Annabel Lee is a poem that takes place in a fairy tale setting. It is narrated by a young man who describes himself as a child. The man falls in love with a young woman named Annabel Lee and they live in a kingdom by the sea. The narrator and Annabel Lee are elated and have a deep romantic love for one another. Their love for each other is so intense, in fact, that the seraphim in Heaven become jealous and murder Annabel Lee. The narrator is devastated, but does not give up on their love. He states that his love for Annabel will still continue even after her death. Every night he dreams of her and sleeps next to her in her tomb. Perhaps one of my favorite lines from this poem is in stanza five, “...And neither the angels in

The man at first is amused by the Raven and starts asking it questions. For every question asked, the raven always replies, “nevermore”. The man takes the answer literally which causes him to slowly fall into madness. “Is there – is there balm in Gilead? – tell me – tell me, I implore!" This line shows the narrator asking the bird a biblical question, basically asking if there is hope in the future, or a possibility of comfort and peace. This line stood out to me because I think it’s a question I could find myself asking. Sometimes after experiencing something painful like a tragedy or losing someone we loved we can often wonder if we’ll
The narrator can anticipate the answers of the raven, knowing that the only word it speaks is "nevermore", and tortures himself even more by asking certain questions to which the answer nevermore would devastate him. He asks if there is balm in Gilead. He even goes so far as to ask the raven if Lenore is in Paradise-"within the distant Aidenn, it shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore-" (733). The answer "nevermore" sends the narrator into a rage. He calls the raven a "prophet", but cannot place if it is a prophet of evil or of good.
In Annabel Lee, Edgar Allan Poe uses Third Person limited narration. personification, and imagery to show that love can prevail even if the thing you loved is gone.
Unlike “The Raven’s” narrator, the narrator of “Annabel Lee” does not perform actions throughout the poem. Instead, his action is limited to the second and ending stanzas. He does, however, react emotionally to the action of the angels. In the second stanza, he “[loves] with a love that [is] more than love” and Annabel Lee loves the narrator back in the same fashion. Additionally, “she lived with no other thought/ Than to love and be loved by” the narrator.

Another one of Poe’s popular piece of work, “The Pit and the Pendulum,” tells the story of a man who has just been placed in a prison designed for torture. In Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” and “Pit and the Pendulum,” Poe creates suspense for the reader through the use of an unreliable narrator, his perplexing tone, and his use of gothic imagery.
“The Raven” and “Annabel Lee” both have many similarities and difference that depicts the reaction of the death of a beautiful women such as that express the main idea. Both poems are using the style of repetition. Love is the one thing everyone strives to find in their lifetime. Losing a loved one is one of the most traumatic experiences in a person’s life; Edgar Allan Poe explores the feelings and lives of his characters after they lose their loved ones. Poe’s most well-known poem “The Raven” is an excellent example of his beliefs. First published in January 1845, “The Raven” is frequently recognized for its stylized language and supernatural atmosphere. The poem tells the story of a talking raven’s mysterious visit to a distraught lover, and the man's slow fall into madness. Another one of Poe’s poems, “Annabel Lee”, has a similar plot involving a man mourning the loss of his loved one. Despite the differences in mood, Edgar Allan Poe uses similar
From short stories to poems, Edgar Allan Poe is most known for his daunting yet elegant stories. Initiating modern detective stories with, "The Murder in the Rue Morgue,"(1842) Poe goes on to write "Annabel Lee" and "The Raven"(1845) which are read and picked apart by all ages in school. "The Raven," is a short story following a man filled with sorrow, surrounded by depressing events allowing his mind to control the universe around. This tale tortures the man and any reader actually practicing complete readers comprehension. "Annabel Lee," is a love poem by Mr. Poe that rhymes line for line giving us a taste of the romance between the narrator and this Annabel
Poe’s philosophy is depicted in “Annabel Lee” and “The Raven”; a man of dark and depressing poems who was influenced during his hard, emotional, life to write. His poems describe the mental and emotion devastations a person’s state of mind can reach. Despite his hard life and mysterious death he faced, the speaker can recognize his struggles through his life to become successful with his literary works.
Literary Analysis The Raven is arguably the most famous out of all of Edgar Allen Poe’s pieces, but it is also one of the saddest. The Raven is a poem about a man mourning the loss of his love, Lenore. The poem begins with the unnamed narrator distracting himself with a book on bleak December night when he hears a tapping on his chamber door. He begins to tell himself that it is only a visitor, and eagerly awaits the next day.
The poem “The Raven” was published in 1845, after his mother had died and around the time his wife was dying. The poem “Annabel Lee” was published in 1849, after Poe’s wife had already passed on. It believed that “The Raven” is about Poe’s late mother ( or late foster mom ) or Poe’s dying wife. It is also believed that “Annabel Lee” is about Poe’s late wife Virginia. In “Annabel Lee” in lines 38/39 the speaker says “And so all the night-tide I lie down by the side of my darling - my darling - my life and bride”, which leads readers to believe that Poe’s poem “Annabel Lee” is about his deceased wife virginia. In “The Raven” in lines 93/96 it says “Tell this soul with sorrow laden if, within the distant Aidenn, it shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore”, in these lines the speaker id asking him he will be reunited with a departed loved one. This leads me to think that Poe wrote this poem for either his mother or his wife. The themes of these poems tie together with the reasons they were written. The theme of “Annabel Lee” is love and loss, this is because the speaker is talking about how he has lost his beloved wife. In line 9 of “Annabel Lee” it says “But we loved with a love that was more than love” and in lines 25/26 it says “The the wind came out of the cloud by night chilling and killing my Annabel Lee”, in these lines the speaker is talking about how he loved Annabel Lee and that she had been struck with a chill and it killed her. “The Raven” has two themes. The themes of “The Raven” are love and loss as well as sanity versus madness. In “The Raven” the speaker has lost a loved one by the name of Lenore, this contributes to the love and loss theme. Also in “The Raven” the speaker repeatedly asks a raven questions and the raven
At the bird’s appearance and apparent vocal articulation, he is at first impressed, then saddened. He compares this evening visitor as only another friend which will soon depart, just as “other friends have flown before” (58). But the raven again echoes quite aptly his one-word vocabulary, thus leading the man on to think more deeply about the possibilities that exist at this juncture. Somewhere deep inside him, he has realized that it doesn’t matter what question he poses, the bird will respond the same.
