The story is about Ember, an underground city threatened by ageing infrastructure. The young protagonist, Lina Mayfleet, and her friend, Doon Harrow, follow clues left behind by the original builders of the City of Ember, to safety in the outside world. Lina's messenger job makes her care about Ember's problems in a way that she didn't before. When the seven-minute blackout goes down, Lina freaks out. Suddenly, everyone seems to be just a little bit in danger, and she notes that “Fear had settled over the city. Lina felt it like a cold chill. She understood now that Doon had been speaking the truth on Assignment Day. Ember was in grave danger.” It's thanks to her messenger job that Lina is able to change her mind and start struggling toward a solution to Ember's problems. Doon is usually thinking about something serious or focusing on some important task. In the story, he is constantly characterized as it. Doon Harrow is …show more content…
For example, The river. It, running under Ember gets very named in the first chapter, as one of the big reasons Lina doesn't want to get a Pipeworks position on Assignment Day. But the thing is, Lina has never seen the river before in her life. She just knows about it. Which reminds us of the fact that just about everyone in Ember is only partially aware of the things that are central to their lives. They know the sky is always dark, but they don't know it's because they're living underground. They know that electricity works, they just don't know how. They know they can grow things in the greenhouses by applying light and water, but they don't know why life can come from a seed. The fact that the people of Ember don't actually know how they're surviving puts them in a tight spot. They rely on the river for power and use the generator to get that power. But if the generator finally breaks down, they won't know how to rig another solution in order to continue living in their
And this tells me he is scared sometimes and that tells me that Doon can still get scared. The first example that he was scared that he could not save Ember because he soon found out that fixing the generator was harder to fix then he thought. The second example to show the Doon was scared was when he thought one of the black outs would last forever. The last example to show that doon was afraid was when he thought that the instructions would not lead out of Ember but would lead to a death
Since the seventh mayor lost the box with the instructions, the people in Ember are still trapped in the

The day started like that of any other these last couple of weeks. Mysterious incidents kept popping up in the news, of small groups going mad and becoming savage. Life was like that in Lampeter. Very little going on in town, whilst the whole world around us lives with a constant stream of danger. Some people were getting worried, afraid it was some sort of virus going around, but that happens all the time. One small case of a disease and the world’s in an epidemic. Happened with bird flu, E-coli, and we had just got over the joys of swine flu. Now this. Some people were becoming wary, uneasy around other people, fears of catching this mystery virus afflicting the nation and forcing its way into people’s minds. The unfortunate thing was,
Doon is one of the main characters in the story, City of Ember. Doon’s personality is described as being very strong and serious, with dark hair and dark eyes. For example, DuPrau describes, “ His hair looked rumbled, as if he hadn't combed it for a while. He had dark, thick eyebrows, which made him look serious at the best of times and, when he was anxious or angry, came together to form a straight line across his forehead,” (page five and six). This quotation is used to describe how Doon’s outside appearance is seen by others Doon is a dynamic character in the sense that at the beginning of the story you believe that is a angry, immature kid, but as the story starts to progress, we start to see that he truly cares about fixing his city and
Throughout the story, you find that this isn’t the first time that the narrator endangered Doodle’s life, such as the time when he tried to suffocate him early on in the story. “I began to make plans to kill him by
Almost twenty minutes had passed since Epsilon, Sabra and Malessica left the pub. Malessica was a bit upset thinking about innocent people who were hurt during the attack on the pub. Though she knew she didn’t have time to help the injured, she decided to try and forget about it, continuing to follow Epsilon. Malessica noticed Sabra, seemed a bit lost in thought, but she didn’t say a word. Moving towards an unknown destination, four police cars sped down the street past them, with sirens blaring. Malessica put her hands on her hood, covering her ears, waiting for the cars to pass them. Epsilon turned his head back, watching the police cars. He was upset knowing he wouldn’t be able to work there again.
On page 347 it says “When the brother told the younger brother to shut up, I’m not going to hurt you.” That gave the other character probably a weird feeling. Then as you read on to page 354 when it says “He was sitting on the ground, his face buried in his arms which were resting on his drawn up knees.” This can show physical emotions because the brother that can do everything normal people can do acts like everything's okay but Doodle just have to live while being different. In a short fable called “The Stag at the Pool” can also show an example of the unnamed character and Doodle. In the text it says “The Stag betook himself to flight, and kept himself with ease at a safe distance from the Lion, until he entered a wood and became entangled with his horns.” The Stag is almost like the narrator he doesn't care about the Lion or in this case Doodle..he prefers to stay away from him and teach him to do things that people like him can't
Doodle is described by his brother, since his brother is narrating in first person. By the description of Doodle, he characterizes determination, love, willpower, dedication, and perseverance in every activity he participates in, which gives a very positive outlook on his personality. Doodle shows that he will do anything for his brother since he is his best friend. “When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn't walk, so I set out to teach him” (49). Doodle doesn't think he will be capable at first, however, since he thinks his brother is doing this out of the good in his heart, he pushes through all the pain.
At the end of book one we see Mckenna leave doon, to go pursue her lifelong dreams of becoming an actress. Although, she fell in love in Doon with the prince Duncan she thought her life would be better off without him. Kenna had began to think that she’d never be happy in Doon because they didn’t have a theatre or place to perform. In life nothing is certain and Jamie, Mckenna and Vee all had to learn that the hard way. Their dreams did not come true in the way they thought nor planned it would. In the the end it truly showed us that we will never how things will truly turn out we can always guess like they did throughout the book but still nothing will ever be certain. In conclusion Doon shows us that we won’t always be right thing in everything in our future but sometimes that can be a good thing, like it was for the characters in the
Moira Young describes her discovery of herself being a stronger individual when she writes, “Don’t move! I yell. I run in front of the boat. I aim my bow right between his eyes. Hands up! I says.” (Young 108). This quote describes how Saba now has to act as she is the older dominance and now must protect and lead Emmi. Saba would never speak up and stand up against someone else before because Lugh would always do it for her, but since Lugh was gone she must evolve into someone who must stand up. Emmi learns that instead of always being a hindrance to her older siblings, she can be a great assist to Saba. Lugh learns what people outside of Silverlake are really like. After meeting up with Saba for the first time since he was kidnapped, his first reaction reads “No, he says. It’s more’n that. It’s . . . you. You’ve changed, Saba. Guess we’ll jest hafta git to know each other all over agin.” (Young
Doodle shows from the beginning that he is abnormally special and determined. Doodle was expected to die very young, he looked like an old man all head and no body. Everyone thought Doodle was a big disappointment except Aunt Nicey who knew he would live since he was born in a caul, or membrane enclosing a baby at birth. Dad had a little mahogany coffin built for Doodle anyway, which now sits up in the barn loft covered in Paris green, and has an owl nest built inside of it. One day Doodle and his brother went up into the barn loft to see the casket.

According to the narrator, the malevolence he showed doodle was rooted in the love he felt for him. From the
In The City of Ember, Doon is more fixated. He lets everyone in the class know how much trouble Ember is in on page 13. This shows that he is fixated because he is determined to save the city from despair. He also doesn’t care what other people think of him and is independent, as he made this outburst in front of the mayor.
