Murderers usually have something mentally wrong or have a motive; what if a movie was inspiration for a murderer? Movies today have increased on the violence shown in them and this can be a serious problem. This can lead to an outbreak of violent crimes in our society. In Arline Kaplan's article Violence in the Media: What Effects on Behavior? she talks about the effects media violence has on viewers. Violence in movies should be moderated, shown through the stories of James Holmes and Thierry Jaradin.
Violence in movies needs to be decreased. When has it been okay to promote violence? We want to teach our kids that violence is never the answer. Then why have children watch movies that show violence in a presumptuous way? Statistics show that violence has reduced in the last 10 years, but the rate of violent crimes is still too high. Kaplan says, “Nearly two-thirds of TV programs contain some physical violence”(Kaplan). Any type of violence can play a role in the mental corruption of a person. The physical violence can take the biggest toll on someone. If someone watches physical violence from a movie, they could

Thierry Jaradin is a 24 year old trucker driver that was a fan of the scream trilogy's. He has his own long black robe and “scream” mask for his own enjoyment. One day his neighbor Alisson Cambier went over to Jaradins house to return some videotapes and to talk. After he opens the door to Cambier, he tries to make a move on her. She turns him down and that set him off. Jaradin excuses himself for a minutes, and while Cambier is waiting at the door he decides to get his robe, mask, and a knife. While Cambier is not looking, Jaradin grabs her covers her mouth and stabs her thirty times. Once he was done with his rampage, Jaradin calls Cambiers father to confess. He tells the police that this was premeditated and his motive was from the scream
Fact: viewing violence can cause children to experience aggressive attitudes and behaviors. Children and teens often are affected by the people they surround themselves with. This can often include the celebrities or characters that they see on screen. Many people look up to the heroic actions of these characters but they also take away some violent habits as well. Some may say that since it provides 'heart-to-heart' and points that teen relate to the article “Hollywood Filmmakers Should Not be Villianized for Movie Violence” is more persuasive. This is not true. The article “Hollywood, Stop Exposing our Kids to Violence!” is more persuasive and is better proven with facts because it uses reliable statistics and has reasoning the many parents can relate to.
On average an American is exposed to approximately 200,000 violent acts before the age of eighteen. However, these exposures do not influence an individual to exhibit violence. Concerns regarding whether television and video game violence has a negative effect on society by promoting violence, dates back to the 1950’s and is still prevalent today. Studies and research conducted on the issue are unable to prove that the two variables have any correlation to each other. In fact, statistics demonstrate how the amount of violent crimes has decreased significantly throughout time despite growing video game popularity. Lastly, in society people look for anything to transfer the blame, especially in regards to a situation that may threaten an individual’s society. As a matter of fact, by reviewing the extensive research the conclusion was drawn stating exposure has no effect on violence. Therefore, television and video game violence does not have a negative effect on society.
When it comes to the topic of violent media, some of us would readily agree it’s a controversial subject as to whether kids should or shouldn’t be exposed to it. This is because many children who view violent media react negatively rather than not being affected at all. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of what effects does it have on children. Whereas some are convinced that it is a healthy alternative for kids to express themselves, others maintain that it causes kids to become more aggressive and contributes to juvenile crimes.
The article “Violence As Fun” by Randall Sullivan brings up this issue, arguing that parents need to be educated on the dangers of allowing their children to watch violent TV programs. The author supports this with evidence from a report conducted by The American Psychological Association, where they concluded that early substance abuse, access to weapons, isolation, and widespread display of violence in media; the latter being greater, contributes to the violent behaviors in adolescents. He also points out that since the 1950s, aggravated assaults have increased seven times. The passage further emphasizes that many TV outlets know the damaging effects that violence in media has on juveniles, yet only a few acknowledge this fact. Sullivan’s
Research shows gun violence appears in movies can lead children to obtain aggressive behavior (Bushman 2013: 1017). In high-grossing movies, violence contents display more than twice in one hours (Cieply 2013). Furthermore, perpetrators have seen to dress up as some characters in movies ( Bushman 2013: 1015). James Holmes dressed
Engaging yourself with homicidal, murderous, and vicious media leads to an increase in aggression, lack of empathy, and it desensitizes you to violence. Researchers have found immense evidence supporting the thought that high levels of violence in movies, television, and other media induce mental illness and disturbed behaviors. When children are exposed to brutal actions they start to blur the line between reality and fantasy. It is proven that “ ‘The amount of gun violence shown in PG-13 films have more than tripled since 1985’ ” (pg 29 paragraph 4). Children model what they see. When young children see people murdering each other in a video game, it desensitizes them into thinking it is okay. To what extent are we going to allow ourselves
There is no question that television and films these days are filled with violence and antisocial behavior. Virtually every show, movie or news story nowadays has some sort of violent theme. Studies have shown that for every hour of television, there are 6 violent exchanges shown, and this number increases to 14 exchanges an hour
Living in a world full of crime and violence, people begin to wonder what the cause of the violence is and how it can then be prevented. Unfortunately, there is not a single root cause that can be found when people attempt to decipher why children are deciding to bring guns to school and murder their peers. Some may believe that it was influenced by being exposed to a hostile family, violent films, or gory video games. Although sometimes this might be the case, a lot of the time it is not as black and white, making this topic very difficult to analyze and understand. Both Jonathan L. Freedman in “Villain or Scapegoat? Media Violence and Aggression” and L Rowell Huesmann and Laramie D. Taylor in “The Role of Media Violence in Violent
Whether it’s a story on the news or a drama at the theatre, violence has become a social norm in the media. Today, companies have significantly relied on the use of violence to ensure that their audiences are still motivated to watch. According to the Media Education Foundation, the level of violence on prime time television has increased 167% since 1998. Although there is a widespread belief that watching fictional violence causes people to become violent, the rise of violence on TV compared to real-world crime statistics over the past 20 years tells a different story.
