Victoria Sandlin Professor Sharifian Government 2306-73434 15 April 2017 Sanctuary Cities Local government has been under attack lately in Texas; local control has an importance to the people attached to it that state government can’t compete with. Local control has been an effective way for getting Texas resident’s messages across to state control. The people of cities and counties greatly influence local control by advocating about the importance of certain powers, for example, fracking. Fracking has been known and proven to increase earthquakes in Texas, creating an importance to the Texan people that fracking is acknowledged and dealt with accordingly by the state government. Many are reaching out to local and state governments

As Rinaldi stated in his article that local control “poses a bigger risk of enacting laws that infringe on individual rights,” which creates some concern that liberty has taken the proverbial backburner in society. 2 Rinaldi states that when local control supporters agree with a state law restricting municipal authority, local control doesn’t seem to be an issue anymore. The in favor opposition creates a compelling argument that local control is the voice of the people and more policy development transpires through this level of government. In very recent media coverage it was made known that local government took a stance on fracking and its’ effects on the reoccurring earthquakes. 3 Unfortunately, the state senate passed a bill that will basically dissipate local control over oil and gas industry activities (White). Many people are upset by this, but the solution is as a voter, pay close attention to the Texas representative and senator and how they voted. 4 Voters can make a difference in this …show more content…
It also subjects law enforcement to a class A misdemeanor for failing to “hold non-citizen inmates subject to removal” (Aguilar). This creates various responses from police officers whom come from an undocumented family and do not personally agree with this. Sheriff Sally Hernandez from Travis county in Texas decided to take a stand against this new ban against sanctuary cities. Sheriff Sally decided that her county will not comply with this infringement on families and their safety (Aguilar). This caused the state to “deprive the local government of all of its state funding,” showing that this is going to be a long battle between the state and local government of Texas and Travis County. The state is disciplining the local government of Travis County by withholding all state funding which is quite detrimental to the county itself (Aguilar). State government definitely uses their money as a source of power over local government. This seems very over-the-top but it is what the state finds necessary to uphold order and
For the past twenty to thirty years, hydraulic fracturing, more commonly known as fracking, has been the number one source of natural gas, oil, and energy in the United States. The process of fracking is that a well is built above the ground and then a drill digs several thousand feet deep into the ground to extract the oil and natural gas that is trapped inside of rock formations. Fracking is very controversial because of the cost of the process and the environmental “threats” that it poses. From methane emissions to earthquakes, fracking has been accused to be linked with several environmental issues. To prevent any environmental dangers, states place regulations and boundaries that energy companies have to follow in order to build a well and keep it up and running. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) also works with states to help regulate these wells. More importantly, fracking in the United States is very important and acts as a bridge to the future. While it may be argued that hydraulic fracturing is not beneficial to the economy and harmful to the environment, fracking in the United States should not be banned because fracking is not only imperative to the growth of jobs and the economy, but it also does not put the surrounding environment in danger.
Local control is an important principle that should guide lawmakers in their consideration of bills that affect local government. The Texas Legislature has decided that the people of Laredo, Dallas, Houston, College Station Nacogdoches, Southlake, Harlingen, Sherman, Port Aransas, Fort Stockton and so many other cities across the State of Texas shouldn’t have the right to protect the communities they live in from the very real dangers that fracking and other oil and gas industry activities pose. This is an unprecedented retreat from Texas’ long tradition of local control. You have one that believes it is all about the money. As to where the other believe that it is more of a safety caring thing. Local governments are far superior
In today's global economy, energy is one of the most crucial and sought after commodities. Who supplies it and how much they supply determines how much influence they have over other countries as well as the global economy. This is why hydraulic fracturing is currently such an important and controversial topic in the United States. Hydraulic fracturing, more commonly known as "fracking" or hydrofracturing, is the process of using pressurized liquids to fracture rocks and release hydrocarbons such as shale gas, which burns more efficiently than coal. This booming process of energy production provides a much needed economic boost, creating jobs and providing gas energy for Americans. The efficiently burning shale gas reduces carbon
Fracking is a highly controversial practice that utilizes the injection of water, chemicals and abrasives to extract relatively inaccessible pockets of natural resources. Although fracking has the potential to benefit the domestic economy, the practice of hydraulic fracturing, if left unregulated and mismanaged poses significant risks to the environment, the ecosystem and safety.
As the Texas legislature moves to the end of their one hundred and forty days in session, a few key bills held the attention of both the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate. Two of these central bills are referred to as Sanctuary cities, Senate Bill 4, and Voter ID, Senate Bill 14. Though these two issues are hotly contested by most democratic representatives, numerous republicans hold many concerns over these two bills as well as Governor Greg Abbott recently signed the two into law. As I analyze these two issues, a few primary issues strike me as an issue. With the adoption of new regulations and restrictions for both voter identification and sanctuary cities, the political,
Fracking is preeminent problem, affecting the environment and communities of Virginia. King George and the Rappahannock River are especially being affected by the fracking activity in Virginia. Because the people of these areas are riddled with problems, fracking should be regulated closely. This should be done for the safety of the residents of King George and surrounding areas. Fracking endangers our communities, the environment, and our food and water sources, which is why is should be put to a stop.
