Australia is a very diverse, multi-cultural nation with the majority of the population having migrated from Asia, Africa and Europe. Almost every single home in Australia has a television and almost every single Australian watches free-to-air television daily.
Australia has been a culturally diverse society since long before white settlement. The indigenous people had many different cultures, languages and customs, even members of the First Fleet came from a number of culturally significant backgrounds. Diversity in Australia took large strides 67 years ago with the beginning of the Snowy River Scheme which promoted skilled immigrants to come here and work, because as a nation just after World War II we lacked the manpower and knowledge to complete such a large and complicated project.
Ever since the 1970s Australia has welcomed people from all cultures and prides itself of being a multicultural nation. It is now one of the most culturally diverse countries on the planet with almost half of all Australians either born overseas or have at least one parent who was. The basic norms that make a multicultural society like Australia's possible are human rights. They are the standards that guide interactions between people which encourage mutual respect and equality. However there are groups and individuals in Australia who deviate away from these norms and do not treat those from other cultures with the respect and dignity they are entitled to.
Culture is always changing. Beliefs, behaviours and presentation, religion and language all form part of what is an individual’s or community’s culture. (Bowes, Grace, & Hodge, 2012, p.75 & 77). Due to its intrinsic nature, when people migrate to Australia, they bring their culture with them. As migrants come from all over the world, and not the one place, their
Funnily enough, all cities have at least one Chinese restaurant or café and it definitely plays a significant part in multiculturalism in Australia.
The identity of Australians from foreigner or outsider perspective is based on perceptions, stereotypes, hearsay, and experiences different people have had while visiting or staying in Australia for work or school. Identity is closely linked to cultural and social aspects of society, where certain beliefs, values, and behaviours, are subscribed to by the said community or society. A sense of belonging to people, to individuals, families, communities, and nations is provided by identity. I am writing this letter today to show my reasons for why I agree with multiculturalism and why it is good for a country to embrace multiculturalism. We are a multicultural country; our policy embraces our shared values and cultural traditions. My home, my country allows others who choose to call this country their home and have the right to practise and share their cultural beliefs, traditions and languages without the fear of being discriminated. Those who arrive in Australia are invited to continue to celebrate their cultures within a broader culture of freedom but, more importantly, with respect. However, if there is any inconsistency between these values and individual freedom and the rule of law, then these Australian values win out
Australia’s census provides incredible detail to the specific race, origin, religious orientation, and even breaks down the financial health of the population. While each region/state has a concise breakdown of each ethnicity, Aboriginal people are in a separate ethnic group altogether (see tables below). Their classification process gives way to several immediate flaws and opens the floodgates to racial taxonomy. Religious affiliation, place of birth, language spoken, and cultural tradition for the purpose of ethnic identification. Additionally, the native Aboriginal people are accounted for in a separate category of the Australian population.
Australia is a settler nation which is now made up of many ethnic groups who share similar cultural traditions, common language, shared history and a shared identity (ABS, 2016). These groups contribute to what is referred to multiculturalism. Australia has a higher proportion of people born overseas than the US, Canada and the UK, with 49% of Australia’s population (or a parent) being born overseas (Census of Population and Housing, 2016). Compared to other Western nations, Australia has one of the most diverse immigration populations (Collins, 2013, p. 145). The meaning of multiculturalism in Australia has changed significantly over time. Today, Australia is a culturally and ethnically diverse country and therefore is a multicultural society. In terms of public policy, multiculturalism can be defined as policies and practices implemented by the Australian government that aim to manage cultural diversity to benefit the whole of society (Department of Social Services, 2014). Although Australia is a multicultural society, there are criticisms of public policy surrounding multiculturalism.
Australia has always been a multicultural country, the first immigrants that came to Australia were the British in 1788. During this phase of European settlement various policies were created to address cultural diversity. One of the most infamous policies was that of assimilation that forced Australian Aboriginal people and migrants to give up their own culture and heritage and assimilate to colonial Australian culture. Eventually this policy was revised to Multiculturalism. That as a policy in Australia refers to handling the ramifications of diversity, bearing in mind that all Australians have the right to a cultural identity, all citizens must be able to express their cultural inheritance. Whether Multiculturalism is advantageous for Australia or not is a very controversial topic. There is a side that argues that multiculturalism could threaten the lifestyle of many Australians. On the other hand, research demonstrates that from an Australian perspective it has been mostly advantageous. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of multiculturalism in Australia, with regard to economical, historical and social perspectives.
Australia is a multicultural nation because people from many different countries live here. Immigrants are an important part of the development of our nation. Many immigrants have come from Vietnam, Ireland, Italy, Greece and many more. One country in particular is the Chinese. The Chinese have played an important role for the country with their food, celebrations, traditions and skills.
Since the early years of European settlement, Australia has developed as a diverse multicultural society. Today, 23 percent of Australians were born in another country and just over 25 percent of the population have at least one parent born overseas. All these people have brought their food habits to Australia, which has resulted in the expansion of the diet of all Australians. As people migrated here, they brought their traditional food habits, preparation techniques and cooking methods with them. They then had to adapt these to the foods available within Australia.
The first governor of Western Australia, for example, wrote in 1835 that Aboriginal people ‘must gradually disappear’ as settlers increased in number, and neither British actions ‘nor the most anxious and judicious measures of the local government [could] prevent the ulterior Extinction of that Race’
