For the people who eat cheap food, do you ever think of the consequences that it has on your body? Cheap foods that contain high amounts of fats, sugars, and starches are harmful to the human body. All around the world, there is someone who struggles with obesity. Obesity is when someone is grossly fat or just overweight. Millions of people struggle with this disease and no one seems to know why. The obesity epidemic is caused by cheap food that Americans buy and eat. To begin with, inexpensive food such as fast food restaurants is the cause of obesity. According to Derek Noland in his article, he states that “research published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians suggests a decidedly different fundamental cause of the rise in obesity, sighting the overwhelming availability of cheap, unhealthy foods, as the main culprit.” Cheap food is easy and fast to get, which is what leads people to buy it. People can get hot and ready fast meals for low cost rather than getting healthy food for a much higher price. Jessica Firger in her article, “Is cheap food to blame for the obesity epidemic?,” claims that “the most recent research finds Americans now spend less than one-tenth of their money on food. A cheaper diet tends to add up to eating more -- and to less healthy eating.” Americans tend to spend less money on cheap food to get more food. When Americans spend a bunch of money on healthy food, they don’t get the most out of what they spend. People can have a full basket of
The American food industry, just think about what you eat for a minute, where do you think it comes from, how do you think it is made, what do you think it is made out of, how many ingredients are in it. Most people would not give it a second thought, mostly because they do not want to know what they are putting in their body. The fact is not if you eat one McDonald's cheeseburger you will die it is that you should at least know what you are putting in your body, then you can make your own choice if you still want to eat it.
In America almost two thirds of the nation is overweight. That is about 79.6 million people who are obese. Fast food is without a doubt the problem why these statistics are so high. According to Shannon Brownlee, a journalist for the Sacramento Bee “ It’s Portion Distortion That Makes America Fat” she mentions how fast food corporations are luring buyers into their offers . In another article by David Weintraub “The Battle Against Fast Food Begins in the Home” he focus more on self responsibility rather than fast food restaurants being convenient everywhere you go. In America, the obesity epidemic is caused by the lack of parent not taking full responsibility for their childrens health, as well as fast food industries distorting portion sizes in order to make more
America is known as the fattest country in the world. Is fast food the culprit? According to the article, "F as in Fat 2005," America's obesity rate in 2005 was a whopping 60%. Many people believe that this is due to the increasing popularity in fast food. It is much easier to go through a drive through and pick up a meal than making the food yourself. When eating out, people are more likely to eat more than when they cook. Meals at fast food and restaurants have become popular, in America the size of each meal is significantly bigger than any other country. According to Christina Sarlch, author of “Guess How Many Calories Are In A Typical Fast Food Meal” the amount of calories in a fast food meal is a gouging 1100 calories with a drink .The average number of calories needed for a person is 2000-2500 calories . Split between 3 meals that averages out to 666.67-833.33 calories a meal. Of course not many people follow that suggested calorie intake.
According to Wall Street Journal, “More than 33% of adults who earn less than $15,000 per year were obese, compared with 24.6% of those who earn at least $50,000 per year.” (Izzo 2011) Processed foods such as cheeseburger or French fries tend to be cheaper than buying healthier ingredients and making home cooked food. When people have lower incomes, they do suffer from food insecurity, which is an important connection between poverty and obesity. Two reasons can contribute to obesity: parents are working and are no longer at home with their children and therefore not able to cook balanced meals; and foods with high fat are cheaper than healthy foods.
When discussing the issue of obesity in America, it seems to be that there is plenty of blame to go around and most of that blame falls on fast food companies. When searching for a concrete answer to the question used as my title, you will find none because there isn’t one. When asked this simple question, it is easy to blame the obesity problem on fast food considering 8 out of 10 Americans consume fast food according to a report done by the Huffington Post. But after doing more research you will notice that this isn’t necessarily the case. American obesity can be blamed on a variety of things; lifestyle, accessibility of fast food, and what we are taught about food growing up. However, when the only options you are provided with by the food industry are all unhealthy, obesity cannot be avoided.
