Arguments Against Police Brutality

In 2015 an American citizen was killed every 8 hours at the hands of the police; the very people that are responsible for preventing and stopping crime. Most of these victims are targeted for being anything other than white as police believe that unarmed minorities are dangerous no matter the situation. That's why police brutality has led to the increased deaths of African-Americans, Native-Americans, Hispanics, and the LGBT community based only on the color of their skin or self-identification. This excessive force by the U.S. police needs to be punished to further prevent the casualties of more people.

The type of question this poll was asking was about how different parties view Police Officers, College Professors, Military, Republicans, Democrats, Liberals, and Conservatives. The question on asking how they rank these type of political beliefs or profession is important to see how the average citizen views these professions, especially now with more extreme political beliefs now and the views of Police with the issue of Police Brutality. This issue is not extremely pressing as it asks the opinion citizens to have for different groups (Democrats, Conservatives, Military). The question seemed to be very neutral and not really skewed to have a preference on one side or another. The question was “How do you feel towards [INSERT ITEM; RANDOMIZE]?

Police brutality is the use of any force exceeding that reasonably necessary to accomplish a lawful police purpose ( Police Brutality). There has been some serious human rights violated by officers in the world today. Mainly focusing on African Americans and their perspective, there has been severe beatings, fatal chokings, and shootings and none have been justified. Most cases do not get reported or are left to be forgotten. Families all throughout the united states suffer each and every day because of the unexplainable amount of excessive police force.

Police brutality against African Americans has become a hot topic in the media. Police brutality is when excessive force is used when it is unnecessary. During the civil rights movement, African American men and women fought for and gained their rights. They may have believed that their suffering had ended there but there is still a long way to go. In Martin Luther King Jr. “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, he writes about how African Americans are being treated by police and the court system. He describes it as “ grossly unjust treatment” (paragraph 6). Today it is three times more likely for a black person to be killed than a white person. One out of three of the black people killed by police were armed and suspected to have committed an actual crime

For many years, numerous accounts of police brutality have gone unknown or inaccurately recorded due to lack of eye witnesses or imprecise written statements. Criminal charges have been dropped or dismissed because there wasn’t enough evidence proving that the suspect committed the crime. Police body cameras are beneficial and helpful for police officers and citizens, to prevent instances of police brutality, monitor the interaction between police officers and citizens and forcing law enforcement to take more accountability for their actions.

Police brutality is a major issue, it happens when a police officer uses excessive force to apprehend someone, resulting in the convict to be badly injured or then killed. The idea of issuing police officers wear body cameras arose. Wearing the cameras will help prevent the events such as the case with Slager. Maybe the cameras will benefit this country.

When I argue with someone about a topic, I notice that I am hardly listening to what they are saying. I am more focused on proving my point, and I disagree before the opposing argument is even presented. People tend to stick to their beliefs. In addition, if people find a flaw within their beliefs then, they either ignore it or find something that in their mind justifies their views. This is the type of behavior that I have seen on the Internet. For instance, the topic of police brutality is one that has been all over social media this year. Hashtags like Sandra Bland, Michael Brown, and Ferguson have trended on Twitter, and they are proof that some people are tired of police brutality. Through the passed years police brutality has been known throughout the Country. Many blacks have been killed by white policeman and still there has been no stop. Our question is in the future, how will things turn out between the differences between color?

