Trump Sucks In his first inauguration speech, which he gave before his first term of presidency, Barack Obama clearly demonstrates the effect he has in his speaking and shows that he has an excellent command of the English language to persuade and grab the attention and focus of his audience. He demonstrates his knowledge well with the use of Metaphor, Anaphora, as well as Allusion. Throughout the entirety of his speech, he uses many tactics to capture his audience, to give them confidence in him as president as well as to show that he is knowledgeable of the history of the US. Barack starts off with the use of Metaphor to exaggerate or exemplify the reforms that he would like to make to the country. One example of this is when he talks about the “rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace.”(3) Here he is saying how inauguration addresses are given at all times, especially those of peace and prosperity. Another example that he portrayed was when he used the phrase “amidst gathering clouds and raging storms.” This example was to exaggerate the ups and lows that the country might be in for, as well as referencing the past to remind the …show more content…

He demonstrates anaphora with the following quote: “Our workers are no less productive...Our minds are no less inventive....Our capacity remains undiminished.”(12) His use of anaphora here is to unite the audience with the use of the word ‘Our’, as well as get the fact into the minds of his audience that America is still as great as it was before. “We will build the roads and bridges...We’ll restore science to its rightful place...We will harness the sun...And we will transform our schools and colleges”(13) is another example of Obama’s understanding of anaphora.
