Bang! The pop of a gunshot is heard echoing through the hallways of your school. This sends the whole school into terror and panic mode. The threat of death is too real. The shooter comes raging into your barricaded classroom. Within seconds they begin shooting everyone and yourself. With a blink of an eye you and everyone in the classroom are dead. What could have stopped this person from shooting? Who could have stopped this person form shooting? What actions can be made from this event? One serious issue that threatens Columbia High School and other neighboring schools is school safety. School safety is a serious problem for Columbia and other schools in and around the community. It is the student’s job to attend school and it is the schools …show more content…
“A well- regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” (The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution). In regards, the second amendment is a very important amendment (being the second amendment). It guarantees the free people a God given right of self- preservation. The word “infringe” means to actively break the terms of a law or agreement. Gun control is doing exactly that. From the website tenthamendmentcenter.com it exclaims, “Justice Scalia said that there are “undoubtedly” limits to the right to bear arms under the second amendment. In other words, this is congressman states that there are limits on the second amendment. However, there is clearly no limits on the second amendment and the right to bear …show more content…
In an article from the Washington Examiner it reads, “A qualified teacher with a handgun on their hip is perfectly capable of instructing a classroom.” To add, some people are opposed of teachers carrying guns in classrooms where kids are supposed to learn. Although, if a teacher conceals a gun it is not visible. The students would have no clue of its presence. Also, some are concerned that the teacher could end up shooting their own students if carrying was permitted. This is a very understandable situation for many people. As a parent, trusting a teacher with a gun can be a little worry some. However, parents already trust or must trust their kids with teachers. If a teacher was crazy enough, they could just bring a gun from home and shoot up their classrooms, so what’s the difference in making it legal for teachers to carry? In an article written by Carlos R. Munoz from the Herald Tribune it expresses, “In the wake of last week’s mass shooting at a south Florida high school, Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight is calling for a new safety program for the county’s school – one that incorporates retired law enforcement officers and military veterans.” In regards, allowing schools to hire ex-military or police to protect and guard against shootings would help take the pressure off of teachers carrying guns.
My second reason as to why teachers should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon is that it has worked for other countries. Israel and Thailand actually encourage their teachers to carry weapons. There was an article in 2004 in the National Review that is about how Israel and Thailand are set examples of arming teachers. The article stated that, “Though Thailand’s government is extremely hostile to gun ownership in general, it has recognized that teachers ought to be able to safeguard their students and themselves.” I agree with this. Teachers should be allowed to protect their students and themselves and if allowing the teachers to carry a concealed weapon will protect them then let them do it. The article also stated that, “Terrorist attacks on schools and school children could almost be completely eliminated in a very short time.” There are examples of attacks on schools that have failed. In
There are many reasons that teachers should not carry firearms. One reason is that children like to get their hands on absolutely everything, especially children who are younger. Many children love to allow their imaginations to run wild. They like to search for
There are two main opinions on equipping teachers with firearms. The problem is not with the polarization of these views, but the lack of willingness to compromise. Polarization of two ideas creates an inability to solve the problem. The National Rifle Association’s National School Shield is an uncompromising policy requiring a teacher to carry or possess a firearm (Pérez, 2017). The other side though is
School shootings are terrifying and a big problem in today’s society. Schools have added lockdown drills, bullet proof glass and metal detectors. School should be a safe area for children to learn instead of fearing for their life. Instead of buying metal detectors and hiring more officers, there is a much easier solution in order to decrease and prevent school shootings. We have to be more alert about securing weapons at home and being aware of suspicious behavior at school in order to keep children and faculty safe.
The Second Amendment states that “a well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed”. The way the Supreme Court interprets this amendment changes constantly because not even the Supreme Court fully understands the limits and rights given to citizens. Some argue that this amendment protects our right to own a gun, but is not very clear. Over the years the second amendment has become a huge debate over gun rights and gun control. This is a cause of all the gun violence this country has been facing for many years and they need a way to help prevent gun violence or even suppress the amount of deaths faced by these tragedies. One of the ways this
Should teachers be trusted to take on the tremendous responsibility that comes with bearing arms? Due to the frequency of school shootings in the past decade, the idea of arming teachers has become more prominent. The dilemma that often arises is whether or not arming teachers will prevent more problems than it will cause. David Person, author of “Instead of arming teachers, hire police” points out in USA Today that, “Slightly more than 60% of Americans oppose arming teachers, according to one poll.” There are numerous reasons as to why teachers should not be armed. To begin, teachers were not hired to be first responders. Additionally, teachers being armed can potentially cost more lives and result in teachers having to cope with shooting
According to TIME magazine, since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14, 2012, there have been over 290 school shootings all around the United States. Teachers, with proper training and determination to save lives, should be able to carry a concealed handgun in schools. Teachers should be able to carry for many reasons, including protecting students until police can arrive, eliminating the amount of school shootings, and helping the students feel more safe in the school if this were to happen.
