Kristin,
You offer a great point on other ways one can be classified as mature. I would insist that Wendy must be knowledgeable of chemotherapy, outside of her own personal experience, before committing to her decision. Having the experience of going through chemotherapy for several years assuredly gives Wendy insurmountable awareness of her illness. Although, even with her slight chance of remission, I do think her rationality would only benefit from reading the stories of others or obtaining more literature on her illness. This is not to say that her physicians are not expressing full information and helping her understand all the options. Sometimes hearing the same information from another person or in another manner can offer more insight
Nearly 7 in 10 Americans use prescribed drugs, for several reasons, everyday. Prescription drugs have become a huge problem to America's health care system due to their exponentially rising price - so America must ask ourselves why prescribed drugs are so expensive, how these prices affect us, and how we can fix these dangerously high prices.
Across the nation and world assisted suicide is an issue that has been gaining attention for several years. With famous cases such as Jack Kevorkian it has become a household term and everyone has an opinion. There are strong cases on both sides, but the bottom line is while it may sound good for the present, it is not for the future. Assisted Suicide should not be legalized in Alabama as the negative outcomes far exceed the positive outcomes in the areas of impact on society, politics and medical education
Known as one of the world’s most deadly diseases, second only to heart disease, cancer is a well known killer. Cancer is a disease mankind has been burdened with since the first documented records of human existence (“The History of Cancer”). Until the early 1900s, cancer was exclusively treated with surgery, which didn’t usually yield very effective results. Only recently have doctors reached a point where they can use drug therapies to suppress the disease. Relative to humans, cancer treatments are very new. Because the market for pharmaceutical drugs is so new, they lack many regulations and pricing guidelines. This allows these new companies to create a drug and place almost any price on it. The system in place can very easily be taken
The Food and Drug Administration is the oldest consumer protection agency in United States (FDA 2). From recalls on food products to the monitoring of the safety of our medicine sources, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ensures that they are both safe and wholesome (FDA 1). The Food and Drug Administration also ensures that the cosmetics we use won’t harm consumers, and that radiation-emitting product such as microwaves are secure and effective (FDA 1).
Computers and technological devices have been heavily used in millions of elementary classrooms throughout the world. While many people believe this is a beneficial thing some think it is taking over the traditional ways of learning and damaging their social interaction. All the colors and sounds on the screen attract children and make them think that what they are learning is fun and enjoyable. Using computers in the classroom is very beneficial, but it should not be replacing traditional ways of education. As Elizabeth Bohnhorst, author of Floppy Disk Fallacies, stated “…computers are being used more and more frequently as a substitute for books, blackboards, and in some cases, the teachers themselves (251-252)”. Students will soon not have the need to bring pencils, paper, and even a backpack to class because everybody will be using computers as a means of learning. Moreover, computers should be used only as a tool to assist learners and make certain tasks accomplishable more efficiently while also keeping traditional ways of learning.
When an individual walks into a doctor's office they expect to receive treatment for his or her ailment and walk out. In a few weeks with proper rest and medication, the person is back to normal, except the person is not. The pain, never-ceasing, the patient is forced to live the remainder of his or her's life on prescription drugs. The blame should not be placed on the doctor, but rather the pharmaceutical industry. Profiting on system preservation and disease control, these companies are creating addictions by treating a patient with a disease that was never resolved. Once healers now stealers, pharmaceutical companies' are prescription thugs.
Are prescription drugs overprescribed? Are patients being prescribed the correct medications that they actually need? Are generic drugs doing the same for the human body that marked up brand name medications are? These are some of the public’s biggest questions that can be easily answered by research. Everyone is affected by medication and healthcare in general today. Many real life scenarios are offered throughout this writing to support the argument. The following thesis statement is a worldwide problem. Unfortunately, the United States has the largest problem with inflation of drug cost and over-prescription of medications. Many people are to blame: drug manufacturers, insurers, prescribers, educators, and many others. A change is needed.
