Halfway down the driveway, feelings like fainting from exhaustion, almost there, couple hundred more feet. Austin, Nolan, Jaden and myself are running to the hay bales nearest my house. This is the source of excitement of our pathetic lives as sophomores. Four stories of hay bales are stacked by twenty bales wide. The feat we were facing tonight was to climb atop the hay bales to make ourselves feel like we meant something to this universe other than just pets to the high school education system.

For my place narrative assignment, I chose to focus on a place that I not only visit frequently, but truly appreciate: Mount Douglas. This is a place I value not only for its beauty, but for the calmness it allows me to experience as a result of being part of nature. As it turns out, this has been the location of many important histories, dating back hundreds of years, and is still making history today. This history is significant both ecologically, and culturally, and is something I have enjoyed learning about. Through researching this place, and its surrounding area I have come to learn its importance branches far greater than its importance to me.

Voted the second most beautiful vista in America, Mount Washington is a well-known overlook of downtown Pittsburgh. Mount Washington, now a beautiful mountain with a tree covered Cliffside, was not always known for its sights. Many are unaware of the dirty environment that it used to be. Once known as Coal Hill, Mount Washington was the location of many coal mines. Back in the late 1800’s, this mountain was the source that fueled and built Pittsburgh. From the ravaging coal minds to the breathtaking Inclines, there is a lot of history that is hidden under the beautiful area which we now know as Mount Washington.

“Welcome all 2,500 competitors to the 2016 Tough Mountain Challenge!” I heard the emcee yell that over the speakers around the area and my chest seemed to vibrate with the noise coming from them. My eyes seemed to wander around to the many diverse faces lining up at the start. This would be my second year doing the race and I was both nervous yet excited to start. One day I was watching a television show; many people have watched it before and have finished. That show affected me more, in my perspective than anyone else I knew. It was about the past of a high school student and what went on in her life. I never told anyone about my past, this made an old struggle come back even stronger and more difficult to overcome again.
