We have an authority to benefit ourselves. Someone has to make resolutions and that is authority. Authority keeps society running properly and fixes problems, but authority is not always right. An opinion about this topic is that we should disobey authority if it’s wrong. The idea that disobeying authority when it’s wrong or you disagree with its choices is incorrect. Disobeying authority is never the solution but we should not blindly follow either. Authority is an important part of our society and it becomes useless if ignored. Authority is not always right though and people of authority as well as the general public should listen to the opinions and ideas of experts. If authority does not listen to experts or the opinions of the people, authority will begin to be looked down upon. If it continues and the current authoritative body needs to be replaced there should be a process for it. Authority rules over people and is required. Authority allows for people with differences to work together and makes society and systems work smoothly. A person cannot over rule authority because authority rules over them. Socrates, speaking as the Laws, says, “Then since you have been born and brought up and educated, can you deny, in the first place, that you were our child and servant, both you and your ancestors?” (Page 583) We have a debt to authority. Today we are not so forcefully controlled by this debt but it is still there. Authority has allowed us to work, to have a home, and to
Authority means the right or power to enforce rules or give orders. To do this they need legislations to enforce their laws, to function properly the uniformed pubic services need to have legislations.
Authority is defined as the ‘power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience’. There are many different organisations that enforce discipline within the public services, which have the right to extend different levels of authority and enforce different levels of obedience within a service. These are;
Following authority is most noticed when it comes to military. Soldiers will do almost anything that their commander tells them. In a good way this is useful but when what they are doing is morally wrong there should be boundaries. But there are none and if they don’t do what they are told then they have to face the punishment. But
The essays that comprise Traditional Classics on Leadership present varying notions of authority and of challenging authority. This is largely due to the fact that this manuscript is comprised of essays from 31 contributors, ranging from well-known political theorists to some of the more salient voices for individuality that the world has known. Still, there are some points of commonalities in these essays that present a synthesized viewpoint of the concept of challenging authority.
Authority is the power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience. In society it has been something you are taught as toddler to respect authority, your elders. There are plenty of rules that as children we follow because it has been enforced in our minds that those are the rules and we must follow them. The rules do not tend to be questioned until someone disobeys them and did not think their actions were wrong. It is then that we being to question authority and resist the majority rule. No matter how unfair the laws of the governments might seem, it does not change the fact that people in society obey them. Henry Thoreau, Stanley Milgram and Martin Luther King have all considered the reasons as to why we obey authority and what the struggles of resisting majority rule may be. As a society there has come times that people themselves disobey the law and even in The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, the people being to resist authority. Authority may play a major role in society but when people being to come to a realization of the rules that are unjust, they being to resist and protest against them.
Right now, the society that we all live in secretly oppresses the people and is slowly taking away our freedoms, yet we do not notice it. In a controlled environment, the one who holds power is usually the most corrupt and conceitful one of the group. Power and authority may seem like an easy stick to wield, but unfortunately, that is not the case. With great power comes great responsibility is a quote that echoes this predicament. Though power and authority may seem like it is an almighty power to behold, only a minute amount of people carry it, while the majority live under it. If a majority gets upset or aggravated over the misuse of power and authority, a rebellion is bound to happen. Freedom is the sweet nectar that many throughout history

Authority cannot exist without obedience. Society is built on this small, but important concept. Without authority and its required obedience, there would only be anarchy and chaos. But how much is too much, or too little? There is a fine line between following blindly and irrational refusal to obey those in a meaningful position of authority. Obedience to authority is a real and powerful force that should be understood and respected in order to handle each situation in the best possible manner.
Today our society raises us to believe that obedience is good and disobedience is bad. We are taught that we should all do what we’re told and that the people that are disobedient are almost always bad people. Society tells us this, but it is not true. Most people will even be obedient to the point of causing harm to others, because to be disobedient requires the courage to be alone against authority. In Stanley Milgram’s "Perils of Obedience" experiment, his studies showed that sixty percent of ordinary people would agree to obey an authority figure even to the point of severely hurting another human being. (Milgram 347).
Authority is the power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience. This can often be portrayed in many ways like an authority figure. In the play there are multiple characters that start with a strong sense of authority in given situations. The idea of having authority lead to some conflicting situations. However, at certain points some of the characters begin to lose their authority as the problems continue. Throughout The Crucible, the amount of authority and power one has is a concern due to the lying that occurs.
Firstly, he uses power of the fear such as the beast, bloodlust and he promises to protect them towards beast due to gain power, at the same time as he acquires power, he grows his power by break away from Ralph and taking advantage of the power of conformity. Therefore, most of children follow him instead of the original leader(Ralph). According to Asch’s experiment, observed behaviors of participants which conform to a wrong answer. This concept is also relevant to Lord of the Files, as the children are apt to survive together with group. When Jack breaks away from Ralp groups, most of them join his society to conform after all reason.
Authority is important for any leader or government, because that is how decisions are accepted as right. Sovereignty is the recognition by other states that one government has the authority to control a certain territory. As well as the acceptance of rule by the people
The article, “The Authoritarian Personality,” written by Erich Fromm discusses the common and different characteristics between the two forms of an authoritarian personality. He starts to explain how one becomes a mature person. He states that to become a mature person, said person needs to have developed love and reason. He then states that an authoritarian character has not reached maturity, and therefore, has not developed love or reason. Erich Fromm continues to explain that the difference between the ruler and the ruled is how they start to feel “greater.” The way the ruled feels “greater” is by depending on their ruler for guidance and by following the ruler to become a part of the larger group. The way the ruler feels “greater” is by depending on the ruled to continue to look at them as strong and powerful. He then points out that one person can hold both the ruler and the ruled characteristics. Erich Fromm continues to explain the differences between rational and irrational authority and where these two forms of authority are found. He ends by saying that the understanding of love and reason, and developing said characteristics is the foundation to a person’s own authority and political democracy. While reading this article, it brought me back to all the times I have dealt with people who have authoritative personalities and how it affected me. As stated by Erich Fromm, all people with authority personalities contain components of both the ruler and the ruled.
Legitimate authorities are when a person is using his or her tile, or position to ordered someone to do something to even though they don’t agree. Within legitimate authorities, you just do whatever you got told to do out of abeyance. For example, I know co-worker who hate to look at it and eat green pease from the bad experience a child. She said, her mother would say, no one leave the table until the plates are empty including the green pease. She said, will have forced herself to empty the plat, but only to get out of the table, walk into the bathroom and throw up. Now, she can’t eat or even look at green pease. To every child, mothers acting like they are in charged to give detraction and control wither a child should be eating green pease
The authority of an agent is the act which he is allowed or authorised to do by his principal, and which will bind his/her principal. Usually, the principal will only be bound by the act of the agent if the agent acts within his/her authority. There are two types of authority which an agent could rely on, namely actual authority and apparent or ostensible authority.
