Immigration has played a large role in the history of the United States since the very founding of the country. As even the founding fathers of the United States were immigrants coming to the U.S. to seek a better life. For varies reasons, immigrants have been traveling to America to seek a better life whether to achieve better economic opportunity, religious freedom, and/or political refuge (Jiménez). These reasons have caused immigrants to flood into the U.S. In the most recent years’, weather to allow immigration to keep going as it is has been a hot topic for America. The hardships and struggles that Mexican immigrants go through while living in the United States are far worse than they need to be. It is harder for Mexican immigrants to obtain legal citizenship and find jobs in this country than it is for all other immigrants. George J. Borjas, a writer, from Politico Magazine exclaimed, “Donald Trump used one of my economic papers to back up his plan to crackdown on immigrants and build a physical wall: “Decades of record immigration have produced lower wages and higher unemployment for our citizens””. This demonstrates how U.S. citizens think that Mexican immigrants take jobs from citizens and don’t positively contribute to this country, but in reality they are just uneducated on the topic. For example, a study done by Pew Research Center shows that 74 percent of Republicans voted in favor of Trump’s wall being built to divide Mexico and the United States. But when a poll was taken only of people living within 350 miles of the border that number dropped to 63 percent. These numbers show that citizens who aren’t affected by Mexican immigration think it has a negative impact on our country, when in reality people who live and work with Mexican immigrants do not want the separation of the two countries as much. From this, you could infer that Mexican immigrants are not taking the jobs of U.S. citizens and they do not have the negative impact that we think they do, yet they are given less opportunity and freedom.

In every presidential administration, immigration policies are significant area of debate. There are many policies that are proposed in Trump Administration due to differing opinion of the administration. Currently policies on immigration include on Deferred Action for Childhood (DACA) which is protecting more than 800,000 immigrants in the United States. Moreover it also includes policies on increasing wages for H1-B visas. (H1-B Visa). Additionally, the Raise Act, (Reforming American Immigration for Strong Employment Act, it essentially sends 50000 visas to countries that send few immigrants over to the USA to promote diversity. Trump Administration has proposed to end diversity visas to protect its local citizens and employment. All these proposed changes have both positive and negative impact on GDP (Gross Domestic Product), employment/unemployment rates, government taxes.

Immigration has been an essential but disruptive aspect of the people and the political state of the United States; however, debates related to immigration and its benefits are intensified significantly. Opposing immigration keeps ranting on how government should exercise better law to control over the people entering into the States from the foreign land. One of the most buzzed argument is that American citizen is unemployed because immigrants stole their jobs and disrupted the economy (Hoban, 2017). Also, an appeal to National security and vulnerability after several terrorist attacks all over the world and also to the government to keep track and maintain the no. of immigrants to create a safer environment (Cafaro, 2009). However, the contrary to these arguments have often been proven right. The pattern of the immigration shows that the contribution of the immigrants has resulted in an economic boost that cannot be overlooked by the government.

Among the presidential candidates for the year 2016, Republican representative Donald Trump seems to have the most ridiculous and controversial campaign ideas. One of his more known campaign ideas has to do with banning Muslims from the United States. He generalized that all Muslims currently, or plan to act as, terrorists who will launch attacks on US soil. Building a wall on the border between US and Mexico is another well known idea of his, especially because he wants Mexico has to pay the cost for the wall’s construction. Even though politicians may paint immigration in a negative light, the United States relies on immigrants to help its economy, so it should not opt to throw them out of the country.

Immigration is currently a hot topic within in the United States government. Currently the United States Congress is fighting to decide the fate of the Dreamers, and the Immigration bill DACA. Like many controversial issues within the government, the Democrats and Republicans are in a disagreement on what to do. Each article, examines a different take on the current immigration reform. Bier’s main argument is that individuals who are contributing to immigration reform are ignorant, that Immigrants are not hurting the American Labor market. The next article, I examined, was written by Eric Cantor; Cantor states that although the parties each have a high stake on the decision Congress makes on DACA, there must be a decision otherwise, the law will remain status quo. Next, we look at Gessen’s article, the main argument is that immigrants should not be looked at valuable or illegal, they should not have to be talented in order to be welcome within the United States. Lastly, Vargas, an undocumented Immigrant, discusses the difficulties of being illegal within the United States, yet still shines light on the positive influences he had throughout his childhood and time in America.

Recently the United States has experienced a large number of immigrants coming over to the country within the 2000s. In recent studies, there are about 11.5 million undocumented immigrants in the United States. The undocumented immigrant population has grown 27% between 2000 to 2009. Immigrants from Mexico make up 59% of the undocumented immigrants in the United States. These undocumented immigrants can help the economy and country grow. These undocumented immigrants do have some downside to them, which makes people question do they really help this country. Immigration reform has been a topic of controversy for decades. Sometimes they come because in their home land the government does not help them instead they take away from them what little they have.

Immigration is such a complicated topic. I really didn’t realize everything that went into it until I got to college and was able to vote myself. Although I have written thousands of words on this topic, I still am unsure if I can for certain say that I completely agree with one side of the argument or the other.
