Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX and Tesla, said, “I agree that we will be able to make it to Mars, but it probably won’t be as easy as you think, even if you think it’s going to be really hard.”
In the book The Martian, Mark Watney is an astronaut who is left behind on Mars and has to try to survive and get back to Earth without dying, and to get Earth to realize he is alive.
The reason The Martian is so good is because the author has a great background in science, he utilizes humor, and he makes you feel the suspense. The reason Weir was able to write The Martian is because of his background in science. “Born in 1972 to a particle physicist and an electronics engineer, Weir was immediately immersed in science and technology” (Weir A&E).

The only reason Andy Weir ever became an author was because he was fired from his job. “In 1999 AOL merged with Netscape. Weir lost his job but gained a sizable severance package that allowed him to do, full-time, what he had always wanted to do: write fiction” (Weir A&E).
Weir’s science background and love of writing led him to become an amazing author.
Weir does a good job of incorporating humor into The Martian, especially during times when Mark talks to NASA. “My conversation with NASA was boring and riddled with technical details, so I’ll paraphrase it for you:
Me: “This is obviously a clog. How about I take it apart and check the internal tubing?”
NASA: (after five hours of deliberation) “ No. You’ll screw it up and die.”
So I took it apart” (Weir 153).
Lead out of quote 1 (add more context): Weir uses humor in the way that Mark reacts to NASA and talks about stuff. Weir also uses humor to describe Mark’s situation mainly when it gets rough. “So I get to… Live Another Sol (A sol is a day on mars and is slightly longer than a day on Earth) ! (starring Mark Watney as … probably Q. I’m no James Bond)” (Weir
Tension, humor, and foreshadowing are some examples of elements that readers will find in The Martian. In The Martian, astronaut Mark Watney is left behind on Mars. Because of a dust storm, Mark's teammates believe that he is dead and left him behind. The Martian is a science fiction book that gives readers an idea of how people might be able to colonize Mars and gives readers an idea of what space is like. The Martian has an author that self-published his book, and who used humor and foreshadowing to keep his readers engaged.
In this context, Weir uses this to show how Mark keeps the attitude light, preferably more than thinking of how many ways he can die on Mars. Another way Weir uses humor is to show really how long he was on Mars for.
Visiting Mars is even harder than that, with a whole additional set of problems. We can probably visit Mars in the next 20-30 years, but colonization is something on a much larger scale that we really don't have the resources available to do, unless we're willing to make substantial sacrifices, and continue those sacrifices since an off-world colony won't be anywhere near self-sustaining. The Moon will likely be the first bases in our lifetimes, and possibly Mars. Serious colonization of either isn't likely for decades at
Mark Watney was brought onto Ares 3 (the mission to Mars) mostly because of his charisma. When put under pressure and tough situations, he deals with this by cracking jokes, ”Yes, of course duct tape works in a near vacuum. Duct tape works anywhere. Duct tape is magic and should be worshipped.” During high stress moments, Watney is constantly making remarks like this quote. Being able to poke fun at a bad situation is Watney’s way of easing tension levels and making the best of bad situations. Having this charisma was crucial for giving Watney hope to keep pushing on each day, which is why he never changed, having any other personality would be counterproductive to his main goal of getting rescued. Being able to analysis whatever problem is thrown at him then from there ease stress from cracking jokes was Watney’s way of
I found myself really engaged with the characters and at the edge of my seat at the end of the movie. I can’t say that I related to Mark the botanist who was stranded on Mars, but I can say that I was rooting for him throughout the entire movie and didn’t want to see him die alone in space.
The astronaut, Mark Watney is an existentialist who refuses to believe in fate, but believe that his destiny is hold by his own. In “The Martian”, Matt Damon perfectly interprets how an astronaut remains calm to solve his problems, for he has to find ways to make it till
In some day when he is doing normal things in his schedule, the sudden plan about the journey into Mars – the maned vehicle is being jumped out his mind. He also creates the program to
“Six days into what should be the greatest two months of my life, and it’s turned into a nightmare” (Weir 1). The first scene of Andy Weir’s The Martian is fraught with tension, which is aptly summarized by its fourth sentence above (the three that precede it are sadly less than school-appropriate). Built up by the in media res opening, the ample indirect characterization, and the diary (or in this case log) format, Weir’s entry for Sol 6 provides information on the plot, subject, and therefore theme of the novel. Based on Watney’s practical resilience, his clear, humorous view of his situation, and the suspense of the day, much of the novel’s content can be predicted. Through these 3 things, Weir brings up the theme that persistence and a sense of humor can make a difference between life and death in times of crisis.
