HOMEWORK #6
In the article “What Should The Government Pay For? Autopsies And Lighthouses!” the author discussed the topic of the government spending money on diverse investments like lighthouses and autopsies. The article, with a touch of sarcasm and irony touches important points that economists have studies over the years. They say that the government should spend money on public goods, something that we all need and that will make our lives better, but that the market will not and cannot provide. They discussed the previous mentioned public goods as examples of what could be a good way of spending money, but there are some other public goods that we hear about more often in political debates like: court systems, the military, etc. But
One example of a public good is national defense, which provides protection for everyone in the country. “It is considered impractical for individuals to defend themselves more than partially because aggressors may bring superior force to bear, thus making it necessary for the defender, too, to secure the help of others.” (Cooley) Because of this, the government provides defence as a public good. In the United States, for example, we have many sections of national defence. There is the army, marine corps, navy, air force, national guard, and coast guard, which all play vital roles in protecting our country. Another important public good is providing basic medical research. The United States funds research for many diseases and disorders, such as cancer research, and immunization research, and works to make them readily available to all those who need them. These are two of the many public goods the governments
In the novel The Dead, Gabriel Conroy, who is the nephew of Julia and Kate Morkan, is the main character of the story. One night he and his wife attended a party, which was given by his two aunts, and there were many other members in the party. The story revolves around their life and memories.Gabriel Conroy felt a blur between his soul and the dead. Some people died, but they are still alive because they have true love. Some people are alive, but they are still dead because they never love.I like the story for three reasons.
If the US economy were experiencing a market failure like under provision of public transport or education, the government would be advised to increase expenditure on these areas. In the end, this may lead to a rise in productivity, which in future, it will cause a high economic growth rate and increased tax revenues. Nevertheless, government spending does not necessarily cause a rise in productivity. The US government has promised to increase expenditure on NHS that is expected to orchestrate a rise in the economy. However, this sort of extended spending is uncertain to increase the rate of economic growth (Boyes & Melvin, 2008).
The definition of public goods is: A public good is an item consumed by society as a whole and not necessarily by an individual consumer. Public goods are financed by tax revenues. All public goods must be consumed
“Open ended benefit programs, funded by other people’s money” foster a ’something for nothing’ mentality, that is weakening America”, states Nicholas Eberstadt. The governments need to emphasize unemployment spending and help businesses that are failing, is driving the national debt up by the day (Clemmitt). “Government is what it spends” Allen Schick shares in Clemmitt’s article, but this statement is only factual if that government spends its money wisely.
In the sea they are happy because they have their freedom and are far away from the harsh reality of war on the land. As soon as the bodies come on the land the verbs become rougher and impersonal "rolls" and "tread"…the personification of the bodies stops as soon as
Public goods are one of the main types of market failures that the government often has the ability to solve. Public goods such as medical, education, and employments can be seen as market failures. An example of a public good would the post office. The government controls the majority of shipping and package delivery but also the ability to solve the problem of lost budgets annually and the increasing rates of shipping. The post office is a necessity and is failing based on the lost revenue every year. The post office is also losing its labor supply based on the loss income and profit. The government can allow for the post office to become publicly run where a profit can be made and allow for an oligopoly to keep prices low with removed competition. The government has the option of stepping out of the market and allowing it to grow within a free market system.
Spending and Revenue are divided into ten categories, such as Investments, General Government, etc. Choose three spending categories and one revenue category to write about. What decisions to spend or cut did you make in each of the categories that you chose? Explain your choices. Be sure to read the pro/con arguments for each decision. Which arguments did you find most convincing?