America has the most Obesity health issue in the world 100 million American are either over weight or obese, but blaming fast food is completely wrong because every individual is responsible for his or her own actions taken. Fast food doesn’t beg people to come in and become over weight instead we choose to eat fast food when we have a desire. Although fast food do advertising, have a playground and giveaways like toys attracting kids to come buy a meal
We are all guilty of spending five dollars a meal from McDonalds or Burger King instead of taking a little time the day before and making our self our own meal, but let’s keep in mind that just because is made home doesn’t mean is healthy. According to the article “The state of obesity” by better policies of America more than one third of adults (34.9) are obese in the United States. But why is there so much obesity in the United States and who is there to blame? We can go ahead and blame the fast food restaurants or we can blame the people itself. Individuals are the ones to blame for the obesity in the United States because they have this idea of eating fast and easy, but just cause is fast does not mean healthy. Fast food are part of our daily life but is does not forces us to eat it.
We are all guilty, we rather spend five dollars on a McDonalds or Burger King meal, instead of taking a little time the day before and making our self our own meal, but let’s keep on mind that just because is made home doesn’t mean is healthy. According to article “The state of obesity” by better policies of America more than one third of adults (34.9) are obese in the United States. But why is there so much obesity on the United States and who is there to blame? We can go ahead and blame the fast food restaurants or we can blame the people itself. In my opinion the individuals are the ones to blame for the obesity in the United States because they rather have fast and easy food even though it’s not healthy, individuals rather have cheaper meal, and because they don’t exercise enough to burn the calories they consume throughout the day.
Obesity has always been around, however what could be the main source as to why apparently many people are overweight? Fast food could be the answer. As fast food is created by the media and advertisements to be something delicious, irresistible, and affordable, making people feel a need to invest their money to these types of food. When people fall into these advertisements they do not notice all the ingredients put in these foods that affect your health. They see only what the media wants to portray the food they are sponsoring. The availability of restaurants is also a key factor that plays in part due that it creates effortless access and is available with urgency. Factors such as advertising, no background of the ingredients contained, and convenience cause fast food to be a significant reason as to why people are obese.
In addition to the many different causes of obesity, fast food receives much of the blame.
A consumer might think they are saving themselves some money but in reality they are increasing their chances of obesity if they are not already obese. In addition to having fast-food locations nearby there is also fitness facilities such as a gyms. A study done by IUPUI shows that location has nothing to do with a child becoming obese but when studying more than sixty thousand children most were categorized by poor and publicly insured. This research shows that location is not the main issue but economy is. Not only do the poor live by fast-food but that's all they can afford, unlike gyms and other high-priced fitness facilities. Since money is a problem and fast-food is inexpensive it seems more reasonable to consume fast-food because every competitor in the industry has deals going on, for example Wendy's four for five dollars. In the article, "Obesity in America," the author notes that Americans take advantage of cheap prices, but by consuming these cheap prices no nutrients are being consumed, as the author
Obesity in America has become a huge problem. No one understands why the obesity rate in America is increasing, but we need to stop it. A lot of obesity rates come from poverty stricken families. Since they do not have the income to buy healthy food; they choose the cheapest fast food place to provide for themselves and their children. The fast food industry is the reason for the obesity rates rising higher each year. They are educated enough to know that people who do not have to money to buy healthy meals will depend on their company.
People may say that it is the fast food companies that are to blame for obesity, but I do not think it is. Yes they sell unhealthy food to us but it is our faults for consuming it. They only cause us to become overweight because we let them too. If we do not eat the food they put out in front of us we will not get fat. If we do eat it, we must exercise to burn it off. If we do not then that is the reason we are fat. It is common sense that if you eat something and it gets you fat then you should probably stop consuming it or do something to get rid of that
In the United States, there are many people who believe that if it wasn’t for fast food restaurants, they would be eating healthier and wouldn’t be overweight. People have even tried to sue fast food restaurants for their own self esteem issues. It’s ironic that people actually blame fast food restaurants, such as McDonald’s, for being obese. While fast food may be one of the contributors to the obesity outbreak, it certainly doesn’t stand alone. There are loads of reasons why people living in the United States are overweight. Some of these reasons involve dilemmas within the school arrangements, peer pressure, family genetics, educational issues, and even where a person lives. The National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health
The fast food industry provides quick, cheap, and easy access to foods that in the customers opinion, is very delicious, and affordable, however this food which millions of people around the world are constantly consuming, could actually cause major health problems, and weight gain in the long run. Major fast food companies throughout the world know what they are doing when it comes to marketing towards all types of people. Some people will find numerous different things to blame for the epidemic of fast food making individuals overweight. In recent research on, or discussions of the fast food industry having an effect on people's health, a controversial issue has been raised, and that is the fact that this problem affects not only
