Journal 3 What is the tone of this video? What is the purpose? Who is the audience? Did you like the video, or not? Why?
The tone of the video is very serious. The purpose is for us to stop complaining. It is for us to understand people actually go through worse times such as having a boulder on top of one of your hand and then amputating that hand four days later to escape death. The person responds to the event with it could have been worse. The speaker made us realize life is about fighting and our muscles were created to lift us up of things that weigh us down. We are all still alive with every heartbeat therefore we should "act like it" as he put it meaning to stop complaining, keep fighting daily obstacles with what we
In May of 1998, Kipland Kinkel brought a gun to his school. Over the course of two days this escalated from: being sent home, to murdering his father and mother, to murdering 2 students and wounding 26, earning a lifetime sentence of 111 years and 8 months in prison. In the court case being examined, the presiding judge addresses the original case, defendants ground for appeal, and the justification for the State’s decision to deny the appeal. Judge Haselton effectively uses ethos, logos, and pathos to support the Higher Court’s decision to deny the appeal because the original sentence was constitutional and just.
Starting this year, I thought English 102 was just going to be another general education requirement I needed to have in order to graduate. English has never been my favorite subject, so I guess it is safe to say that I was not super excited about this class. However, this class turned out to be different then I thought. It turned out to be more useful then I originally thought. English 102 was both helpful and fairly simple because of what what I learned, the effort I put in and how prepared I was.
The primary election for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is to be held Thursday, September 3, 2015. This momentous occasion happens every four years. The elected chief and officials, such as council members, can run for office for as long as they see fit, for there is no term limit. Our past chief, Michell Hicks, was in office three consecutive terms for a total of twelve years. This year Hicks has decided to step down and the new candidates for chief are Patrick Lambert and Gene “Tunney” Crowe. These new candidates must be able to fill the role of a generous and successful leader to those of the Cherokee nation. The platforms of both Lambert and Crowe are used to persuade the public to vote in their favor and are extremely versed in the
For my third writing project, I have decided to create a research proposal, directed at the USC Rossier School of Education in order to get them to accept my dissertation examining the gentrifying effects of neighborhood preference in charter school lottery systems. This proposal is effective because it employs rhetorical strategies appropriate for the target audience – in this case, a committee of professors that are knowledgeable about the subject of the proposed dissertation. These rhetorical strategies include the structure of the document, stylistic choices such as academic diction and tone, and the choices regarding the content of the proposal.
Larry Karson, of the University of Houston’s Department of criminal justice, wrote his article about how a Grand Jury gets put together in the state of Texas. He clearly explains the process of picking the members for the Grand and Petit Jury and compares these processes with each other. Like two of the other articles I have mentioned, this article also explains the historical background and how Grand juries first started. It goes into depth of how racial discrimination in the Texas juries plays a roll with the proper functioning of the juries and how this problem can be averted.
In the past, I have done many research papers for science, history, and English classes. For my AP English classes, I learned how to identify rhetoric and analyze how it affects a piece of writing as a whole. In chemistry and biology classes, I researched a certain chemical reaction and wrote a paper on why that happens. In AP US History class I spent hours on learning how to write a grey area thesis and finding evidence to support both sides of an argument. A strength I have as a writer is that I have experience in doing research in most fields of study. I took various AP classes in high school and have written papers in most of them. A weakness that I have as a writer is the inability to use concise and precise diction. I feel as though I
Lynn Everson’s (2014) presentation on prostitution and drug use within Spokane, was inspirational, and emphasized that all human beings are worthy of a healthy lifestyle, and deserve to be treated with care and respect. Everson works for the Needle Exchange program through Spokane Regional Healthy, and despite harsh criticism of the program she continues to be a strong ally, and advocate for the prostitutes and illegal drug users of Spokane. She has successfully connected to this population by providing unconditional support to those in need, and handing out free condoms and clean needles. Everson’s ultimate goal is to keep individuals healthy, and lower the risk of HIV and AIDS. The universal message is that individuals who are involved in prostitution and drug use, are human beings, and have the right to be safe in their daily lives, despite many individuals not believing this is a population that is worthy of rights.
