Imagine yourself sitting in front of the tv watching the news and all of a sudden the breaking news cast interrupts the regular news. You hear that there has been a school shooting at the school your kids attend, and you automatically start frantically calling your kids to see if they’re ok. What if we could avoid this feeling of no hope and eliminate the fears some students have of going to school? Would you take action? Gun control has been a very controversial topic over the past few years due to the increase of police violence and school shootings. This increase of violence should be a clear indicator that gun control is needed in our country. If gun control was implicated in states all across the U.S., school shootings will be prevented, gun control will have finally been tested, and the people of America can finally have the safety they desire.
Parents all over the world want to feel safe letting their kids go to school to get a good education. In the past schools were not like the ones we attend today, campuses would be open and students were disciplined way more for bad behavior. Just recently “a former student fatally shot 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland on

If this was true wouldn’t school shootings and violent crimes in the U.S. not be happening? Data were gathered for all 170 U.S. cities with a 1980 population of at least 100,000. “These studies have failed to generate consistent evidence of a net positive effect of gun availability on violent crime rates”(Kleck 3). This data is a prime example of what officials are doing whenever the topic of gun control comes up. They collect data to see if a hypothesis is true but when the data is inconsistent they just give up and say it won’t work and forget about it. Stop officials from running away and get them to actually test gun control to see if it actually
The topic of gun control is a a very talked about and subjective topic and has many different opinions and various extremes. First off, gun control can mean anything from having background checks or waiting periods when buying guns to taking away guns completely. Most people agree that background checks are necessary to keep guns out of people with bad intentions hands because a gun itself is a very neutral object and can be used for any amount of good or bad as can any other object. However, it is much easier for a person with bad intent to hurt more people with a gun then say a stick or another neutral object. The danger of a weapon is completely up to the person in control of the weapon.
The amount of crimes happening today will only increase with stricter gun control laws because there is a higher temptation to steal guns. An American citizen claims, “Ever since I first learned how to shoot, the issue with gun violence around the nation became clear: Guns are not the problem; people are” (Sherfenski). Police need to lock up these people committing the disastrous crimes that affect so many innocent lives. These blameless people are not prepared when they are being attacked, and that is because most shootings tend to happen in areas where guns are controlled. The former United States Secretary of Education, William Bennett, explains the reason that criminals decide to go to places that have controlled gun laws is because: “These murderers, while deranged and deeply disturbed, are not dumb. They show up to schools, universities, malls and public places where their victims cannot shoot back” (Bennett). Even if guns are controlled in public places including malls and schools, where there are uncontrolled shootings, why would it make a difference if they were controlled everywhere? It would not make a difference whatsoever because these crimes are done out of pure, revolting pleasure. Committing a crime is one thing, but taking away a right that was given to Americans in the 1790s is a whole different story.
It is only April 16th in the year. Only about 16 weeks have passed, and there has already been more than a dozen school shootings. Innumerable of innocent children, fearing for their life and sadly, many of those kids were killed. Now think about it, it could be anyone. Any person could easily purchase a deadly gun, because the current gun control laws are inefficient. A change needs to happen now. Not only for the safety of students at schools, but for the safety of everyone in the United States. The current gun laws are extremely flawed, resulting in more gun violence and deaths, and these laws need to be reformed.
There have been 301 school shootings in the U.S. since 2013. After the recent Parkland shooting, taking the lives of 17 high school students, the awareness regarding how to prevent another event like this has risen the debate: should teachers should be able to carry guns at school. Media coverage of the debate of teachers carrying guns in school tended toward the use of extreme opinions combined with bias when discussing the issue.
What I do know is that increasing gun control alone will not effectively prevent acts of gun violence. According to crimeresearch.org, “every place that has been banned guns (either all guns or all handguns) has seen murder rates go up. You cannot point to one place where murder rates have fallen, whether it’s Chicago or D.C. or even island nations such as England, Jamaica, or Ireland.” Crimeresearch.org has collected and analyzed data from which they cannot correlate a decrease in murder rates to places that have gun prohibition. The only correlation they found to a decrease in murder rates was a significant increase in armed police in a given area, for an example of homicide rates before and after a ban, take the case of the handgun ban in England and Wales in January 1997… The immediate effect was about a 50 percent increase in homicide rates. Firearm homicide rate had almost doubled between 1996 and 2002. The homicide and firearm homicide rates only began falling when there was a large increase in the number of police officers during 2003 and 2004.” From this information not only is crimeresearch.org denouncing the effectiveness of banning public possession of guns but it is also implying that a different solution, a simple increase in armed police, effectively helped to lower firearm homicide rates. Thus, I believe at least part of the solution is to prevent gun violence is to increase armed police in areas where gun violence
As the debate over gun control continues to spread throughout the nation like the plague, everyone is trying to choose a side. Some argue that their Second Amendment Rights are being infringed on, however, when looked at in detail that is not the case. Many others argue the decrease of guns is not beneficial because criminals are okay with doing illegal things, therefore they will obtain guns anyway. There is much, however, to disprove that. These weapons are the reason why the United States has such a high rate of violence even with such high wealth. The cost of gun violence has continued to rise over the years in medical bills. Criminals should not have the access they are currently have to such destructive weapons. Gun control must be put in place in order to decrease much of the violence and suicides the United States has.