For example, in “Americans Think National Parks Are Worth Way More than We Spend on Them” it states that the NPS is overdue on maintenance projects that cost more than $12 billion that includes park infrastructure such as roads, bridges, campgrounds, trails and utilities, preventing forest fires, and repairing historical monuments and visitor facilities (Blimes and Loomis). This indicates that if more people were to invest in the NPS, the maintenance projects could be dealt with and people could enjoy the parks more efficiently. Also, in the same article, Blimes and Loomis write, “Ninetyfive percent said that protecting national parks for future generations was important, and 81 percent were willing to pay higher federal taxes to ensure that the park system was protected and preserved” (Blimes and Loomis). This illustrates why the NPS continues to do what is necessary to preserve the national parks. The NPS should be an invested in to keep the nation’s national parks wellpreserved and
Public Funding is the most common with the campaigns and are funds or resources provided by the State or Government for either political parties and/or candidates. It is argued that political parties and candidates should have equal access to these funds. Sadly public funding laws are not clearly stated, this leads to the misuse of these funds and resources throughout the entire campaign. “Direct public funding is given to political parties and/or candidates in the form of money – usually as bank transfers but at times in cash or cheque; Indirect public funding is when resources with a monetary value is provided by the Government to political parties and/or candidates (ace).” There are many arguments used against the public funding such as; it increases the distance between political elites and the supporters and voters. If the political parties or candidates don’t depend on their supporters, they might be less likely to involve them in party decisions or consult their opinions on policy issues. The public funding may make it more difficult for new political parties to gain representation. Also with public funds, the taxpayers are forced to support a candidate whose views that do not support. Unfortunately this is not setup for the supporters to choose if they want to donate money to the political party, but instead forced to donate the money for a candidate they particularly oppose. It is argued that public funds are taking money away from schools and hospitals to give to rich politicians. When public funding is introduced to the public, not many people agree with it because the public resources are scarce and are needed for schools and hospitals, and also used to fix roads or build new ones along with better salaries to staff members of these jobs. Some of the negatives to public funding seem grim but public funding is a natural and necessary cost of
Governments are funded in one of two ways, through taxation and loans. The government has the ability to borrow large amounts of money. It is advantageous since the government can react quickly by borrowing through the use of treasury notes and bonds when there is not enough private sector spending. They may sometimes step in to boost the economy. This spending can infuse much needed cash into the economy to avert some of the repercussions of a depression. It is here that the government must be very cautious in how and where the money is spent, since all spending will not necessarily lead to a positive or profitable income in the future. Another way to boost the economy is through funds that are invested in businesses and programs that spark economic activity such as job creation, which creates wages, which improve the standard of living, generate
Medieval China, as seen in the Stories from a Ming Collection, was characterized by distinct separations between men and women’s abilities, typical old fashioned family structure, and a desire to advance their social status. Throughout all the stories in this book, it dives deep into different aspects of how men and women are treated, how families were structured and how that affects their lives, as well as the values these people held. A very common trend in the stories was how different men and women were treated and the limitations they may or may not had.
The purpose of this report is to determine if the government is acting fairly in its taxation of the American population, and to point out the waste in government spending. In an article published November 1995, an unknown author explained the need for government "revenue" by defending what the revenue supplies for the people. In America we live within a free enterprise society. A free enterprise system is based on the idea of competition is good and that only the most efficient businesses will survive. The free enterprise system works with the idea that the consumer is somewhat knowledgeable about the products they buy. However, in today's modern world the consumer cannot be always be expected to make an informed decision about something. This is where federal laws are put in place to protect the interest of the public. Examples of such laws are regulations covering quality and safety of home
Steven E. Rhoads wrote an article concerning why the brooding economist is constantly quarreling with congressmen, social workers, engineers, in general all those who seek more money to do good. Economists were alarmed about recreation center costs, because they cared about the victims of heart attacks and slow-learning children. Steven says that “whenever the costs and benefits of one program increase, the expenditures on and benefits from some other program decrease.” Steven believes that Economists keep reminding and lecturing us that there is no such thing as a free lunch, whereas the concept of opportunity costs most people do understand it, and even people who don’t, the concept is a normal aspect of life,Therefore, it is common sense
