In dramatic Irony, occurs when the readers are aware about what is going to happen, but the characters do not have any clue about what is going on. In “The Black Cat”, the story begins with the main character sentenced to death, but with one story to tell. The Irony here is that he was not aware about how his life was going to change. In the beginning he is describing how happy was his childhood and how much he loved his pets. In the second paragraph of the story the main character describes his personality as a child in the first sentence “From my infancy I was noted for the docility and humanity of my disposition. My tenderness of heart was even so conspicuous as to make me the jest of my companions” (3). He was a lovely child with an uncertain future. Another irony finds it on the story is how he describes the fidelity and love that the man can own “There is something in the unselfish and self-sacrificing love of a brute, which goes directly to the heart of him who has had frequent occasion to test the paltry friendship and gossamer fidelity of mere Man” (3-4). When the story is progressing he is transforming to a violent man without any act of compassion towards his faithful pet, which actually represented faithfulness. He is represented himself as a child with a lovely personality, but he is not aware that the lovely child was going to transform in an alcoholic man with a violent personality willing to kill mercilessly.

Imagine being branded and thinking nothing of it, where the brand is later used to designate you as a target, leading to death. In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, there’s a fair amount of irony incorporated. Three examples of irony found in the text are the uses of gold stars to mark Jews and how Chlomo thought nothing of them, how the Jews originally thought of the forced evacuation to Auschwitz, and Madame Schacters speaking of fire. One example of irony, in this case being dramatic irony, is how the Jews were forced to wear yellow stars, branding them as Jewish. Most people, including Chlomo, thought that there was nothing wrong with wearing a star.

There is situational irony, which is when the situation turns out differently than expected. Also, dramatic irony is present, which is when you as a reader knows more than the character. The authors seem to base their whole story around irony to surprise their readers.

The literary element of irony is perfectly demonstrated in the short story, “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” This tale opens by introducing a markedly vain emperor who is later fooled by a couple of con artists. The two tricksters convince the emperor that they can tailor an outfit so magnificent and extraordinary that it appears invisible to those “…who [are] too stupid or too incompetent to appreciate its quality” (Anderson). The emperor, being intrigued, supplies the two men with many valuable materials and requests for them to fabricate such a suit for him. Unwilling to look idiotic or incompetent both the emperor and his subjects pretend to be enamored with the invisible, ostensibly beautiful, garment.

People watch other individuals experience irony all the time. When something is ironic it means that the thing that was to happen, did not happen the way it was thought to happen. Sometimes irony happens to those who least expect it or irony happens to everyone. There have been songs, television ads, and stories written about irony or that have included ironic events or details. One piece of literature that contains a lot of irony is Stephen Crane’s “The Open Boat”. Crane uses irony in many different ways in the story to tell of four individuals who survive their ship being wrecked and everyone else aboard has drown.

For example, he demonstrates situational irony by when Juliet fooled everyone to think she was dead on her wedding day but she didn’t know that she fooled Romeo. The thing that makes it ironic was that Juliet expected to fool everyone but she didn’t expected to fool Romeo. For dramatic irony, when Romeo said that he love Tybalt, but Tybalt didn’t know that Romeo was married to his cousin Juliet and being part of the family. This is dramatic irony because when Tybalt calls Romeo a villain, he doesn’t know that Romeo was part of the family. Finally the verbal irony, when Mercutio says to Tybalt right before they fight, “ Look for me tomorrow and thy will find me a grave man,” he means he was serious.
