War and the concept of war has impacted the world and has highly impacted literary works. Two works that have been written in the times of war and are primarily about war are, “Why Is This Age Worse…?” by Anna Akhmatova and “I Know of No Better World,” by Ingeborg Bachmann. Akhmatova wrote her poem post World War One while Ingeborg Bachmann’s poem is assumed to be written sometime after World War Two. Akhmatova and Bachmann had experienced different lives; however, wrote similarity about the same concept. Both authors wrote about how treacherous war was and their experiences with war and how living during the time of war was hell. The war even ignited from the western continents and countries where she lived which Akhmatova showed by stating, “In the west the falling light still glows,” (Akhmatova, 5). Like many other countries, the four main reasons Russia entered World War One was militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism (Browne). While Akhmatova had experiences pertaining to more of World War One, Bachmann experienced more of World War Two. Bachmann was born in Austria, which was taken over by Hitler and the Nazis. When Bachman was twelve years old, she experienced Nazi troops march through her town (Ingeborg Bachmann). The majority of Bachmann’s writings dealt with women in failing relationships, the nature of art, and the inadequacy of language (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica). However, “I know of No Better World,” by Bachmann differed from her normal writings and literature. She specifically focused on how she saw World War Two and the Nazis from her point of view. When the Nazis took over Austria, along with other parts of the continent, the Nazis had just started taking over a few years after Bachmann was born. Bachmann was born in 1926, and the rise of Hitler started in the year of 1933 (Nazi Party). If it was not for Hitler and six years of Nazi Party foreign policy, the war would not have been ignited and Bachmann would not have experienced the rise of the Nazis (Nazi Party).