Although there are many ways that schools can assist students with mental illnesses, their hands are also tied. For the amount of concern many Americans and politicians show for the failing healthcare system, there is a lack of funding and a shortage of school counselors, allowing for school violence to continue. Schools are educational settings, not clinical settings, and so they do not have the authority to provide treatment services to students, as they are unable to obtain malpractice coverage, making them liable for any incidents that would occur. There is only so much a school can do for a student who has a serious mental illness such as:
As of November 2017, the new policy permitting staff members and teachers of the Kern High School District to carry firearms on school campuses is provoking a great deal of controversy among parents and teachers. Before the SB 707 act was taken into effect [a bill allowing officials exempting people authorized to carry firearms in school ] the operating policy was that the Kern High District was a School Gun Free Zone. This new policy taken in consideration allows anyone with a CCW permit to bring a firearm to school at any time whether it be a teacher or staff member. This issue allowing firearms onto a school campus is considered necessary to keep students safe or in no need at all. Teachers at foothill high also had a say toward the new gun policy being viewed. Hiistory
There has been many school shootings due to the wrong people owning and having the ability to carry a concealed weapon. Not only could guns get in to the wrong hands, but the amount of funding that goes into providing them for learning environments is very costly. There are many different varieties of safety measures that would be safer than having guns on hand for school teachers and staff members. Schools will not be as safe if we are to put guns on campuses.
A gun is a magnet to devastating consequences. The consequences can vary from injuries which result in expensive medical bills, to death. Without a doubt, guns do not provide safety. Reason is because having a gun increases the risk of injury or death, provokes massacres, and medical bills involving guns are plunging the government's funds. Therefore, various authors present facts and statistics about cases with gun violence revealing the high number of casualties and the amount the government is spending in treating patients with gun related injuries in order to invalidate the idea that guns are safe.
Although gun control laws are made to prevent violent outcomes, the influence which laws carry are the complete opposite to what one would think. Ever since the ratification of the Second Amendment, the debate on gun control has become a very heated topic. There is one side that believes that guns should be banned in order to stop any future tragedies from occurring. On the other hand, there is another side that believes guns are our cherished right to own and we should be allowed to use them freely. Even though many gun advocates believe that guns should be used in its continued free fashion, there are many tragic events occurring in the US almost everyday, that should lead to the scrutinization of guns.
Every parent sends their child to school expecting to that they will return in the afternoon as schools must provide an appropriate level of safety measures in order to keep the children safe while school is in session. Many school officials argue that the safest way to keep children safe is to raise awareness. The critical point of the argument is guns as gun control has been a brutal battle lately in the United States. At a local High school in Parkland, Florida, an incident involving an AR-15 rifle shook school ground as well as debate on whether the school could have prevented the attack. Many students attending this local high school spoke out against the tragedy proposing that the school could have prevented the shooting. This argument sparked conversations throughout the nation about whether the school should have raised awareness of guns and their consequences. Should our schools educate our kids about guns just as they educate us about school intrusions and fire drills? The schools throughout this nation are not responsible for raising gun awareness as this will only interest the children in gun even more.
Indeed, the United States has a long tradition of holding guns. The public opinion with guns is deeply based. A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2017 showed that 48% of the population grew up in armed families; 72% believed that most people should have the right to have
Bang! Bang! Bang! Panic is everywhere. Teachers frantically hide their students in cupboards, closets, and anything that will keep them out of sight. For outside the classroom there is a deranged man with a gun, looking to kill. This was the scene at Sandy Hook Elementary. If educators were armed, could this event have been prevented? Teachers should be able to carry a gun in the classroom in order to protect their students and staff.
The United States has an endless supply of morals and rights that are heavily debated and controversial. Near the top of that seemingly never ending list is gun control. The United States has had a history of issues with gun control and limiting what kind of firepower should be allowed to the general public. As of recently, the government has tried to further limit guns due to a few mass shootings and constant issues with firearms. But with the limitations, came protest from people believing that limiting the possible weapons allowed to the public denies the second amendment and contrasts with the idea of freedom in the United States. With this cause and effect debate, it has lead to heavy controversy whether or not freedoms should be sacrificed
