New Yorker: A lot of what I’ve stated in this piece so far might have you thinking “these are what all the right wing members believe” and you aren’t necessarily wrong. Financial conservatism and rectification of our immigration problems are pretty universally held principals on the right. However, where Trump differs and how he differs is why he has risen to the top of the pool, for me.

In today’s society, there is constant commotion over how power is used and abused. In the real world, there is a big complication with Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, he is supposed to be a helping hand and a person that would help Russia with his power. On the contrary, many people who live in Russia and across the world have recognized the corrupt moves he makes by stealing money from citizens to build his empire and worth. Some find his abuse of power to be justified by how much he has helped Russia while others couldn’t disagree more. This example effectively demonstrates that power use and abuse is solely based on how the individual views it, not a set opinion everyone agrees with.

Vladimir Putin is not an Ignatian leader because he does not promote justice, he does not respond well to criticism, and he does not serve with and for others. Putin was born on October 7th, 1952 in Leningrad, Russia. He was named after his father, Vladimir Spiridonovich Putin, who had served in the Soviet Navy until he was severely injured in 1942(bio.com). After graduating, Putin would follow in his father's footsteps and join the KGB, the military service for the Soviet Union. From 1975-1991 Putin had various roles in the KGB, finally retiring as Lieutenant Colonel. Putin's service in the military helped him become the assertive political figure that he is today.

A sovereign of the land is not a possessor of that country, but he/she is a guardian of that land. Nevertheless, the most rulers forget this simple proclamation and try to exercise their power over the inhabitants’ will. The Russian government is one of constant ideological change, from the October Revolutionist Lenin to the extreme values of Josef Stalin. It can be argued that power always corrupts, as seen in the character Napoleon from Animal Farm by George Orwell and Vladimir Putin with their characteristics of corruption, centralizing government to suit their own needs, and the use of fear to keep their power.

The dictatorships of Eastern Europe significantly contrasted the classical dictatorship. In Vaclav Havel’s The Power of the Powerless, the idea of the post-totalitarian system is used to distinguish the dictatorships of Eastern Europe from classical dictatorships on the bases of: its verified historical roots, lack of social distinction of the ruling, open wielding of power, and reliance on ideology . The post-totalitarian system fell victim to the use of ideology as a power source founded in lies and modifications of reality. The threat truth posed to the post-totalitarian system highlighted its fragile dependency on ideology as a source of manipulative power and falsehoods that allowed mankind to cope with its departure from humanity.

Throughout time violent insurgencies have risen to terrorize the world, especially their masses. Either through support of the people at one point or through savage means, these dictators have created a name for themselves in history and will remain in the textbooks as either a malevolent cold-blooded individual or a brilliant individual with sinister actions. Now, getting these dictators ostracized from power becomes problematic due to the fear that they instilled in their multitude. In multiple cases, fear is a common attribute that tyrants practice as a tool for oppression. By having the masses fear their leader, then the chances of being overthrown decrease because there is no trust amongst each other and repercussions are very common.

Placing Vladimir Putin accurately on the political spectrum presents several challenges. First, Russia’s political system does not conform to western norms and therefore the standard definitions are not always appropriate. Putin, who spent a career in the KGB, is seen as highly secretive. He does not make frequent public speeches, and in general, Russian leaders do not typically feel the need to explain policy decisions or their rationale to the general populace. This makes it difficult to determine to what degree necessity and practicality motivates Putin’s decisions versus his own political philosophy. The lack of transparency in the Russian system further precludes detailed assessment or evaluation of leaders and their decisions such as would be demanded in western democracies. The Russian state owns 85% of the national media, rendering independent and unbiased scrutiny impossible. For all these reasons, Putin is enigmatic to most of the world outside his own country and therefore determining his personal political philosophy is not an easy task.

A great example of a leader who is obsessed with possessing as much power and control is Putin. The film we watched showed Putin as a person who quickly gained power and access to the government with his manipulation and ties with unorganized groups throughout Russia. It is great to have a state which is strong and can look after its people when needed but once a state becomes too powerful and doesn't focus on the safety of its people any more then what is the point of the state even existing. There is a quote in the book Introduction to Political Theory written by Hoffman and Graham which states, "...there are two means of fighting: 'one according to the laws, the other with force; the first way is proper to man, the second to beasts' (pg.15). Putin is a leader who appears to not follow any laws and instead leads with force and control. The way he took out the Chechen people and tried to justify his actions by stating that they attacked innocent people and they needed to be killed was barbaric and inhumane. Although, Putin is the president of Russia, we can see some of his ideals and the desire to be the most powerful present in the United States as well. This system had centralized or unitary power in which the state had all the control within the country. The new system is a combination of a semi-presidential and federalism system where all the power is controlled by one man, Vladimir Putin.
