Photography and Journalism: A Combined Assignment
“This week’s assignment,” began my photography teacher, Mr. Beseau, “is to take a portrait of a person using the knowledge you have previously learned. Okay, time to go!” I scooped up my cloth binder and began walking back to the brightly lit 8th grade homeroom. Who would be the subject of my photo? Where should I take it? I had many questions but few answers. While left to ponder my options, I began to pack up my cyan backpack. It felt extra full from all the journals I was carrying. I wouldn’t be able to plan today; there was much to do for literature class. Two days later, I was confident that I had at least a few days before I needed to work out what to do. I walked into the ELA

We were going to create a display of colorful drumsticks using tempera paint. The artwork would represent how our individual personalities came together as a class by creating a collage of our brightly painted drumsticks. I turned on my black desktop monitor and opened a word processor. With quiet jazz music playing in the background, I typed up a quick outline detailing what I would need to write for journalism and the styles of outfits required for shooting the accompanying portrait. Then, I started drafting my article using the notes from my phone call with Macy, as well as the outline. Sentences started flooding the screen with details on what the project would be. I slept that night in my sea blue bedroom surrounded by a mountain of blankets. My plan was going smoothly. The following morning at school, I talked to a couple of students that lived relatively nearby to me. Namely, I asked Derrick, Zane, and Zeke for their help in the photo shoot. Given their relatively flexible schedules, I was happy to note that they all agreed to bring clothes for the outfit. Derrick even agreed to be the subject of the picture. Throughout the day, I traversed the white halls of the school, learning all that was to learn in literature, algebra, and physics. During the last two periods of the day, I stayed at homeroom to work on the drumstick project. The harsh scent of tempura paint invaded my nostrils. All of my
Nearly everybody has thought about writing as a career or a hobby, and it’s simple when you really put the time into it because these skills, like creativity are easy improving skills. Most successful journalists have great creativity and writing skills, especially in the current age when journalists are actually writing award-winning novels, like John Sandford, my father’s favorite author and more famously Mark Twain.
Another significant reason that has played a vital role in photojournalism of recent times is the emergence of imaging technologies. Imaging technologies has undoubtedly played a major part in the works of a photojournalist today. Based on earlier accounts on how photography itself is an inherent manipulation, the question is no longer directed on how has imaging technologies manipulate photojournalism' but how much more has imaging
Photojournalism is different from other types of photography since the photojournalist’s job is to document a real story throughout the photo with a high level of journalistic honesty. A documented photograph is delivered to the public as a complement to the written article. Therefore the photojournalist is not considered as an artist but as a reporter.
The fresh faces of the 2016-2017 sophomore AP English class looked up at Mrs. Belles, some expectantly, some apprehensively. Among those faces is Francine Lamasko, a girl of 15 years of age, newly refreshed from summer and carrying her completed summer work. Decidedly, she thinks to herself, this will be a meaningful year of learning, of growth, and of fun. She is ready.
Good Evening Everyone! I am McCall Radavich with USA Today. Although I am currently located in New York, I was born and raised in Arizona. At a very young age, I found my passion in writing and photography. I have literally been writing my story for as long as I can remember. When it came time for college, I chose one of the best journalism schools in the United States, the University of Iowa. I started small, taking pictures for the school’s newspaper, The Daily Iowan. I soon worked my way up to being an Opinions Writer, then a Metro Reporter, and finally my senior year, an editor. After graduating with a double major in journalism and geography in 2005, I got a yearlong internship with National Geographic. You know how you look back on moments of your life and think, that’s when it all changed? Well, that was it for me. That was my moment, the year I found myself. Writing isn’t an easy thing. Actually, I would say writing is the hardest thing a person can do, putting your self on display for any and all to see. Writing is the truth, and the truth hurts. I had always thought that was what I did when I wrote, tell the truth, but that wasn’t the case. I hadn’t learned how to write without boundaries until that summer, when I had no other option. I hadn’t known how to write like everything was on the line, because I had never had anything to lose. Now, it’s the only way I write. It is the only way I can. When my year was up, I didn’t know what to do with
Today is the day, the day I would get the paper I worked so hard on back. It is a chilly fall morning as I walked to my AP Literature classroom. The classroom was full of vibrant colors that match my teacher’s fiery red hair, various pug pictures, and a shelf jam-packed with Mr. Potato heads. Mrs. Grimes, my teacher, is loud, impolite, and to say this nicely, she is an overweight older woman. I hate going to her class every day, nothing I ever do is good enough for her, she hates me all because I am quiet. So, I am very apprehensive about what grade I had received on this paper.
