The story starts in 1943, Denmark when the Nazi has occupied their country for the past three years. One day, a ten-year-old girl named, Annemarie walks home from school with her best Jewish friend named, Ellen.On the way home, two German soldiers stop them and question them why they are running. But Kirsti, a five-year-old sister of Aneemarie, confuses the moment by her rude behavior. When the girls arrive at home, Annemaries's mama, Mrs. Johansen and Mrs. Rosen, Ellen's mother, are very upset to hear about the conflict and warn the girls to be careful encountering German soldiers.
A few weeks later, Mama sends Annemarie, Ellen, and Kirsti to visit Mrs. Hirsch, a Jewish who owns a button-and-thread store, for Kiirst's button was lost. When they arrive, they realized that the Germans closed Mrs. Hirsch’s store because she is Jewish. Upon hearing this, Mama becomes very worried. That night, Mama, Mr. Johansen (Annemarie's papa) and Peter (the engaged man who was supposed to marry with Annemarie's dead sister, Lise) discussed about the event. Peter, as a member of the Danish Resistance, explains that life will only get harder for the Jews in Denmark. Annemarie wonders what will happen to Mrs. Hirsch and the Rosens, but the adults tells her that their friends will take care of them.

The story is made up by one of the main characters, Anna, who tells the story to a few other schoolmates at the bus shelter. At the end of the novel, Heidi is left alone and has to defend herself from the bombs with no food or protection. The theme of the novel is morality, which is displayed various times during the novel. The meaning of morality is knowing the difference of what is right and what is wrong. When the casket was opened there were cloths inside which shocked the girls. Peter then takes all of the cloths and distributes them to all of the visitors to wear. The German police chief lined them up and began transporting everyone to the extermination camp in Treblinka. As they lined up to board the trains, a Nazi officer stoped in front of Isaac and told him to get out of the line. He was paralyzed with fear as he watched his mother, sister, and two beautiful nieces board the cattle wagons. The door slammed shut on them and the lines of people continued to move forward onto the next wagon. Somehow he won a ticket to live that day and knew he should get out of there fast. But just ahead of him, he saw Rosa - the beautiful, kind, selfless girl from his building. Isaac realized he must act no matter what the cost. He mustered up all the confidence left in him and told the officer, “that’s my sister. I want to be with her.” The Nazi approached Rosa and asked if Isaac was her brother. The Nazis did not like the Jews, so they planned to take them away. They had both wanted freedom from the German Nazi, taking over Denmark. Kristina, a young 11 year girl and Pavel, a young adult were going to be put into a Ghetto with other Jewish citizens. Fortunately they both escaped. Kristina and her family had managed to escaped before the Nazi got them and had escaped to the sewer. Her family had planned to stay there until the War was over. Fortunately, 20 other survivors had come with them. They stayed there for 14 months with little civilization. By the time the War was done, 9 had died from living in the sewer and 11 survived. Pavel had stayed close to the Ghetto in a neighborhood instead, he planned to stay there until the War was over ,too. Eventually he had been caught and was put in a camp, where they worked him to the bone. Kristina and Pavel both want freedom and they both want to escape.
