As a researcher, the APA style helps to build credibility. By properly citing research references and displaying an understanding of the development of ideas, a researcher gives credit to original owner of intellectual property. This is not only the ethical thing to do, it documents the development of ideas. By using proper APA guidelines for in-text citations, referenced materials are acknowledged immediately. The full reference citations at the end of the article or paper allow the reader to easily find the referenced resources and understand the author’s ideas in the context of the current knowledge within the field (Hicks, 2006). This ability of readers to follow the development of an idea, or to refer back to an original concept, is essential in an academic setting. The inception of APA emerged in 1929 when psychologists and business managers met with the vehement resolve to establish rules or guidelines for scientific writing. The people in the meeting incorporated rules ranging from punctuations, abbreviations, statistics, in-text citations, and references. American Psychological Association (APA) writing style exists for a reason and this reason is because writers' must give “credibility where credibility is due”(Walden Writing Center, 2015) . During my BSW program I learned this and also, the importance of integrity in college level writing. In my opinion, two aspects of APA that I think will not challenge me are direct quotations and listing references. I have to admit I prefer to quote intellecutual matter directly rather than, use paraphazing. I believe this is approriate to do if the quote you utilize is short and all of your agrguments regarding, the content of the quote, are your own ideas. Another thing that will come easily to me is listing my references. This comes easily to me because during my undergraduate education, I excelled in this area. The reason for this is because everytime I wrote a reference page I always refered to my courses APA manual.
The writing assignments introduced me to APA, so this will come in handy with any other classes I take that involve using APA. Furthermore, we also went over ways to avoid maturation, history, experimenter bias etc. which will help me greatly if I have to write another research proposal. Lastly, I learned about some important studies in the Psychology field, which will help me with future Psychology classes I take.