If the gun was placed in an easily accessible area for the teachers, it would also be easily accessible to the students. Most kids, especially boys, handle their problems with their hands not their heads, that explains why many school shootings are executed by students that go to the school, which would make it much easier for them to carry out a violent shooting. Some would say to lock up the gun so students couldn't get ahold of it, but then by time teachers got to the gun they wouldn't be able to protect their students. Overall, there would be no point in giving teachers a gun in the first
“I’d Feel More Comfortable knowing teachers aren’t armed” - Ben Carson People feeling that guns will make schools safer are usually on that side because most are afraid of being a victim of a school shooting, when most don’t realise that if there is a person in the class already that is armed there will be a more chance of being shot if the teacher has problems after they were “trained” .Teachers being armed at school might be a good thing for people and bad for some others that really just don't like guns at all. According to The New York Post, the Majority of people 82% wouldn’t feel like a teacher having a gun would be necessary. The other 18% feel like it is needed for a less chance of a school shooter to take out people. Guns should be held away from teachers and there are many people that can agree with my position. If teachers were to be armed with guns, the students wouldn’t really be paying attention to what the teacher is trying to teach, but mostly focus on what if the teacher pulls out
According to Agnich (2010); Böckler, Seeger, Sitzer, & Heitmeyer (2013, p. 2) there has been an unprecedented trend in shootings, especially within the last decade. But, one of the most feared shooting tends to happen at schools where are children attended. These types of shootings put fears in teachers, education administrators, parents’ and students. Even though these incidents can happen
The first and main reason teachers should not carry guns to school is the simple fact that weapons should never be in school no matter who is carrying them. Schools have always been a safe haven environment for children to learn and feel important. If we bring guns into the equation schools will no longer be the same. If anything schools will begin to feel like a prison. Teachers will become the wardens. They could even start to use the
Teachers with firearms are nothing more than an average citizen with a gun, no heavy training to prepare for the worse. The only people who should have firearms are security guards and police officers, those who are properly trained and can handle these volatile situations. The only thing that could come from teachers carrying guns is the increase chance of students or other staff being caught in the crossfire. Those who become teachers go into their job every day to do exactly that, teach. They have no desire to be babysitters or security guards.
The main purpose of armed teachers is to protect students in case of emergencies, but it makes schools become guns free zones, and it is considered as a potential danger in the educational environment. What if half of school staff carries handguns into schools, it would make school environment be more scary and pressured. As a result, the school violence might occur. For example, teachers could loss calm when getting stressed something off campus or on campus. They would abuse the guns as pressure to make students, so the idea of educators should carry guns is a school violence at some
School shootings have become a major problem not only in South Carolina, but in the United States. School shootings have shockingly become more likely now than ever. A recent report showed that over 230 school shootings have arose since 2013, meaning that there has been at least 1 school shooting per week for the last 4 years. Once students experience these traumatic happenings, the district as a whole receives lower standardized test scores, lessened student enrollment and even frightened parents. Parents begin to lose faith in the school system and no longer find comfort in sending their child to and from that school. By definition, school shootings are anytime a firearm discharges a live round inside a school building or on a school campus or school grounds. This connection question’s objective to read about a specific school shooting, it stood out to me that every child has a motive for the school shooting - whether big or small. Therefore, I have conducted research to find out why and how to stop school violence.
Violence in schools has spread widely throughout the world, leading to many problems among families and students. On April 20, 1999, Columbine High School was the most famous and deadly act of violence in the United States due to a lack of security. The massacre happened where Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 students, one teacher, and injuring 21 other students before turning the guns on themselves. As a safe environment such as school, it is very important to make sure students feel comfortable and safe during the semester. The best solution to minimizing the violation from happening again involves two actions; make all school campuses improved by increasing the number of security police and increasing the security cameras.
