I stumbled upon the Bad Moms movie trailer while looking for a piece of media, I chose this composition as it is funny as well as true. This movie trailer spoke to me in relation to this course as it shows realistic struggles women go through as a mother and the expectations they are expected to withhold. It demonstrates how women marginalize other women and how there are expectations of perfection that women are supposed to uphold and if they do they are not looked down upon. The ideas that society has put in our minds is that a woman has to be slim, look perfect and always be ready for a photoshoot. All of the women in this movie trailer have a very similar body type, these women are all slim, tall and beautiful which shows that the movie industry has narrow vision.” The beauty of the woman as objects and screen space coalesce; she is no longer the bearer of guilty but a perfect product, whose body, stylized and fragmented by close-ups, is the content of the film and the direct recipient of the spectator’s look,” (Mulvey, 2006, p. 349). The idea of a women being able to stay fit as well as being on top of all the modern fashion trends, and looking ‘perfect’ is very unrealistic. This is portrayed in the movie trailer when the one mother played by Mila Kunis is in a workout class or when her and her friends are having conversation in regards to her bra. When it comes to women’s careers they are expected to wear appropriate clothing that portrays them as professional, this allows them to be respected in the workplace. “The contemporary economy depends right now on the representation of women within the beauty myth,” (Wolf,1991, p. 18). I grew up reading magazines and gawking over waistlines and standards of beauty that I believed were normal. I can remember the first time I watched the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. It was from a treadmill at the gym. I believe that I could achieve that body from hard work and dieting, but it took years to realize that could never happen. Those women are genetically blessed and they are born to have these types of careers. I believe that this trend of objectifying women is extremely harmful, and shows women that they can never achieve an unrealistic standard of beauty set by the media.
The movie Parenthood (1989) revolves around the psychological stresses that are faced by families. From the name of the movie, the main theme is coined, involving the issues that are faced by parents while raising up their children. The movie is centered in the family of Gil and Karen, and their extended family. Set in a middle-class white society, the anxieties and pains of raising children are presented in the movie. Gil Buckman is a parent and businessman. His wife, Karen, comes out as a nearly perfect parent, and always stays at home. Gil and Karen have three children. The oldest child is Kevin, a nine-year old boy with emotional problems. The emotional problems that are experienced by Kevin form a very significant aspect of the movie,
The movie Parenthood cover’s many of the topics we have discussed this semester in class. But it obviously focused very strongly on parenting and marriage. During the course of the movie we see the four Buckman children’s very different style of parenting. Although all four were raised by the same parents the culture of their individual families are all look very different. Gil Buckman felt abandoned and ignored by his father and therefore responded, with his wife Karen, by being a very active and attentive parent. Gil and Karen are on the authoritative end of the parenting spectrum, and their families’ culture revolves around activities such as baseball games, Kevin’s baseball game, Birthday parties, school plays and basically having fun together (Lecture, 4/22). On the opposite end of the parenting spectrum are Nathan and Susan. They are very authoritarian and reminded me of the “tiger Mom’s” of China. The culture of their family means that they don’t have their daughter in preschool, they are waiting a prescribed amount of time to have a second child and Nathan is continuously drilling facts into their daughter. Susan feels like she should be playing with children her own age but Nathan’s feelings have taken over their family’s culture.
In our society today a business is not a business without an advertisement. These advertisements advertise what American’s want and desire in their lives. According to Jack Solomon in his essay, “Master’s of Desire: The Culture of American Advertising,” Jack Solomon claims: “Because ours is a highly diverse, pluralistic society, various advertisements may say different things depending on their intended audiences, but in every case they say something about America, about the status of our hopes, fears, desires, and beliefs”(Solomon). Advertisers continue to promote the American dream of what a women’s body should look like. They advertise their products in hopes for consumers to buy them, so they can look like the models pictures in the ads. Behind these ads, advertisers tend to picture flawless unrealistic woman with the help of Photoshop. In our society today to look like a model is an American dream and can be the reasons why we fantasizes and buy these products being advertised. “America’s consumer economy runs on desire, and advertising stokes the engines by transforming common objects;signs of all things that Americans covet most”(Solomon).
For women, advertising exemplifies the ideal female body. According to Kilbourne, young girls are taught from a very early age that they need to spend lots of time and money to achieve this “physical perfection.” But realistically this cannot be achieved. The ideal woman’s body is Caucasian, very skinny, big breasts, no flaws, and pretty much no pores. This cannot be achieved because it is physically impossible to look like this; the illusion comes from the secret world of Photoshop. No woman is beautiful enough so they leave it to technology to create perfection. The supermodel Cindy Crawford said, “I wish I looked like Cindy Crawford!” She knew the realities of Photoshop and body image, and more women and girls need to become aware of this as well.