“The Martian” is a sci-fi novel which recounts the story of Mark Watney through his log entries. Watney is an astronaut who was caught in an accident on Mars and was left behind by his friends who thought he was dead. Watney has to overcome many obstacles by himself and become the first person to live in Mars.
The Martian by Andy Weir is one of the most realistic science fiction books you will ever read. Filled with a page turning plotline, Andy Weir sends the reader on an intergalactic journey. The book opens up right away to a young astronaut, Mark Watney, who is stranded on Mars after his team and him get separated during a sand storm. Immediately the reader is amused by Watneys’ humor and positive attitude towards anything that comes his way. The only way Watney can express his thoughts and ideas is through his logs, which he records, everyday. The dialogue at times can be dry and boring, due to the amount of science and math needed to explain interplanetary space travel. However, Weir makes up for this later in the story when he includes humorous
Douglas Adams uses strange humor in his short novels and books. His humor is a lot different from most people's sense of humor, that's just how he is and he doesn't care what people think. In the book Life the universe and everything, also last Chance to see. Douglas adams uses some different ways of showing his humor. The way he implies his humor in this books is the way he doesn't care what he says I like how he is showing his humor cause i kind of have a strange sense of humor so i get some of it but some of the stuff he says is a little to much or i don't really understand it the first time, so I have to read it a few extra times to understand it and know what he's talking about
The way in which Adams jocularly illustrates Marvin’s depressed attitude makes it funny. This instance is additionally funny because no one would expect a robot to have any emotions. Another way Adams’s characterization reveals his humorous style in this case is the fact that Marvin is so depressed he makes witty remarks that can make one laugh. This characterization is also shown in Zaphod’s attitude when he says, “‘If there is anything more important than my ego I want it found and shot now’” (98).
Many said that Mars is the best planet that is suitable for us to live in that's why many space exploration has done by NASA to get there to explore if we can really survive and search for possible life. Just recently, the Red Planet was featured in the movie "The Martian" starring Matt Damon as Mark Watney who survived 549 SOL's which is equivalent to 564 Earth days. And late last year, sightings of a lake on the Red Planet urged NASA to investigate more if life does exist.
The Martian, written by Anthony Weir in 2011, is about a botanist turned astronaut named Mark Watney. It is set in November 2035 and is the third mission of the 2030’s that NASA has sent astronauts up to Mars. The story really starts when a giant storm sweeps through Mars and Watney is hit by a pole that fell down and is knocked away from the rest of the crew. They search for him but can’t find him and are forced to launch from Mars, under the assumption that Watney is dead. A few hours later, however, he awakens and discovers that he is now alone on Mars and is forced to figure out how to survive until he can be rescued. He grows a garden for himself using human waste and learns how to correctly ration food. He creates water by dangerously converting rocket fuel and other chemicals and he figures out a way to communicate with NASA that he is still alive. NASA comes up with a way to safely rescue him by changing the direction of the returning crew. At the end of the movie, he is returned safely to Earth. It was made into a film a few years later, directed by Ridley Scott, and hit theaters in October 2015. It is said to be one of the most scientifically accurate movies of all time. Despite this, there are a few mistakes.
Ridley Scott’s film The Martian explores the impact of extreme seclusion on an individual through the protagonist who is stranded on Mars. Similarly, Alfonso Cuaron’s film Gravity explores loneliness in space and the disastrous effects this can have. Both Scott and Cuaron develop their characters in order to survive extra-terrestrial environments and to avoid total isolation; however, Scott conveys the ways in which humour is used to maintain a positive attitude in order to survive; whilst Cuaron’s text deals more seriously with the negative impacts of isolation and highlights trauma and its effect on a person. The idea of isolation is fully explored by Scott and Cuaron through their use of characterisation, filmic techniques and symbols.
