The person in the Annex stealing bread was Mr. Van Daan claiming he was hungry. The man in the storeroom requests extra money because he knows that there is a door behind the bookcase and the people in the Annex don’t want the green police come and get them so the pay off the workman.
Mrs. Van Daan reacts so strongly to selling the fur coat because it reminds her of the good days when her family had money and jews were free to live among Aryans peacefully and in harmony. Also she reacts strongly because her father gave it to her. As shown in the quote,”my father gave me that, you did not give it to me!”
The highest point of tension in the play is when the green police are pounding on the door to the Annex and the people the Annex are holding
She fears for the lives of her children and worries that harm will come to them. This also represents an aspect of the parent-child relationship. No matter how old children get, their parents still worry about the things they do and the choices they

The consequences, regret, and grievance caused by Hans giving bread to the Jewish man, in Markus Zusak’s novel The Book Thief, were not worth the minimal benefits that came from his actions. The worst consequence was that the old, frail Jewish man and Hans were both whipped severely. The starving Jew didn’t even get the bread, nor did Hans get the bread back meaning that it just went to waste. Another repercussion of Hans giving the bread was that he caused Rosa and Liesel grievance, when both he and Max had to leave. All of these terrible consequences affected not only Hans but also affected Hans’ whole family and the Jewish man, too.
“It had been months since I laid eyes on Mom, and when she looked up I was overcome with panic that she’d see me and call out my name, and that someone on the way to the same party would spot us together and Mom would introduce herself and my secret would be out.” (Walls 3)
The minister then questions her but after his unsuccessful attempt, Mother’s actions become a scandal throughout the town because “any deviation from the ordinary course of life in this quiet town was enough to stop all progress in it” (C670). This does not bother Mother and she successfully continues with her plans. By overcoming this alienation both characters achieve feminine empowerment.
As H. Jackson Brown Jr. said, “You can not change the direction of the wind, but you can adjust the sails”. This quote and your novel I feel truly fit together like a puzzle piece. Recently completing your book, Elsewhere, has made me notice the importance of making the most of life and that when it seems hard, it’s just part of growing up. Especially with both characters Owen and Elizabeth, you see a true difference in their personality from beginning to end. Even though on the outside the characters are getting younger, internally they are maturing and learning to move on. I could really relate to these characters as they struggle through their life in Elsewhere, by completing their goals that I can relate to in my own life on Earth. Letting
Dead: no longer alive. If you're reading this you probably are not dead, but Elizabeth Marie Hall is and had no clue at first. Elsewhere is a very strange book written by Gabrielle Zevin. It is kind of confusing, but makes you want to keep reading. This book makes you wonder what’s going to happen next.
Lastly, her family betrayed her by not listening to her side of the story after her sister told lies about her, and they betrayed her when they acted as if they did not care if she moved out of the house. In all of these actions, the family itself and certain members of the family are portrayed as uncaring, unsupportive, disrespectful, conniving, deceitful, and hateful to Sister. Through every action of the family, Sister is treated harshly, and she tries to not let this bother her. Yet, anger and bitterness build up inside of her until she cannot take it anymore. Consequently, it built up so much inside of her that it severely affected Sister so profoundly that she moved away from her home to get away from her family.
The strongest incident which made me feel angry is the fact that the mom more self-centered and compassionate about her rather than providing sufficient care and nutrition for her children. Typically, a mother takes care of her children by sacrificing her comfort and dreams. As a mother, her basic responsibility is to provide three basic things, the food shelter and protection. However, In the case of Mrs. Walls, she failed to provide all these three to her kids. She spends money on her self-care and desires leaving her children to starve. For example, in the Welch section of the book, its states that Jeannette’s Mother hides a chocolate bar from her children and plans to enjoys it all by herself. Later her children discover some of the chocolate bar, realizing that the mother didn’t offer any.
Why did Papa Hubermann buy a copy of 'Mein Kampf'? To pretend that he follow Hitler and the Nazi Party. Why did Liesel avoid the mayor's house for some time but then change radically and look forward to delivering the laundry
Everyone was going crazy over the food. The person who was selfish enough to eat behind the Franks and his own family, the Van Daans. Mr. Van Daan sneaked out to eat some bread in the cellar. Everyone was assuming it was rats, but Mrs. Frank went to go check it out anyway. What she saw when she walked down changed everything. When Mrs. Frank saw Mr. Van Daan stealing the bread, she immediately wanted the Van Daans gone. Mr. Van Daan's was selfish enough to take away the food that was going to Peter. Mr. Frank says that has heard Peter moan at night, because he is so hungry. Mrs. Frank says that they could stay until Miep found them a place. The wire tore these families apart.
It was a thank you gift for her hospitality. The power of words is that it can bring people young or old together. The other main theme of The Book Thief was the kindness and cruelty of humans. The cruelty was shown by Hitler’s discrimination of Jews and the kindness was shown by Hans giving bread to the Jews.
She used F.A.O. Schwarz, a very expensive toy store, to teach them a lesson and inspire them to strive for success and attempt to better themselves and their situations. The extreme differences between the children 's neighborhood and the neighborhood of the toy store are first illustrated by the fact that the white people on Fifth Avenue wear furs and stockings even on a hot summer 's day. “Then we check out that we on Fifth Avenue and everybody dressed up in stockings. One lady in a fur coat, hot as it is”(Bambara 99). The children are thrown off balance in this neighborhood, as if it were a foreign country where even the approach to temperature is different.
“When a Jew shows up at your place of residence in the early hours of the morning, in the very birthplace of Nazismn, you’re likely to experience extreme levels of Discomfort, Anxiety, Disbelief and Paranoia.”, The propaganda of Hitler was the most important aspect in the The Book Thief because it often set the mood that I was feeling and that feeling was sick and cringing while reading the Novel. Before the war, The Nazi’s passed laws to effectively get rid of the Jews Human Rights and basically stripping and restricting them from being “human”. Max, The “Jewish Fist Fighter”, was a victim of the Propaganda and his presence served and reminded me the vast superiority that the German’s had against the Jews during the Holocaust. This made me think so negatively on the Propaganda that was set against the Jews and completely disagreeing with the way Hitler was seeing things because of the fact that for Max to be, “lucky”, lucky meant that his home was the Hubermann’s freezing basement
reluctance to admit her father’s death. When he dies, she refuses to let anyone remove his body from their house. It’s as if she feels she needs his comforting and protection.
