There is a transformation happening today that is completely changing the way that we do things. The ways that we are communicating are shifting from face to face interactions to short, interactive messages. Technology seems to be making it easier to stay connected, but it is restricting our interactions with others and leading to isolation. Human beings need to feel connected with family and friends to provide us with the needed emotional support (Harris). Social media offers an easy way to stay in connected with many different types of people. We can stay connected with others regardless of where they live. It is being used in many different ways, such as socializing, exchanging ideas, sharing creativity, and collaborating with others. The advancement in technology is becoming a great benefit in the classroom. More students are learning to use their creative side, which is encouraging individual learning and growth. Through technology, students find it is easier for them to work together with others. The group members can join together over the internet and they don’t have to be in the same room. As there continues to be new improvements in the various types of technology, it is helping the student prepare for the real world. Various online degree programs are becoming more readily available to students providing additional opportunities, lower costs, and more interaction. Research is beginning to shift from accessing information from a library to using a smart phone,
Social media is a game changing invention but it has come with a hefty amount of backlash. When I was younger I didn’t have a phone and social media was nothing compared to how it is now present day. It’s astonishing just how far the internet and social media have come. Not just when it comes to how advanced or how widespread they’ve become, what shocks me is just how influential social media has become. It’s almost borderline unsettling how much humans as a whole rely and depend on social media for nearly everything they know or want to discover. Social media has become not only a way to locate others and communicate with others but a way for people to learn and stay informed and aware of what goes on outside the doors of their cozy little nook. Looking back to my childhood days, I recall lounging on the couch with my mother in the morning watching news on the television but now that has become a distant memory if I need news today, I get it from social media on my cell phone. The poor television in the living room has become obsolete from lack of use because of a boost in social media's involvement with news and correct political issues.
Society’s dependence on a vast array of information and communication technology has not only changed the way we communicate but has also reinvented social activism. Social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook and forum websites like Reddit has given digital activism more potential than ever before to create real change. Whether the activism pertains to political, social or economic changes–digital technology allows individuals working collectively to achieve a common purpose with more ease in their pursuit of change.
With social media being fairly new to our modern world, there are a significant amount of different ways to utilize it through many different applications and websites. Some of these websites are being applied towards social media. People need social media to initiate relationships with new friends or keep in contact with distant friends along with family. Social media is also operated to help promote upcoming events or to help speak your mind so that everyone can see things from your own unique perspective. Debates over social media are very popular, this is because it can be easier to hide behind a screen than to argue in person. Social media is applied for easier accessibility to news of what is happening around you as well as what is happening around the world. Countless people value group messages, Facebook messages, for example, to reach out to people who might be harder to connect with in person. Social media has become more than just something that we play with for fun, for some it has a become a part of their lifestyle and everyday living.
Social media is a very big deal in today's society, teenagers use it to socialize, find information and for entertainment. The first thing we could find on social media is really nice comments on teens photos. The second thing we could find is teens speaking out and being heard. Social media is helpful to teens because it boosts their confidence and lets teens have a voice. Despite this, some people say social media leads to cyberbullying, but only a small percent of teens said it made them feel less.
Nowadays, a lot of people are using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumbler and so on. Since the Internet has propagated rapidly, social media have progressed a lot. The generalization of the internet makes us to live conveniently and fast. People are almost using smart phones, i-phones or comfortable devices which can access to internet. These equipments make us to do social network easily. It helps contact friends, family, and other people even though they live far away. It could be, however, abused, if you don’t use properly. Especially, it is important that we understand and regulate the use of social media by young children.
As a child grows up, everything they are exposed to affects their personality and shapes them into their own person. The schools they attend, the television shows they watch, and the people they are around can influence their ideology of the world and their place in it. Some people view social media (YouTube, Instagram, Musical.ly, Snapchat, etc.) as a good way to distract their children and keep them entertained, but children should not be allowed to spend a majority of their time on social media accounts. Some parents may argue that they should not shield their children from reality, but it is important to reduce the amount of social media children are exposed to, in order to reduce the amount of biased information and prejudice they may have.
