The speaker did a very good job with his speech. His speech I believe is more informative, because he is describing his recent experience with appendicitis. The area that I liked most about his speech was his introduction. He had a very good hooked that got a lot of people’s attention including my own. He scared me for a moment, because he made everybody believe that he was going to show everybody his appendix that he just had removed from his body. Instead he showed the appendix of a book. Also, as he presented his speech he expressed what happened to him with very personal information. This information helped him establish his credibility. He presented his speech very well and sounded very confident. However, there were a few brief pauses
I chose to read this part from The New Kids by Brooke Hauser since it was quite an impactful part. The larger plot of this book was not focused on simply one main character, but a large array of them. Rather than the students' lives as a whole, it was often of the current events, and the reflections on the events leading up to now. For the most part, this book was on the current lives of the students and what they've gone through to reach their current status in life. This selection fits into the larger plot by being a prime example of what the students of International High School at Prospect Heights may go through to leave for the possibility of a new life or better chances. This particular part gave a look at how desperate many are to leave
I can tell you the authors style in the book In November by Cynthia Rylant. The style in her writings are mostly personification or figurative language. I know this because on page 4 it says "spreading there arms like dancers" based on what I read Cynthia Rylant uses personification also uses a simile. The book In November Cynthia uses tree limbs as dancers. She give a descriptive look as what the tree looks like. Cynthia Rylant uses a human action to a non human thing.
When we are still children, running around the playground with our friends, our goals in life and what we want to be when we grow up are much different than later in life. We want to me mermaids, princesses, astronauts. When we get older though our values change. Instead of going after what our heart really wants to do, we go after the jobs that offer the biggest paycheck. Our culture’s minds have been warped and bent towards the desire to have a bigger house, a cooler car, and fancier clothes. We put what we think is right in our minds over what we truly love to do deep down in our hearts. The novel Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom, is about a sociology professor, Morrie Schwartz, who has been given his death sentence. He reconnects with his former student and current sports journalist, Mitch Albom, to try to remold his mind like soft clay to resist the pull of money and fame that today’s society provides. In this story, the author uses descriptive language, figurative language, and repetition for effect, to capture the theme that money will never
In “La Bamba” by Gary Soto, the symbols in the text point to the theme which is that worrying can cause things to not go as planned but things can take a turn for the better. One of the symbols in this text is how people view Manuel. This is a symbol because throughout the story Manuel constantly worries about how people view him and what people think of him. In the story Manuel worried about not messing up and making sure everything went as planned because he wants to impress people and make people think he is cool. When people used words such as “funny,” “crazy,” and “hilarious” to describe his performance and when people enjoyed it everything took a turn for the better. Even though Manuel thought his performance was bad at first but when other people told him that they liked his performance, he liked it too.
Many different forms of figurative language I used throughout the story to exhilarate the irony. The opening description of Ethan is full of ironic expressions. Figurative language is also used to the describe reactions to events in the story. The author is very descriptive in this short story. The use of figurative language aids in description of events, the setting, mood, and characters’ appearance and response. Edith Wharton, the author, use of literary devices allows the story to come alive and to also require the reader to think deeply about the true meanings.
In the road there is a lot of symbolism and figurative language used by cormac mccarthy. In the road there is a very subtle use of fire in equality to hope and freedom. They fire is warm, it is an escape from the cruelty of the cold world that the father and the boy. When it rains, the boy and the father builds a fire. Like in the book, the fire that they build, the father calls the fire “gods own firedrake”. You could portray this as an example of the sun. But since the father and the son cannot see the sun, the fire is their only source of heat, heat to them is goodness. “He dozed in the wonderful warmth. The boy's shadow crossed over him. Carrying an armload of wood. He watched him stoke the flames. God's own firedrake. The sparks rushed upward and died in the starless dark. Not all dying words are true and this blessing is no less real for being shorn of its ground” (Cormac McCarthy, The Road). In the novel, the boy constantly asks if they (the boy and the father) were the good guys. The father replies by saying “yes
In the short story "The Ascent", the author, Ron Rash, uses figurative language throughout the story that urges the reader to believe that the the whole story revolves around a theme of being unlucky. First, Ron Rash has added the simile, “A woman was in the passenger seat, her body bent forward like a horseshoe” (Rash 280). For centuries, horseshoes have been associated with luck when they are upright. However when horseshoes are bent over that is associated with luck running out. In the story, the fifth grade protagonist, Jared, is wandering in the woods and stumbles upon an airplane that crashed a week before. When Jared walks in, he sees the dead woman, bent over like a horseshoe, which represents her luck running out. Considering
Within each individual there is good and an evil with no fine line of division. Each is shown and cannot be inhibited. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses figurative language to represent his allegory within the story itself. Using many types of figurative language, good and an evil is represented as the basis of the story that an individual reverts back to their true evilness with themselves in dire situations. Both Jack and Ralph represent this as they go through their time on the island attempting to work together as a cohesive unit.

Imagine living in a world where you are immediately judges bases on the way your skin looked . Where people with a certain color of flesh aren't allowed to have the same luxurys as the others. This is exactly what Martin Luther KIng Jr. was fighting against, in the speech “I Have a Dream.” his purpose in writing is to persuade us that equality for African Americans can be found if we learn to accept what has been put on this earth. When we do that freedom will find every person and so will happiness. They can only find this if they avoid violence and use love instead of hate to gain the freedom that they deserve. Because if they use violence, this will only make the problem worse. Also, he said that he wanted them to fight for their freedom in a non-

I chose the second exercise on page 85 that require to complete the sentences creating vivid figurative expressions. The figurative language is bread for my teeth --Italian equivalent of to meet one's match. The use of metaphors and symbolisms belongs to my writing style,as well as hyperboles. During the exercise I found somewhat difficult to find suitable expression because of my still limited vocabulary --indeed, master a new language is not something that happens overnight. Although some difficulties, the exercise was a valuable source of learning new vocabulary and idioms, moreover, It sparked my creativity. Nonetheless, exploring another approach to writing, starting with language to develop an idea, has been interesting. I felt somewhat
My poem is about my love for the winter season. It is one of my favorite seasons because I always grew up with the cold and snow. It also meant Christmas and family and everything that comes along with the winter season. In my poem, I used personification, metaphor, and similes. My first example of figurative language, personification, can be seen in my poem when I say, “The smells tickle my nose unlike anyone knows.”
I must admit that when I originally heard the topic of the speaker's speech, I was not very responsive to it. But, when the speaker began his presentation, he clearly established the intent of his presentation and his speech became quite intriguing. The speaker had knowledge and understanding about his topic. In addition, the speaker was able to articulate a well organized speech; therefore, it was easy to follow and I completely understood it. \
