Ancient Egypt: From Belief Systems to a Civilization

Ancient Egypt was a captivating and intricate civilization. Over the years, historians have found it easier to study this civilization, rather than other historical civilizations, because the Egyptians went through great lengths to record their history. Besides being decent record keepers, they were very religious, and “ahead of their time,” due to their technological and economic breakthroughs. Because of the aspects of this culture, it has to be one of the greatest civilizations of the world.

The Ancient Egyptians were a unique community who began in a primitive environment and proceeded to flourish into an advance people group. Their ideology was unconventional in the way that it featured more than one deity. They were economically efficient with a thriving trade system, and their family units were based on kinship marriages. Their civilization oscillated between success and failure, however at the peak was a culture that is still observable and intriguing to modern day anthropologists.

The belief in the afterlife answered the enduring questions of purpose and destiny. Ancient Egyptians lived their lives preparing for the afterlife. As soon as a pharaoh came into power he began planning and constructing his tomb, so that if he died early, his journey to the afterlife would not be delayed. The ancient Egyptians' attitude towards death was influenced by their belief in immortality. They regarded death as a temporary interruption, rather than the cessation of life. To ensure the continuity of life after death, people paid homage to the gods, both during and after their life on earth. There were four jars, each for the safekeeping of particular human organs: the stomach, intestines, lungs, and liver, all of which, it was believed, would be needed in the afterlife. There was no jar for the heart as the Egyptians believed it to be the seat of the soul, and so it was left inside the body. When the soul left the body at death, it was thought to appear in the Hall of Truth to stand before Osiris for judgement. The religion in Egypt is extremely complex, it had no end of gods. There gods were linked to natural phenomenons. The king of the gods was Ra who was also the god of the sun. The gods in ancient Egypt were supposed to be calm; they thought this since the Nile river was calm and they connected gods to the Nile river. The Egyptians believed that if they did what they were supposed to then the gods were supposed to fulfill what they want. They pleased the gods by worshiping them. They believed that the gods lived in the great pyramids.

In ancient Egyptian society, religion and politics in were inseparable. Religion affected everything in ancient Egypt. Every community had a guardian deity or “Lord of the city” who illustrate the powers of nature. Art, literature, and philosophy were all influenced by religion. In Egypt, gods and goddesses represented different aspects of life, “natural forces and phenomena”, and the Egyptians would appease them through their offerings and rituals held at temples and elsewhere, so that they would continue to function in accordance with divine order. “Gods were assumed to be present throughout the world, capable of influencing natural events and the course of human lives. People interacted with them in temples and unofficial shrines, for personal reasons as well as for larger goals of state rites. Egypt was a very powerful empire lasting more than 3000 years, which is divided into 8 or 9 periods, sometimes called kingdoms. But what made their empire, so powerful, what made it last more than 3 millennia. Egyptologist believes that it was due to Egypt’s strong bond with their gods and goddesses and their mythological beliefs. The gods and goddesses and the myths were the foundations of Egypt’s cultural structure.

Egypt is located in the northeast corner of Africa and southeast Asia. It is also near the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea and the Nile River. Egypt was polytheistic which means the believed in many gods. The Egyptians believed in afterlife so when someone died they believed that they would come back as a new spirit, that is why they would bury them with all of their valuables so the could have them in the next life. When someone died they would mummify them by extracting the brains through the nostrils and then remove the internal organs. Then they would fill the body cavity with liner made of drying powder and sprinkled spices on the body. After that they would wrap the body with strips of liner, this process usually took months to complete.

The definition chosen was culture is the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, or age group. Basically it is saying it is the way a group of peoples out view. In our nation, our culture is completely different from any other nation, we are tons more progressive, and that is just the way it works. In ancient civilizations they too had their own culture. Ancient Egyptian religion belief in or worship of more than one god and rituals. They devoted their time and effort on wealth for survival in the next world because the Egyptians stressed on an afterlife. After they stressed the survival of their souls after death with providing grave goods, tombs, and offerings to the bodies and they own spirits. The Egyptian religious art was influenced by many factors but the main reason was to provide company to the deceased in the other world. They stressed that the afterlife was everything and need to prepare for it. It included detailed work of human beings, nature, and certain life they were living.