Going through the Shapiro Library on SNHU Wedsite, I found a few great articlesabout the drilling going on in North Carolina called Fracking. The first article that I foundis titled, “ Fracking Fight Advances in North Carolina” by Sarah Ferris. The secondresource I found that had a lot of great information and facts is titled, “ North Carolinawants in on Fracking Game” by Reid Wilson. I found these two articles very interestingbecause they both are telling the pros and cons of fracking and what the government’splan is with the drilling. The article written by Sarah Ferris, titled “Fracking Fight advances in NorthCarolina” stated the concern of what drilling in North Carolina will do to the surroundingenvironment. Ferris stated,” The backlash
“Both the House and Senate versions would ban cities, counties and universities from prohibiting law enforcement officers from asking about a person’s immigration status or enforcing immigration law.” (Dallas News) In this case, local government would be penalized and fined if they went against this ban. It is very unfortunate because a lot of innocent undocumented people would now be afraid to report any form of crime from fear of deportation. I believe that it is the responsibility of all branches of government including local to determine what is best for their citizens but it is equally important for them to carefully review the effects that any laws or regulations will have one the community as a whole and not just target specific groups.
In Political Science, students will learn various topics on how governments run and on how Texas government runs. Changing Relationships between the Federal Government and the States, Issues in Texas Party Politics, and Strategies: The Quest for Political Power stands one of the topics that were covered in this course. I will explain the Strategies: The Quest for Political Power in depth regarding on how interest groups can influence government policies and various of the accidents throughout the past few decades of government history that involves of interest groups influence.
Change is always good because our world is always changing and shifting, why not try something different, right? Texas has been a conservative state for far too long and obviously it’s not a hundred percent the right answer. What can we do? We can start by pushing for a better educational and government system. Yes, this will raise our taxes, but, wouldn’t you pay more for better in quality of service. It is hard for people to succeed in a conservative state because the government is worried about politics and the states state budget. In this paper, we will look at why Texas needs to reform and push towards a more liberal government. There are a few reasons why improving the education and health-care system will improve our state. These improvements will impact our state and by providing Texas with the tools to succeed and provide a stronger government for the future. First, we will go through why Texas policies do not promote the general welfare of our state. Second, we will go through why our society has an obligation to help the less fortunate and last “Should the state of Texas be morally compelled to assist the less fortunate.”
Environment Texas is an active organization and the people involved in it are actively taking part for the protection of the environment namely: air, water and open spaces. I also believe that the surrounding we live in must be clean and free from pollution and degradation. In order to make this issue stand out nationwide, we must start it from our state first. Texas NACCP main goal is “to support our mission of racial equality and equal justice” (Texas State Conference of NACCP Units). They believe in equality and so do I. I believe that nobody should be deprived of their rights and should not be discriminated, as all human beings are equal. I stand for Right to Vote except for the people charged with criminal felony.
The issue of whether we should continue fracking without research has been widely debated around the world. The issue is important because it has fundamental environmental concerns and economic questions about the process of hydraulic fracturing. “Fracking” is the process of penetrating down into the earth before a high-pressure water mixture is absorbed at the rock to release the gas inside. Water, sand, and chemicals are then inserted into the rock with compression which allows the gas to flow out to the head of the well. Fracking fluid, which can be polluted with heavy metals like arsenic, known human carcinogens, has seeped into local waterways and polluted groundwater. People who live near fracking wells have a heightened danger of developing cancer, asthma, and other serious ailments associated with inhaling or ingesting the toxic chemicals involved in the fracking process. Countries approach fracking and researching much differently from each other. The injection of fluid into shale beds at high pressure to extract petroleum resources has been happening across the United States of America at rapid pace. By 2003, a gigantic public relations campaign was launched to lobby Congress to pass what is
In the United States, the people who are most likely to protest are active in protecting the environment or they live in a forest or river area that may be directly affected by any fracking happening there. People are against fracking because they do not like the pollution it can cause as well as believing some studies showing that it could lead to earthquakes. Many are concerned about the possible contamination of groundwater resources from the chemicals and water used to in the process of fracking. Many people do not want to give up their land for the government to use for fracking even if they receive compensation because the compensation is often less in value than the land they are sometimes being forced to give up to the government. Some people may like it because if
A consistent rush of water provides the soundtrack for the sun setting on another hard-working day in Georgia. The few thousand residents with almost no money made their voices echo louder than the fossil fuel talking point echo chamber. It’s not over though. Georgia sits on a large sheet of shale, which could open it to fracking. Fracking is exempt from the Clean Water Act (Hines, 2012). For now, though, the town fades out of the public eye like the sunset dropping below the trees, giving the people a brief moment of respite before having to fight for environmental and humanitarian justice yet
The global crisis surrounding energy needs grows in severity as time goes by and in order to solve it, scientists have created the innovative solution known as hydraulic fracturing (Source 5). Hydraulic fracturing, commonly referred to as “fracking,” is a process that injects water, chemicals, sand, and other materials into layers of shale. The injected mixture cracks the layers of shale, releasing trapped natural gasses that can be collected (Source 1). Fracking occurs deep under the surface of the earth, miles below the groundwater that is accessed from drinking-water wells. In the mid-2000s, “fuel prices were rising rapidly” (Source 5). Hydraulic fracturing was a cheap solution that not only brought the world out of a state of emergency but made oil prices drop. The new method of gas collection grew the oil and gas industry, benefiting people all around the world. Fracking is a cheap, effective solution to global needs, but is under attack from skeptics who worry about environmental hazards. The claims against fracking not only have no real evidence but also risk destroying the jobs in the oil and gas industry as well as support for energy needs. Hydraulic fracturing is not only a cheap but a safe method that supports global needs surrounding both energy and jobs.
