Name: Michael Gerhart Many anti-gun activists are trying to ban assault weapons. The guns that the government wants to ban are not in the “assault weapon” category at all however. According to ****, “True assault weapons will only fire if the trigger is squeezed, and it will automatically fire until the ammo supply is depleted. True assault weapons are under a heavy ban since 1934 and are not included in the legislation banning “assault weapons.”(Caswell) Real assault weapons, like the ones that Caswell explained, are under a very strict ban. They are only allowed for military purposes. “The bill bans weapons with more evil names for example, the Uzi, TEC-9, and the Kalashnikov.”(Caswell) Apparently, the government and the media feel …show more content…
If anything the gun would be enough to scare the crooks away. “The semiautomatic "assault weapons" that the president banned fire only one round per trigger pull, which is quite different from the "weapons of war" that the president talked about”.(Roberts) That 's why these types of guns are fitting for protecting one’s family. Irrelevant to crime These types of guns are irrelevant to crime because they do not make sense to use. “Studies show that criminals pick lighter weapons such as pistols and handguns.”(Roberts) Semi-automatic and automatic weapons are heavier, bulkier and not easy to conceal during a crime. Semi-automatic rifles are only being banned because of their attachments like bayonets, light, lasers and other things. When was the last drive-by bayoneting? Another good example of why these guns are irrelevant to crime is that it is hard for someone with a criminal record to get a hold of any type of gun to begin with so it makes it even harder for them to get the more dangerous guns. During the Sandy Hook School shooting the gun that was used was a Bushmaster xm15. The anti-gun activists think the Bushmaster is an assault rifle, but in reality, the gun is a semi-automatic which means it fires one bullet at a time like a pistol. Ban is ineffective In
There are many views about gun control especially about assault weapons. People are both for it and against it. The people who are for the ban believes the weapons can only be used for violence. They don’t want to recognize that people against the ban have several different reasons to own their guns. These reasons can vary; some people just want protection; others want to use their guns for sport. This pleasurable pastime will also provide a variety of food to supplement family grocery supplies and to help people save on food costs. Instead of making more gun control laws the ones we have should be enforced.
The issue of banning assault weapons and large capacity magazines has been debated for years, but has never been discussed with such urgency as it is now. The issue is the banning of assault weapons in our society. Are we the kind of country that allows and encourages its citizens to own weapons of mass destruction? The moral issue we face is banning ownership of these weapons to ordinary citizens while protecting their rights under the second amendment of our Constitution. Considering the bloodshed and death that assault weapons cause in the hands of citizens and criminals, it seems to me that assault weapons do not have a place in our homes and society.
Did you know you are 4 times more likely to be killed with a knife or other cutting instrument than you are by a rifle or a shotgun? Gun rights and gun control are always hot items during any political discussion, whether it is between peers or politicians. One of the many great advantages to being an American is the ability to choose for one's own self what to believe in. Another advantage, in my opinion, is the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Laws should not restrict gun rights because first, it would infringe the second amendment, second, guns are a part of our culture, and finally, if guns were outlawed, citizens of the U.S. would become vulnerable.
Assault style or automatic weapons have been a common denominator in almost all fatal mass shootings. It is unnecessary for civilians to purchase automatic weapons for non-military use. If there was a ban on the purchasing of militarized weapons by civilians, it would decrease the number of fatal mass shootings drastically.
Assault weapons are the newest and the most popular type of firearm. When most people hear the term ‘assault weapon’, they think of an unnecessary weapon and their connections to mass shootings. That type of thinking is necessary when it comes to these types of weapons, and too many those disagree with people who think this way. There arguments are, “This is America,” and “It’s guaranteed in the second amendment,” but the issue is assault weapons have no place in American society outside the military and police use. The Second Amendment states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” This sentence written by our forefathers says nothing about which weapons are allowed in this country. So it is up to our government to decide which guns are legal and which guns are illegal. From a logical and educated perspective all assault weapons should be banned from public distribution and possession, and be restricted to use by our police and armed forces. This can easily be proven by why the 1994 gun ban was not successful, assault weapon capabilities in the hands of citizens, and solutions to assault weapon control.