Social media is a world-wide network being used by millions. It’s either Facebook, Snapchat, even just text messaging that can be considered social media. Nowadays kids don’t ask for toys or some cool contraption that they saw in a store; hence, they are now asking for any technological device they see at stores. Social media can be very treacherous, for example: false advertising, inappropriate website, giving away personal information because they think the person on the other side of the screen is their friend, or because they’re going to give them something they’ve really wanted. Teenagers have been becoming more vacuous throughout generations. They don’t know what’s good and what’s bad at this point. Many of us rely on the phone and many people say they can’t live without it. Once they lose their phone they go into a state of panic and find themselves dumbfounded not knowing what to do with themselves anymore. When trying to look for a news story, you find yourself reading an article about what a Kardashian was wearing, or “How to get Noticed on Social Media” , or when a celebrity just had a baby. All illogical news, no importance.
A huge outlet that appeals to many people is social media, being able to live out our own lives and other’s lives and through pictures, statuses, likes, comments, and captions. The appeal of social media is the ease of being able to keep up with other people’s lives, watch funny videos of dogs, learn about simple 5-minute recipes, or update people on what happens in your life, all at the touch of a button or screen. There are many different platforms that can be considered as social media and are open for anyone to access. Although there are many positive aspects to social media, social media ends up being a happiness drain, because it disconnects us from other people and raises expectations. I know these sound a little drastic, but a lot of people don’t realize the side effects of social media and how much it actually affects us.
Our society has become heavily reliant on social media, and today’s younger generation cannot avoid using it in their everyday lives. As time has progressed, social media has advanced significantly, becoming easier to access with a touch of a button. These advancements provide both positive and negative consequences to youths’ relationships. Due to the rapid advancement of social media, youths’ real-life relationships with their peers have been affected both positively and negatively.
In our present society, people are continuously making this world more accessible. Time and distance is not an obstacle in communicating with each other. We are using technology to maintain and strengthen our familial relationships. we also use technology to understand other cultures and meet people all around the world. Mobile technology made it easier for more people to maintain social life online. But, in spite of making us more social or socially active, these technologies are causing the opposite. In many cases, this is a malicious curse. Use of technology is one of the most compelling reasons for the social awkwardness of this millennia.
Social media can provide many benefits that, for the most of us, could not live without. For instance, could you imagine not being able to see your Aunt Karen’s recipe for homemade pecan pie? What about not being able to see your friend Lindsey’s acai bowl she had for breakfast on her instagram? We would not experience those things without social media, that’s one of the reasons we value it so much. Now days, everyone has social media accounts from the president to even dogs. Certainly it is safe to say that social media has impacted our society.
Internet started 30 years ago on August 6, 1991 by the World Wide Web. However, the first social media came out roughly about 30 years ago. The name of it was Six Degrees and it was created by Andrew Weinreich on 1997. Six degrees had the capabilities of uploading a profile, making friends, and send messages with family or friends. Nevertheless on 2004, Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg, a 19-year-old who created the biggest social media that changed the world. Till this day, Facebook has reached up 2 billion users and still in counting. Nonetheless, most users are from their teens to mid-40s, that had the capability of spreading information across the globe setting a chain reaction that created and spread fake news. Fake news is easily spread though social media to large numbers of people who are willing to believe and share the fictional material. (Brennen 169-172) According to Gretel, “In the midst of a nationwide debate over the proliferation of fake news on social media sites – and, as one 2015 study by the Media Insight Project shows, at a time when nearly 9 in 10 Millennials regularly get news from Facebook – the numbers, at first glance, may point to a bleak, uninformed future.” Therefore, teens need to use social media to disintegrate some of the repercussion of news.
Five thousand hours of online observation, done by Southern California University, found that the digital world is creating new opportunities for young people to grapple with social norms, explore interests, develop technical skills, and work on new forms of self-expression that wasn’t possible before social media existed (Goff). This brings us to a crippling question that have people on both sides of the argument, is social media truly beneficial for society? There are stats that can be found for either position to state their arguments, however, no one can ignore the actual facts that should lead people to realize that social media is beneficial to society.
Social media can be a powerful tool that allows citizens to feel connected to public officials.
Twenty years ago, people started their day reading the morning paper, but nowadays we start our morning with our eyes locked on our phones. We are hooked in the age of social media, where millions of teenagers worldwide are using it every second. However, the mental and emotional health of teenagers are at risk when they are exposed to long-term social media usages. It begins as an addiction, and it gradually builds its way up to cause low self-confidence, and even depression. On the bright side, engaging in nature, speaking to somebody, and avoiding social media are effective solutions in solving this 21st century crisis.
