Names are given by parents before or after children are born, and the names can vary depending on the ethnic group or culture that the person belongs to. Many people from all around the world immigrate to the United States every year, and one method that some of them use to fit in better into the American society is changing their names, which most of the time works. Immigrants that want to fit into American society should change their names because it can improve their labour market chances, and they could prevent discrimination.

Delving into this concept, if names don’t affect the quality of their works, why would authors use pseudonyms instead of their real names? There are several cases, from Charlotte Brontë to Stephen King, where authors chose a pen name for their own reasons. Some needed a fake name to compensate for their social status, some to protect their integrity, or just to express more of what they do best. Whatever the reason, authors throughout the ages have utilized the liberty of an alias to their advantage, spewing out ideas onto paper, and publishing volumes that were bound to make an impact.

In the poem “The Names,” by Billy Collins, the speaker is calmly recalling people’s last names alphabetically as he notices them wherever he goes. At first it seems as though he is playing a game to see how many names he can think of. After reading the whole poem several times, it becomes clear that he is referring to people who died on September 11th. Collins uses imagery, a serious tone, and similes throughout the poem to show appreciation for the memory of the victims that died that tragic day.

Everyone is given a name when they are born. Their name will become the most important part of their lives. With a name people can identify each other and can gain status and fame through name. Without a name nobody will know who is who or how to identify each other. Not only are names important to each individual 's, every name has some sort of power with it. Names can also be soiled and be ruined with a bad reputation. Everything can be determined by a name. The characters in the play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller have a lot of pride. Many are good citizens and have good names. John Proctor is a good citizen who has good morals and tries to do the right things. He has built up a lot of respect for his name. Danforth, the judge, also tries to protect his name by making the right decisions and not back down from them. In The Crucible, Miller uses John Proctor and Judge Danforth to show what some people are willing to do to protect their name because their name are a very powerful and important weapon that can support their life.

Names identify who we are. Thousands of different writers use pen names. This means they go by a different name. They do this because of many different reasons. Those reasons include discrimination, hate, and biased publishers.

With time goes on, everyone switches their name to English just because they want to give a better impression to others. Using English name means they follow the mainstream tightly. It is like Spanish people hide their real identity to follow the mainstream. However, it is a necessary step for people to live better lives in this world. As Yoshino mentions, “To cover is tone down a disfavored identity to fit into the mainstream.”(552)

Privacy is widely desired all over the world. After authors feel the rush of fame and the set backs of being only one, they tend to change their name for an even better shot at success. Other authors aren’t respected as who they are so they change their names appearance for a higher success rate. Pen names are one of the smartest ways to give authors the best writing experience possible. I personally would enjoy to one day change my name and become someone no one knew. To become a blank canvas yet to create.