The brutality of the police force has been a long worldwide problem, but especially between the years of 2012-2016. Black people are being unjustly beaten and shot in plain sight for doing nothing while being unarmed. Journal of African American Studies “Blacks are viewed as deserving of harsh treatment in the criminal justice system” (482). “Black males with more “Afrocentric” features may receive longer sentences than blacks with less Afrocentric features like lighter skin and straighter hair”(482). Nowadays it is important to know about the police force. It’s important to know our rights as citizens and be careful around cops. Not everybody is good, but not everybody is bad also. In The New York Amsterdam News 21 people were killed by Chicago police in 2008. Entire families were being attacked. They believe it’s because of their skin color and how they are different. The year of racism started off with the world seeing the police murder of Oscar Grant. “The media have pushed people away from hearing the issue of police brutality, and it has fallen off of the radar screen.”(2) “You can’t give in. They will try to make an example out of you, try to break your spirit!”(2) African Americans say do not trust the cops with anything. “They will ruin you.”(2)

The United States of America has many horrible police officers. This has created a stereotype that all police officers are terrible. One of the main reasons police officers have been target lately is, because many innocent people are harassed by them daily. There are multiple ways to classify these police officers as horrible being, but police brutality, corruption, and how they handle violent protest are three of many classifications.

A young man’s brutal death at the hands of the police is found justified in a court of law due to his “suspicious” appearance: a black hoodie and his hands in his pocket. An elderly woman is fatally shot in her home for her relation to a suspected criminal. A married man with two toddlers is choked to death after a minor traffic stop by an officer who later claimed that his unarmed victim was wielding a gun. These people all have a few commonalities: the color of their skin, their presumed guilt at first sight, and their ultimate unjustified death administered by the law force. These are not uncommon occurrences. Due to the staggeringly disproportionate rate of African-Americans killed by the police, and the underlying rampant racial profiling, police brutality towards blacks in America must be called to light.

There is no question that police brutality, when it occurs, is one of the most egregious violations of public trust that a public servant can commit. Police officers, those individuals taxed with protecting the public from danger, should never be in a situation where they pose a threat to the public. Furthermore, there is no question that police brutality occurs. Moreover, generally when there are allegations of police brutality, there has been some type of underlying violent incident. In addition, while issues of brutality may seem clear-cut to a disinterested observer, it is critical to keep in mind that law enforcement officers are not presented with textbook examples of the appropriate or inappropriate use of force, but real-life scenarios involving quick decisions. There are many arrest and non-arrest scenarios where officers need to use force to protect self or others; and the degree of force required may be greater than what a disinterested observer would assume. Another recurrent issue in debates about police brutality is that racial bias appears to be a motive behind police brutality. When one considers that minorities are disproportionately likely to be arrested and convicted of crimes, one would expect to find a disproportionate number of minorities among those alleging police brutality. Although I should know by now, I cannot help but think that there has been an overwhelming amount of police brutality in recent years. Police brutality can be defined as, when a police officer uses more force than necessary. This issue has spread throughout the United States of America, and is putting the lives of our citizens in great danger. Police brutality is not only physical, but it can also be verbal attacks; and, in most cases, it is caused by false arrest and racial profiling due to police corruption. Police brutality has been and continues to be a major concern in society and it is used very loosely to any and all forms of police misconduct. Whereas, in reality, excessive force of police misconduct is what defines police brutality. The jobs of a police officer are too calmly resolve public disturbance and disputes. Police officers are supposed to protect citizens; instead they are hurting and using excessive force. It is not right and it is unjust for a police officer to hurt a citizen due to an assumption without any actual proof of criminal activity.

The mass media, and to a greater extent, social media, has been pumping out more and more reports about the fatalities that officers have caused and the one commonality between all the fatalities, is that predominantly black people are being killed by police officers. Through the increased reporting and increased activism from the Black Lives Matter movement, there has been a perception that the use of force is extreme and a common occurrence. There has been a lack of evidence showing that this is true, but for a fact, black people have been oppressed in the United States and the remnants of the oppression remain evident. Thus police who have a reputation for practicing racial profiling, which is highly debatable, creates a separation between law enforcement and the community. Through the heavily politicized and reported case of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, the line between the community and police have divided the two groups, allowing misinformation to be said of both sides (Wasilewski and Olson, 2014) At the same time, demonizing police officers for their actions and creating a generalization for a group of people who protect and serve, but also wear a badge and a uniform, labeling them as abusive racists.
