• Attitude to situation and interviewer Tom is a 46 years old male, 187cm tall and 73kg. He appeared to be very anxious with drops of sweat on his face and hands, which felt cold and clammy.
Tom displayed psychomotor agitation, as he has a slight hand tremor, which was noticeable when he drank his cup of tea.
Tom was unsettled and agitated in behaviour. He constantly looked around the room and narrowed his eyes when he looked into bright light. Furthermore, he appeared to have difficulty focusing on conversation.

• Congruency Tom reported his mood as “shocking” and he also stated that he is “feeling full in the head.”

Throughout the novel Tom is shown as someone very arrogant and abrupt in the way he talks to people and feels he has the authority to question others in an interrogatory manner. In his first meeting with Nick he
Tom never does anything without doing it to the fullest, good or bad. Tom has an overall extremely short temper, assertive,confident and aggressive nature. Tom’s wild, emotional, and uncaring attitude end up getting three people killed. Tom in the end is ultimately concerned with himself and his lavished ,intense, and high paced
He shows symptoms of lack of interest in relationships, seeming dull, prefers to be alone, creates a rich and luxurious world for himself, and is very self-confident, but he does not allow people to interfere with the way he functions. These symptoms point back to the Schizotypal personality disorder and his actions provide solid evidence for the diagnosis. Thomas’s actions in his workplace toward his boss and work group were intense and this diagnosis provides explains why he became so angry when they interfered with his normal work life. At school Thomas could not concentrate and used to constantly disturb the children and the teacher. He became quite disruptive in class and did not learn anything. His teacher then nicknamed him “Addled”. Addled means someone who is unable to think clearly.

Tom was still on the couch, the light from the television illuminating his pale, tear-stained face. He lay on his side, his body pulled into the fetal position with his hands tucked between his thighs and his lackluster eyes staring blankly at the flickering screen. He was the very picture of wretchedness; a lost soul whose life was a litany of physical pain and psychological suffering.
Helen has reported that she has mood swing and that she has suicidal ideation as well having feeling uncontrollable over her own body. She denies and audio or visual hallucinations. Helen is showing signs of bipolar disorder DSM 296.62.
This lack of fulfilment in his life is one of the first things we learn about Tom. It is probably this quality that makes him so careless with his actions,

Before the story is too far, there is already signs of Tom’s supercilious manner when Nick first meets up with him. Nick describes Tom like he “established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward…”(11). This is the first of many signs that show Tom’s supercilious manner and how he acts like he is better than anyone else. After a short time, Tom shows another sign of irreverence. Nick describes Tom’s treatment of others when he states, “After an infinitesimal hesitation, he included Daisy”(18).
3. Nick states that Tom is enormously wealthy, arrogant, aggressive, and gruff. He says that Tom was leading an anticlimactic life and was constantly in search of something exciting.
Before Nick arrives at the Buchannan estate, with his limited knowledge of Tom, he describes him as a man who has reached “such an acute limited excellence at twenty-one that everything afterward savors of anticlimax.” Tom is established early on as restless and bored, with the threat of aggression spurred by the fact that “Tom would drift on forever seeking.” Tom exhibits this manner when he started to show Nick his estate by “turning me [him] around by one arm, he [Tom] moved a broad flat hand along the front vista.” Tom’s aggressive actions explicate his arrogance and narcissist
Tom is very adventurous which can regularly lead to mischief. He tends to trick people for personal gain. Aside from being a troublemaker, he also enjoys reading books—especially adventure novels. Tom likes to recruit several of his friends to act as characters in his favorite adventure books. Tom can be extremely bossy when he is with a group of friends; he likes to be the leader of the group.
Tom knows how to face the danger ahead of him and not be afraid. There are many examples in the novel where Tom is able to face danger with a brave face and not escape his problems. One piece of evidence for this is that He asked Becky to bow out her candle and used his candle to conserve the wick. Another piece of evidence is that they also avoided starvation b sharing a bit of cake. These actions were all Tom’s idea. In the novel it says,