Psychological disorders are very real and present in many people we come in contact with daily, however, are very rarely talked about. Learning about these disorders can help us to understand others and ourselves better by telling us why we do and think the things we do. One effective way that we can observe and learn about psychological disorders is through movies. “Mommie Dearest” was directed by Frank Perry. It is centered around the actress Joan Crawford, who suffered from various psychological disorders. Joan’s daughter, Christina, wrote a book about her mother and her many problems and it was later turned into a movie. It is very effective to use movie analysis as a way of learning, especially in psychology, because it provides a great way to observe without distractions. When you’re looking at disorders, it’s difficult to find a person who has many of these disorders and will allow you to observe them. Psychological disorders can be split into two major groups, personality disorders and mood disorders. Personality disorders are patterns of traits that can get in the way of your social or work life and may interrupt the individual’s normal lifestyle. Mood disorders are inconsistent and unreliable changes in mood by the affected individual. (Rathus, 1998). With all of this being said, it brings me to my point that I will be talking about for the rest of this essay. Joan Crawford demonstrates the personality disorders of histrionic, narcissism, and OCPD. When it comes to mood disorders, Joan demonstrates bipolar disorder.
In society, women relate to friends, models and actresses which are actually people who are in the industry portraying the ‘ideal body.’ Women think too much about what others think of them instead of just caring about themselves. They also choose to take the unhealthy approach and gain all these bad habits to obtain the ‘ultimate’ body image of this ‘ideal woman’ society has created.
The Parenthood film depicts average family that are changing life course which is the building block of many families. We have the father and mother with marital disfigurations of attachments, and lack of attachment between themselves and the relationships involving their four adult children and grandchildren. Furthermore, in this paper a description of accepting the shift generational roles and Structural Theory is analyzed and discussed in an article moreover, the Buckman’s family members accept financial responsibility for self and their families. Thus, women have always felt the need to follow the steps of an ideally beautiful woman, which means to take care of herself, be skinny, were expensive clothes and accessories an wear tons of make-up in order to be attractive. These “haves” are not at all democratic, because by portraying a model of an ideal woman of a society, women will do anything to reach the “perfect” woman. The movie Parenthood revolves primarily around the three generations of the Buckman family. The family is rooted from Frank, who is the patriarch of the Buckmans. Him and his wife Marilyn are the parents of four adults, Gil, Helen, Susan and Larry. Their four children have also developed families of their own. Gil, their eldest son, is married to Karen. Together they are raising three children, Kevin, Taylor and Justin. Helen is a single mother of two teenagers, Julie and Gary. Susan is married to Nathan, who raises their daughter Patty with the goal of educating her into a child prodigy. Lastly, the youngest son of Frank, Larry, is unmarried but has recently just discovered his three year old son. Together, the two generations of offsprings of Frank and Marilyn Buckman demonstrate Alfred Adler’s Birth Order Theory.
In “Just a Mom”, the woman swayed me by using the metaphor of just being a mom. She was passionate about the causing of wanting to get ride at the NDAA. She even made the point that we all stand to be beneficiaries for doing away with the law. The woman was very emotional that also helped with her argument. The downtown Dallas protest was not as successful because their video was all over the place. I could hardly keep up at times and I did even understand what the video was about during the first few minutes. However, I did like that they in listed military people to add a credible source. This image is a representation of the embodiment by society of what an ideal female should look like and is reflected into this Victoria’s Secret advertisement campaign. Drawing on Lock and Nguyen’s (2010) discussion on the natural body this advertisement presents a powerful example of how an ideal persists as the body is objectified to conform to a societal ideal in social representations. It also suggests tht the body is a “homogenious space” , women are classified and objectified and placed in a category and this is what the ‘perfect body’ looks like. We are constantly surrounded by images of the “perfect” woman. She is tall, thin and beautiful. She rarely looks older than 25, has a flawless body, and her hair and clothes are always perfect. She is not human. She is often shown in pieces – a stomach, a pair of legs, a beautifully made up eye or mouth. Our culture judges women, and women judge themselves, against this standard. It is forgotten that “beauty pornography”, as Wolf says, focuses on underweight models that are usually 15 to 20 years old. Flaws, wrinkles and other problems are airbrushed out of the picture.

This trailer emphasizes the roles of woman in society during motherhood, moreover, by leaning towards the contrast of a “perfect” mother. Mila Kunis’s character, Amy, is a member of a society that houses the ideal perfect mother. In which, she struggles with following the guidelines that allude to a perfect family. Therefore, a group of friends and Amy liberate themselves from the stereotypical life of a mother after they become too stressed out. In the trailer Bad Moms, the director uses a sundry of visual, diction, and satirical devices to emphasize the overall message of motherhood into the premise of this trailer.