Imagine the look on a veteran’s face as he notices players kneel in disrespect at the sound of the national anthem. Many fans and veterans were disappointed to see Colin Kaepernick, a quarterback in the NFL, refuse to stand while the national anthem was being played. Kaepernick’s actions insulted fans and hurt the sport. When America had no role in creating the racist tragedies, yet it is being disrespected for the incidents. The national anthem protests have not benefited democracy.
English classes are very important if you want to pursuit your academic goal, and there are a lot of things that I learned about academic writing in this semester. At first, I thought that it was going to be easy as long as I kept doing my brief assignments on time and showing up in classes. However, I was wrong, English is hard, especially if you are an international student because the methods of writing an essay are different. Though, I decided to take English 1301 because I wanted to be able to write something that would make it easier for a reader to understand, and of course to make me get good grades in other classes assignments. Also, because I didn’t know the difference between writing a rhetorical analysis essay and writing a normal
Since before the moon launch, America has been infatuated with winning at any cost. This competitive nature translates from war rooms to athletic fields to the top of corporate ladders. If this is truly our nation’s identity, then why have we not constructed a space elevator? A space elevator is one of the more extravagant ideas from sci-fi and now is being thought of by the capitol of our beloved country. The US must take the initiative and build a space elevator, allowing travel into space at a cheaper price, act as a symbol of greatness for our country, and carry payloads of 11,193kg at once (allowing eight climbers to be sent up by the tether (Chang 2011)) [cumulative sentence]. The thought that an elevator could, or even should, stretch from the Earth into space, allowing people to ride a capsule into orbit baffles many, yet there are
Point of Impact Would you ever agree to consensual violence? Let me rephrase this; Would you agree to slap a stranger? I would. Apparently, forty people in “The Slap”, a video on YouTube by Max Landis, agreed to be slapped by a stranger. Absolutely no one was pressured, and everyone was hit as hard as they wanted to be hit.
In the video “Paper Tigers” that stood out to me was the authentic tears and emotions by the students. For example, describing being sexual assaulted. The student had such a sense of sadness and hurt that I have seen in many of the young ladies that I come into contact with. Also, the statements, “they cared about me as an individual”, “These are good people why wouldn’t I listen to them”, “building relationships first” and, “The behavior might be out their control”.
The video is about walking and donating money to an organization that helps with the lupus disorder. I feel really deeply about this topic because I was diagnosed with lupus a few years ago, and so was my mother. Being diagnosed with the condition has altered my life in many ways from hair loss to scars on my skin. Therefore I can understand there being a need to raise money for those who may be suffering from the condition.
First of all the music which is used in the video is pathos because it gives enthusiasm and sends hope to the one who is watching and it is suitable for the purpose of the video, there is hypophora in this video when it asks why the workers skip meals and often have to go without medical treatment and then it answers the question "Why?" with "because trade isn't working" to convince us with the Fairtrade that the workers with the current trade are powerless and sinking in poverty that when they use the Fairtrade there life will be improved, there is another rhetorical device which is imagery when the video compares the water(sea) to poverty and workers are sinking in it to show the bad life the workers live and to make us feel guilty and responsible
The video is very well produced and directed. When the mood is intense the scenery and music lines up with the intense mood. When the mood is gloomy and depressing the music and the transition effects added to the video add tons of emotional feedback from their audience. When Amber was talking to women about being sold for sex, many would begin crying thinking about the terrible history and things they had to go through. During times like these the camera would zoom in on the faces of these women and give the audience a perfect view of the pain and agony on the faces of these women. The majority of the video is gloomy and sad. Many times during the viewing of this film I got chills thinking about the horrendous things these women and children experienced. The video has had 269,759 view on YouTube alone.