"Journalism isn't just writing," Clara said to the student audience, describing the 'wide scope' of tasks in her typical day. From flicking through social media, keeping up with gossip, and compiling opinions on a recent trend, Clara has a range of articles to present to her readers.
The low ceiling cowered above and the black plastic chairs formed a restless crowd around me. From my seat, I could smell the acute scent of cleaning fluid, whiteboard markers, and the nauseating perfume of the girl sitting next to me. Like so many other students, she exuded concentration. Her brows were drawn as her hand moved rapidly over the testing booklet, only pausing to reposition herself or cast an almost imperceptible sidelong glance. The effortlessness of her actions furthered my anxiety as I began tapping my foot uneasily against the speckled linoleum floor. Through the dusty shades that hung precariously in front the only window in the room, I could see the outline of a solitary building shadowed by the dense gray fog that clung to the courtyard outside. At that moment, I would have given anything to be able to run and scream at the top of my lungs. I had an inexplicable urge to break free from the confinement of that room and what it
Northwestern has one of the most prestigious journalism programs in the country, and I am confident that Northwestern is the school that will allow me to become the best journalist I can be. This will be done with the help of the programs and clubs offered at Northwestern.
I was also given writing opportunities like drafting a commentary piece and a media alert. I had problems adjusting to the writing technique and tone of the media alert as I had to follow the client’s way of writing. Reading through previous examples of media alerts helped me to understand the purpose, writing technique and their tone that helped me to draft out the piece easily. Despite the challenges, this opportunity enabled me
The low continuous hum of air flowing through the ducts lured me into an embracing sense of calm. The rhythmic tapping of fingers dancing over keyboards around me, set ablaze by the firing neurons of new, rather, incomplete thoughts, pulled me closer to a sea of prolific understandings. The sweet odor of archaic hardbound books filled the air, coupled with the college stench of AXE body spray and cheap, overly-pungent perfume gagged my sensitive lungs. But the pain, oh the great pain of near-silence you find in the library is one which I will never forget. I have since grown accustomed to the odor of books on shelves since articulating into the college curriculum, a sensory assault that had laid absent to my past. I have mixed emotions about
Ever since I was seven I knew I wanted to be be a Broadcast Journalist, I also knew that I was an exceptional writer. Therefore, after graduating from The Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University with a Bachelors of Arts in Journalism in the fall of 2019, I plan to return back to my hometown of Charlotte, NC, and begin to change lives through news and media. After gaining experience and advise on my reporting style, I plan to inspire other young girls to embrace the gift of writing by starting a non-profit organization that teaches basic writing and journalism skills. My ultimate goal is to take everything I have learned apply it as I work as a White House Correspondent.
Michael you have a pass to go to Mr Culp's room. Those eleven words would start a journey, I didn't know it then but that day I was finally going to find what I wanted to do for a living. When I entered the class three more communication club members were already in the room. Mr Culp sat us down and said he needed two photographers for our school olympics which were just team based games and it was normally the grades vs one another and the teachers . One of the kids was participating in the olympics so he couldn't the other girl didn't want to mess up the photos since communication club was a video club and she never done any kind of photography and these picture might appear in the year book and she was really afraid to mess up, me on the other hand I did not want to be stuffed in the hot bleachers. So I was the first one to volunteer I was one of the main camera men so I knew how to zoom in and start and from the basics of what Mr Culp's Crash course the other student an old friend Emily had also decided to volunteer during the

What is a photograph? The simplicity of taking a photograph leads many to ponder its artistic value. Yet, it is undeniable that there are some photos that cause an emotional reaction deeper than simply observing a recorded point in time. Surely, there are photographs that cause more reaction than some modern art pieces. There seems to be two types of photographs. The first classification is the ‘time capture’ photo – an image with the sole purpose of recording a particular event or point in time. The second nature of a photo carries a ‘deeper meaning,’ which has the ability to change the observer’s mood and cause a reaction. But what distinguishes these two varieties? There are a
