While there are many beautiful and thought provoking works of art to choose from,
Bonaventure, painted by Virginia Derryberry, piqued my interest with its vibrant color and life.
Honestly, I have not visited many museums, but Virginia's interpretation of Savannah's famous
Bonaventure cemetery leaves me wanting to visit more museums. While browsing the museum there were few that really captured my attention and mesmerized me. I will take this opportunity to describe, analyze, interpret, and judge Virginia's Bonaventure.
Firstly, I will describe in detail Virginia Derryberry's art piece. Bonaventure is an oil painting on canvas and is the largest painting in a series she painted in 1992. Virginia was living in Savannah and teaching

The flowers are pivotal to the painting as they serve many purposes. One of their purposes is to balance out the entirety of the piece. The flowers are also complementary colors that makes the piece vibrant and harmonious. The placement and color draw the viewers eyes, using line of sight, first to the flowers, then to the sculptures. Bonaventure is also full of curved lines, most prominently in the flowers and swan, which gives a very soothing affect, leaving the viewer relaxed. Virginia used several hues and values in the entire painting to create depth and intensity in the painting, giving it vibrant coloring. This gives the painting a very light feeling, contrasting with the cemetery setting. Although Bonaventure is a two-dimensional piece of art,
Virginia uses space and placement to give the appearance of three-dimensions. She overlaps objects several times, such as flowers in front of a pedestal, or a figure in front of trees. Techniques such as this creates the illusion of a three-dimensional image. To add to the illusion, she introduces light with shading and shadow to create the effect of a brightly shinning sun.
Next I will use my analysis of Bonaventure to interpret her piece. Virginia does a
Secondly, the light and colors help to enhance the piece. Due to the oil painting,
The flowers face many angles and are all different, most have contrasting shades of green leaves surrounding the petals and varying stem widths and lengths. This creates interest throughout the painting. To complement the bright yellow flower petals, Van Gogh has detailed a baby blue background with small, vertical and horizontal brush strokes. This contrasts well with the yellow flowers and helps to separate them from the yellow foreground. Also, to break all the yellow sections, he has cleverly used a lighted yellow tint on the bottom half of the vase, rather than shades, which he has used to outline the petals of the flowers. In doing this and by also adding light to the front petals and vase, Van Gogh has added a third dimension to his painting. Like Olley, Van Gogh has painted this artwork in warm colours to create a joyful and uplifting artwork to look at.
There is also a focus on detail on the incense containers. They have a lot of texture and strings on it. Light reflects from the metal, similar to how it reflects off the fabric of the dresses. The use of the incense swinging to the center, the wings, the similar paint colours and the similar physical features insists on a unison between these paintings.
To balance the painting Ruysch placed highlighted blossoms and leaves against the dark left half of the canvas and silhouetted them against the light wall area on the right. The artist uses light coming from the left side of the painting, which creates a main view of the center of the image. The light hits the center of the bouquet that
The work of art been depicted on the top is an oil on canvas painting named Composition VII and was painted by Wassily Kandinsky in 1913. In this painting, Kandinsky decides to choose orange as one of the primary colors to express an emotion instead of a citrus fruit. He also chooses to paint black lines because of they add the feeling of depth and they direct the motion of the painting. The variety of colors been displayed throughout the canvas are like a composer uses notes so the viewer can develop a feeling of rhythm. No color stands entirely on its own, instead, Kandinsky places one color next to another to create an image of energy flowing.
However, nothing is being talked about in today’s art world than past art work. For example, Leonardo Davinci’s Mona lisa .I am writing this paper to describe a painting which i have chosen to research on. The painting i chose to research on is The Lovers by Riza-yi’ Abbasi. It was
One artist painted a beautiful portrait of their mother which was incredibly detailed and proportioned. Another artist painted a city landscape which made the big buildings pop out by its amazing depth and shades. The final artist painted a large group of fishes; they added in warm colors to create a relaxing mood.
The positioning of each of the figures causes the painting to feel crowded, considering each character is placed right next to one another. This technique places emphasis and focus on the story occurring between each of the figures rather than on the landscape in the background. However, Titian “subordinates” the painting by creating a bright sun that peeks through the clouds in the upper-right-hand corner of the background, giving viewers a bit of distraction from the concentrated foreground (Frank 82). The bright and brilliant colors of the painting are a result from Titian’s usage of oil paint. Because oil paint is very thin and slow drying, artists who use this medium are able to layer and blend the colors of an artwork to create more distinct and deep colors that stand out (Frank 124). The colors also appear very soft, resulting from the way in which Titian painted the artwork, probably using very light, thin brushstrokes. This technique further compliments the luminosity, or the glow and brightness of the work when it is viewed in person. A slight illusion of depth is given by Titian’s use of shadowy murky colors in the background, while he uses lighter and more luminous colors on the subjects in the foreground of the painting. While some may suggest the small sloping hill in the background also gives
The background is what sets the mood in a painting. The subtle, yet impressionable brush strokes with the well blended color.
There is some contrast in the painting to show the different sections in the painting. The design of the painting seems to very organized to show compassion in the drawing and the composition makes the painting look very clean and
The pattern created by the lines in the large leaves create a rhythmic background that enhances the images in the foreground. The element of space is used to create a frame within a frame in the painting.
The sizes of these canvases allow viewers to immerse into the painting and the color with no distractions from the outside world. The simplicity of no distinct lines between the orangey red and the brown created a serene feeling. The red draws the viewers’ eye straight to it because it stands out against the darkness of the rest of the painting. Each color has its own rectangle and own size that the imperfectness of the piece calms the viewer down. The visible brushstrokes add a texture to the piece that it shows that the painting itself is more than three rectangles on a
The artwork looks realistic in sense of light. Emphasize on the light and the shadow makes the boats and the people in the painting look more fluid. The use of these two elements makes the painting feel like a vision or a dream; you can see the place and event but cannot really make out the faces of people and other small and unimportant details.
On the field, the painter used a sparkling blue and purple, which contrasts with the color of lights. It can give us a feeling of calm and peace. And the whole painting used the same short paintbrush strokes. If we follow the direction of the strokes, you can see that they form many lines and giving us a feeling of relaxing. A lot of “lines” or strokes are repeated.
This work of art is on a painting of Aqua life that displayed mediation, rest, and peace.