This leads to lack of sympathy for victims of violence, notably in children. The surgeon general, National Health Institute and other professional medical organizations such as the American Medical Association and American Psychological Association have linked exposure to media violence to societal violence. The author argues that these studies may not be of considerable importance to claim that media violence is a public health risk. There other factors that are of more concern for societal violence such as being male or female, socioeconomic status, and intelligence. More research needs to be done before arguing media violence has a role in societal violence. I chose this article because it associates societal violence with the film industry. We see how different members of the film industry respond after a violent school shooting committed by an adolescent male. It shows opposing views of whether or not media violence affects behaviour, stating that the general public doesn’t believe it plays a role in
Most experts contend that violent television shows, video games, and toys promote aggression and destructive behavior. Rhodes (2000) states, “The American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Institutes of Mental Health say that there is a link between entertainment and violence. In fact, no direct, causal link between exposure to mock violence in the media and subsequent violent behavior has ever been demonstrated…” (p. 555). While violence in entertainment is pervasive and a real concern; it needs to be understood and addressed rather than blamed as the cause. After all, it is possible seek solutions to minimize violence when you understand the nature of
Violence in the media negatively affects society by promoting violent behavior, and leaving long lasting impacts in adulthood and children such as desensitization and aggression and should be regulated by the United States to be prevented. These effects are caused by viewing an excessive amount of violent media throughout childhood. Typically, the long lasting effects are most noticeable early into adulthood but can be present in children and teens. To prevent these negative impacts that violence in the media is having on American society, the United States should regulate the amount of violence that can be put into the media.
Children view violence in different ways when they watch it on television, whether it is cartoons or a type of drama and action programming. After children have watched these television shows, they may have interpreted the meaning into a negative behavior. It could influence them by becoming aggressive, afraid of the world that surrounds them, or it may lead to confusion. When it is said that children may become confused because their parents teach that violence is wrong. When they view someone in a “superhero” position participating in violence, they may see that as it is all right for the simple fact the good person does the action. According to the American Academy of Children and Adolescent Psychiatry, “the impact of TV violence may be immediately evident in the child's behavior or may surface years later (AACAP, 2011).”
According to E.F Dubow and L.S Miller, authors of Television Violence and Aggressive Behavior: Social Science Perspectives on Television, “Ignoring consequences of violence (including the pain of victims, the victims’ families, and the families of perpetrators) or depicting the consequences unreasonably sets in motion a destructive encoding process.” There could be found a direct correlation between aggressive behavior and violence witnessed on television. The more violence watched, the more desensitized a viewer would become. Dubow and Miller further state “viewers become [fearful] and begin to identify with the aggressors and the aggressors’ solutions to various problems.” It is this identification that causes violent behaviors to become encoded in the person’s mind when exposed to repeated violent acts. The person may then come to see the world as a bleak and sinister place. Along with this
In the book Critique of Violence ,author Walter describes Violence as "The intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, which either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, male development, or deprivation .The violence that is portrayed in the media has been debated for decades ,and it has rose a question about how does it influence the youth?. From movies to video games society has been accustom to seeing violence in their everyday entertainment. Since children are easy to be influence by their environment, it is safe to say that violence in the media can and will contribute to violent behavior.
