Analytical Essay: The Great Gatsby

As Gatsby reaches out across the bay the green light evades his grasp, the elusive future receding from his myopic viewpoint. Through the course of time America has been referred to as the Land of the free and opportunity, but as times have changed so have American viewpoints. In The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald creates a love affair based in 1922 using juxtaposition between realist and idealistic views on wealth. F.Scott Fitzgerald creates a parallel between the social attitudes of the time to reveal the demise of the American Dream in what is known as the Roaring Twenties as well as his own personal experience.
As World War I came to a close on November 11, 1918 over the next couple of years the United States saw a change economically as well as socially. Joining the US Army as a Second Lieutenant Fitzgerald came home in 1919 to an America lacking values, postwar attitudes drastically changed as the economy flourished.