The common argument that the anti gun movement push is that high caliber weapons mainly so called ¨assault rifles¨ cause mass destruction and that they kill thousands of people a year. They also claim that there is no use for the weapons and they wish to impose a nationwide ban on ¨assault rifles¨. Now to the average American the term ¨assault rifle¨ may sound intimidating but anti gun politicians use this term to scare Americans into thinking that a regular semi automatic rifle is an fully automatic machine which it is not. The most common rifle that the movement goes after is the ar-15 which is a semi automatic rifle. Now according to FBI crime statistics rifles accounted for 285 of murders in 2013,
In an article written by Charles Blow he states, “[in my youth,] a rifle wasn 't a weapon as much as a tool. People hunted…And they were a guard against intruders -though those intruders were more an idea than a reality in those parts - who might threaten life of property” (Blow). According to Blow, when he was a child, guns weren 't such a big threat to kill humans as they are today, although many citizens owned them back then. Throughout the last few decades the only thing that has changed are the weapons that are available and the society in which all kinds of people who, for some reason, decide to hurt others. The gun industry has produced more powerful weapons and not all are specifically for hunting. Many of those guns end up in the hands of children, mentally unstable people and others who just want to cause harm. Blow states, “And there wasn 't the fetish for military-style weapons and armor-piercing bullets” (Blow). In today 's world, one can go out and purchase a .50 caliber Barrett rifle. It 's one of the most powerful weapon a civilian can purchase. It 's not legal to hunt with these rifles, so why are they made available to the public? It does not make sense that such a powerful weapon is available to the public. These military style weapons should be banned because they often turn murder into mass murder. The only
Every time there is a mass shooting, the government proposes new rules, but they never put them in place because of the National Rifle Association (NRA) is influencing the government, therefore, Congress has not been able to renew or place a ban on assault weapons.
Mass shootings are a controversial subject because many do not want to rush into gun control because they could because anxious from any recent mass shootings. Supporters of gun control believe that taking away “assault weapons” would solve this but that word was made up in the wake of these shootings . “Assault Weapons” are made up assault rifles are standard practice for the military as they are fully automatic and have big capacity magazines and are made specifically to do major damage. The “Assault Weapons” many supporters want to ban are known as semi-automatic rifles and have been around since the early days of the war with vietnam. In fact the AR-15 the most popular rifle in America and it was originally developed 60 years ago as defensive weapon and the company that developed it sold the rights to Colt to make fully automatic versions for the military called the M16 but also sold
There is almost nothing that absolutely requires one to own an assault weapon as opposed to a less destructive firearm, such as a handgun, as assault weapons tend to be bulky, quite noticeable, and not necessarily accurate. Lastly, opponents of gun control laws argue that an assault weapon ban would spawn an aggressive blackmarket for [assault] weapons, allowing the guns to fall into the hands of criminals and the mentally unstable, as there would be no background checks or regulations whatsoever. Though this is a plausible effect, with an assault weapons ban there would be less guns readily available to circulate this said “blackmarket”.
Despite the appearance characteristics, fear of military-style assault weapons is no more lethal than hundreds of legal firearms. First, the definition of an assault weapon is not different under the national ban anyone knows what an assault weapon and a gun usually are. (ANR) Give the name of assault weapon is similar to giving red vehicles with speedometers that go beyond a hundred miles per hour the car name death because these are said to be favored vehicles of drunk and reckless drivers. Assault weapons are or were surprisingly attributed to less than one quarter of one percent of violent crimes in New Jersey. A police officer has a better chance of encountering a wild bear local zoo to face an assault weapon. But the liberal media makes this a priority, ignoring the
There are numerous types of firearms that are available for people to purchase. But, many in the government are trying to pass the assault weapons ban in the United States. An assault weapon is a semi-automatic firearm with a large capacity magazine. It is considered a military rifle and can cause severe damage. According to Phelan IV, “In December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children between six and seven years old, as well as six adult staff members with an assault weapon (Phelan IV).” This brought varying opinions on whether an assault weapons should be banned at the federal level. Opponents say assault weapons should not be banned because of the second amendment and because gun control efforts have proved to be ineffective; however, these weapons should be banned in the U.S., as it is rarely used in self-defense and it can build a safer society.
As far as overall gun violence is concerned, according to the FBI's 1998 Uniform Crime Reports, the overall violent crime rate in the US decreased about 7%. Robbery alone declined by 11%, the lowest since 1969. In addition, murder dropped by 7%, the lowest since 1967. More significantly, despite the fact the number of firearms and handguns owned by individual Americans continued to increase from 1997-1998, the FBI also reported the rate of firearms used to commit murder and robberies decreased in 1998. (1998 Uniform Crime Reports). These facts conclusively prove that firearms owned by peaceable citizens do not lead to increased murder or violent crime rates. In fact, they demonstrate that armed citizens lead to reduced rates of violent crime. When the gun is in the hands of a well-rounded person, it is no more of a weapon than your every day curling iron.
The United States of America is a nation of massacres by military-type assault weapons. Aware of the deadliness of these weapons and due to public safety concerns clearly outweighing the benefits of personal ownership of military-type assault weapons, the United States passed the 1994 Federal Ban on military-type assault weapons. This ban was notably effective during the 10 years it was in effect. However, the Ban automatically expired in 2004. Since that time, the number of U. S. mass murders has markedly increased. Attempts to reinstate the Ban, most recently the stricter 2013 Ban, have all failed. Nevertheless, the less restrictive 1994 Ban did pass the Senate and House of Representatives at one point and was successful. Therefore, the 1994 Federal Ban on military-type assault weapons should be reinstated.
It has not deterred them so far, so it is safe to assume that they would continue like always if no one had them. But this would make it easier for law enforcement as well. Now, they know that if anyone is carrying a gun, they are breaking the law, and can act appropriately to see justice is served, preferably by arresting the offender.
