says “They told me that you’d kill me. I came to find out. But killing isn’t easy. You can take my word for it.” This shows that the Captain knew that the barber was a rebel and wanted to see if he
Irony is a technique that uses words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning. For example, dramatic irony is a type of irony which is shown in the first Shrek movie. Fiona loves Shrek but only Donkey and the audience know. In this situation, dramatic irony is being created because the character Shrek does not know that Fiona loves him but the audience does. The short stories “The Lottery” the reader may find both situational and dramatic irony that both create the ironic ending.
Situational irony occurs when there is a situation which appears to have an assumed conclusion, but then something ironic happens and the end result is different than what was expected. Harrison, the unique son of George and Hazel, is a tall, strong man who is attempting to overthrow the government. He manages to break out of jail and takes control of the television station, declaring himself the Emperor. Just as it appears that he is going to succeed in his takeover, the Handicapper General came into the studio. ”She fired twice, and the Emperor and the Empress were dead before they hit the floor.” This is not the expected outcome and creates irony in this situation.
In the novel ‘’Night’’ Eliezer survives from Auschwitz and surprisingly almost dies from food poisoning. The irony in this is that he could of died many ways at Auschwitz but ultimately almost dies from food poisoning. That is also a form of situational irony meaning that the situation turns opposite of what you expect.Another example of situational irony in’’Night’’ is when Chlomo Wiesel makes a remark about the yellow Jewish star, mocking it by asking if its lethal, but wearing the yellow star is what kills him in the story. In this essay I’ll be giving you more three more examples of irony throughout the novel ‘’Night’’.
In the very beginning of the story, Jonathan Harker is traveling to Dracula’s castle in place of his boss who couldn’t go. His intentions are good so he can help his boss and make some money off of the land he is planning to sell, however his intentions get turned around when Dracula traps him inside the castle and he fears for his life. These are examples of situational irony.
Irony is a useful device for giving stories many unexpected twists and turns. In Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour," irony is used as an effective literary device. Situational irony is used to show the reader that what is expected to happen sometimes doesn't. Dramatic irony is used to clue the reader in on something that is happening that the characters in the story do not know about. Irony is used throughout Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" through the use of situational irony and the use of dramatic irony.
An example of dramatic irony is when Fortunato tells Montresor not to worry about his health and that “the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I will not die of a cough” (POE 238) Montresor then replies, “True–true.” When the reader reads this, they see that Fortunato is clueless of Montresor’s true plan is and while he tells Fortunato he will be all right. That he will not die, he is planning to kill him. This is dramatic because we as the reader feel a sense of sorrow because we know the truth about what will

Most of the time, verbal irony is used in a somewhat sarcastic way. An obvious example of this is the guard saying he will take Madame Schacter to the hospital, but he will most likely kill her. This is known because of the amount of killing rather than helping that happened during this time. Another example that, in contrast, is not sarcastic is in the beginning when Elie’s father states, “The yellow star? So what? It’s not lethal…” (11). This is irony because he did, in fact, die from the star as it marked him for collection by the Germans. They also said the war would not affect them, but
Situational irony occurs when an event is not what is expected by the reader or the audience. For example, “ which is a lot, because they are REAL FANS, by which I mean drunk”(Barry 3). This is an example of situational irony because you are not expecting the “real fans” to be druk. The reader may think that they actually are real fans or they are just rude people, not drunk. When Barry is talking about the “real fans” that are standing up at a sporting events when it is unnecessary, he is making fun of the people that are unexpectedly drunk and probably will not remember that happened the day after the game. Another example of situational irony would be “But when they’re dealing with somebody they consider to be not useful, or unimportant, especially if that person pretty much has to take the abuse-an underlining, a salesclerk,a waiter,a flight attendant- these people feel free to be rude. These people are what we call ‘jerks’”(Barry 2). When Barry started to talk about all these rude people the reader may think that there is an actual specific name for these types of people, nothing as simple as “jerks”. Situational irony intended response is mostly the same as sarcasm intended response. Only that situational irony does not make you think as
The dramatic irony is that Fortunato is going to die, and by the hands of Montresor. Montresor also expresses worry for him when he is currently killing him, which also shows the psychotic state he is
People watch other individuals experience irony all the time. When something is ironic it means that the thing that was to happen, did not happen the way it was thought to happen. Sometimes irony happens to those who least expect it or irony happens to everyone. There have been songs, television ads, and stories written about irony or that have included ironic events or details. One piece of literature that contains a lot of irony is Stephen Crane’s “The Open Boat”. Crane uses irony in many different ways in the story to tell of four individuals who survive their ship being wrecked and everyone else aboard has drown.
Every day people experience ironic situations. Whether it is the bus leaving early when someone is already running late for work or an obstetrician missing a delivery because she is in labor; irony happens. Poetry is life in the form of art, and without irony, it would not be as interesting or relatable. “Irony in poetry occurs when a discrepancy exists between two levels of meaning or experience… Skillfully used, irony is a powerful way of making a pointed comment or manipulating a reader’s emotions” (445). Be it situational irony where the situation itself is opposite a reader’s expectation, verbal irony where a poet manipulates tone to say something opposite of what the words say or dramatic irony which is when the reader sees something
