Apa Writing Purpose

This worksheet requires unpacking the key elements of a published scholarly journal article and demonstrating APA source citation skills, activities you will engage in frequently in the completion of a variety of assignments including essays, research papers and literature reviews in future courses.

The purpose of this paper is to provide you with written instructions on some of the basic guidelines with the new APA format (American Psychological Association, 2009). In addition, this paper is written in APA format to provide you with a visual image of how many aspects of papers should be written, from the title page, to headings, to references in text, and the reference page. This paper is not met to be a comprehensive explanation of APA format, but will provide the reader with the basics. So, please buy the manual and read it.

Your responses should follow the conventions of Standard American English (correct grammar, punctuation, etc.). Your writing should be well ordered, logical and unified, as well as original and insightful. Your work should display superior content, organization, style, and mechanics. The purpose of this assignment is to allow the learner to demonstrate writing skills, organizational skills, and ability to correctly present ideas and credit others in APA format when writing a professional paper.

The APA writing style is most commonly used to cite sources for psychology, education, and social sciences and is also the official writing style of the American Psychological Association. The General APA Organizational Guidelines are basic guidelines that explain how to write a research paper in the APA format. These guidelines ensure clear and consistent presentation of written material that differentiates from other writing styles because it concerns elements such as: Citations, punctuation, presentation of numbers, etc

Use the first sentence or sentences of the introduction to grab your reader’s attention and let them know what the main idea of your paper is. The introduction of the paper begins here in the first paragraph of your paper, on the line following the paper title. Indent the first sentence of each paragraph by pressing the tab key on your keyboard. Double-space throughout the paper, including the title page, abstract, body of the document, and References page. APA uses a traditional font style such as Times New Roman, and a 12 point font size.

The inception of APA emerged in 1929 when psychologists and business managers met with the vehement resolve to establish rules or guidelines for scientific writing. The people in the meeting incorporated rules ranging from punctuations, abbreviations, statistics, in-text citations, and references. These rules are significant, and safeguards against plagiarism rearing it’s ugly head. The acumen of those involved set a superior precedent, not merely an obiter dictum, in advanced communication skills. A precedent surely utilized by writers of the day, and a precedent for posterity.

American Psychological Association (APA) writing style exists for a reason and this reason is because writers' must give “credibility where credibility is due”(Walden Writing Center, 2015) . During my BSW program I learned this and also, the importance of integrity in college level writing. In my opinion, two aspects of APA that I think will not challenge me are direct quotations and listing references. I have to admit I prefer to quote intellecutual matter directly rather than, use paraphazing. I believe this is approriate to do if the quote you utilize is short and all of your agrguments regarding, the content of the quote, are your own ideas. Another thing that will come easily to me is listing my references. This comes easily to me because during my undergraduate education, I excelled in this area. The reason for this is because everytime I wrote a reference page I always refered to my courses APA manual.

The writing assignments introduced me to APA, so this will come in handy with any other classes I take that involve using APA. Furthermore, we also went over ways to avoid maturation, history, experimenter bias etc. which will help me greatly if I have to write another research proposal. Lastly, I learned about some important studies in the Psychology field, which will help me with future Psychology classes I take.

In addition to spacing, APA style includes a special way of citing resource articles. See the APA manual for specifics regarding in-text citations. The APA manual also discusses the desired tone of writing, grammar, punctuation, formatting for numbers, and a variety of other important topics. Although the APA style rules are used in this template, the purpose of the template is only to demonstrate spacing and the general parts of the paper.
