On 4-30-18, Educationally Related Mental Health Services (ERMHS) specialist, Anna Komperda, interviewed Ewan's mother, Ashten Barber. (Mr. Barber was not available for the interview). Mrs. Barber reported her main concern is Ewan's difficulty verbalizing his feelings. Mrs. Barber stated, "Ewan has a hard time verbalizing his feelings when he is upset, however, has made improvements over the past few months."
Mrs. Barber reported she and her husband moved their family from Utah to California last May of 2017. Mrs. Barber reported this transition was particularly hard for Ewan since upon moving to a new state, she and her husband had to spend more time away from home than usual. Mrs. Barber reported Ewan is used to being with his parents and brother, so when the family was not spending as much time together, Ewan naturally reacted.
Mrs. Barber reported upon moving to California, Ewan attended the same daycare since he was 6 weeks old. Mrs. Barber stated, "There were incidents that occurred there with Ewan, but nothing was ever documented." "Typically he got in trouble for hitting another student or teacher." Mrs. Barber stated, "No, now he has tantrums about once a week." Mrs. Baber reported Ewan's tantrums are usually triggered by being told "no." Mrs. Barber reported typically it takes Ewan about 5 minutes to calm down. ERMHS inquired how Mrs. Barber manages Ewan's tantrums? Mrs. Barber reported if Ewan is really escalated she will have him take a time-out and then attempt to inquire how he was feeling. Mrs. Barber reported Ewan's behaviors typically occur when they are in a store. Mrs. Barber stated, "He will wander off on his own because he wants to be independent like his brother." Mrs. Barber stated, "We approach this situation by telling him what the consequences are ahead of time." Mrs. Barber reported Ewan usually responds well to these