The topic of the debate is whether computed tomography (CT) should be used as a screening tool annually for lung cancer. In other words, does the risk of radiation during CT screening outweigh the benefit of diagnosing lung cancer? Our group’s main argument for the pro side was using the study, which displayed the effectiveness of screening. From the 31,567 asymptomatic individuals screened, 412 of them actually had lung cancer. When treated they had a 10-year survival rate of 88%. This demonstrated that there is a higher survival rate when the cancer is detected in clinical stage I, in which the cancer is curable. Before the research I had a neutral standing for the argument because of lack of knowledge on the topic.
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human services the total number of drug overdose related deaths increased by 18 percent in 2016. Most of the drug overdoses were from opioids ("Michigan overdose deaths grew in 2016," 2017). Opioids are a class of drugs that include the illicit drug heroin, licit prescription pain relievers such as oxycodone, norco, and morphine, as well as other synthetic forms such as fentanyl. When taken how they are prescribed and for a short period of time opioid pain relievers are typically safe to use. However because they cause one to feel good on top of relieving pain they are often taken differently than prescribed or in larger quantities than recommended. Misuse can lead to dependence and more seriously an overdose and/or death.
My brother had to have surgery to remove a hernia his sophomore year of college, and then a few months after the surgery reported something was wrong again. My family believed it was just another hernia, however the doctors revealed that it was in fact a tumor that had grown in. My brother was diagnosed with testicular cancer and that it he had to have the tumor removed to prevent spreading. After the surgery they found out the cancer spread to his limbnodes and that he would have to go through four months of chemotherapy. Just two weeks ago he finished his last chemo treatment, and is already reporting feeling better, but he is still fighting it off today. Nobody in my family had this before, or any cancer for that matter. My parents have
I woke up this morning in kind of a bad mood. I went to work and tried to hide it, listened to my client talk about her troubles, receive a call with a last minute cancellation and became even more cranky. Then I went to Robeks to pick up a smoothy for a friend.
According to the American Cancer Society's "Cancer Facts & Figures 2017”, an estimated 600,920 people are expected to die from cancer in the United States this year. That's one person every 52 seconds. It is almost unfathomable that every 52 seconds a person dies of cancer. That shows just how great of a problem cancer really is. Though scientists have yet to find a cure for cancer, there are many different options to help prevent and treat it. For example, having routine cancer screenings. This is a topic that is extremely controversial. One one side of the debate, people say that routine cancer screenings lead to overtreatment and the treatment of problems that never would have caused any damage in the first place, while the other side says
Experimental drug treatments are one of today’s leading controversies. Many people feel as if it is morally wrong to test medications and treatments on humans when scientists and doctors are not completely sure of what the end results will be. I, personally, am an advocate for experimental drug treatments for the preeminent reason of faster medical advancement. Some drugs take years or decades to develop, but can be sped up to months and even just weeks of development when exploratory tests are done. If a patient of mine was terminally ill, I would strongly advise them to dedicate their body to the medical advancement cause. Of course, I’d be entirely honest about all of the risks involved, but also emphasize how much their contribution
Cancer, a long and difficult journey assimilated with death. Cancer, in general, is when cells begin to grow out of control and can start anywhere in the body. There are many different forms and types of cancer; scary but true. All forms of cancer is terrifying, but the most terrifying for children is Leukemia. Leukemia is the most common form of cancer in children and teens. It zones in on blood-forming cells, mainly white blood cells, in the bone marrow. This form of cancer accounts for almost one out of three cancers (Leukemia in Children). Why, in my opinion, this is the most intimidating form of cancer is because it takes the lives of the young who had so much potential and barely began to live their own lives. It takes those who are
For as long as I can remember, dinner has been one of the most important times of the day. It’s where the family would get together at the dining room table and reflect on the day. Every time we sat down we would tell new stories and listen to old jokes, but one thing always stayed constant. Our main dish would be some type of meat, usually being beef and turkey, and the occasional turkey. Both of my parents grew up on farms, and both raised livestock. My father would travel around the midwest to either sell, buy, or show cattle. Often times he would buy meat back or have it prepared for him and that’s what kept food on the table when he was younger. We don’t have livestock any more, and It’s been that way for over a decade. We go to meat lockers to get
