For my place narrative assignment, I chose to focus on a place that I not only visit frequently, but truly appreciate: Mount Douglas. This is a place I value not only for its beauty, but for the calmness it allows me to experience as a result of being part of nature. As it turns out, this has been the location of many important histories, dating back hundreds of years, and is still making history today. This history is significant both ecologically, and culturally, and is something I have enjoyed learning about. Through researching this place, and its surrounding area I have come to learn its importance branches far greater than its importance to me. Before James Douglas, or any other settlers had arrived, this place was known as PKOLS by the indigenous peoples in the area. PKOLS is located in the W̱SÁNEĆ territory, bordering Lekwungen and was a meaningful meeting place for these two nations as well as with Songhees, and Esquimalt nations. Not only was it significant due to the …show more content…
After years of erosion, made more prevalent due to previous logging practices, there is now barren rock visible in many parts of the mountain. With very little soil on this rock, mosses and lichens grow exclusively on the barren topography. Where there is soil, it is far less rich in nutrients than when it was managed by W̱SÁNEĆ people. Despite this fact, there are still large Douglas Firs (Pseudotsuga menziesii) that grow all over the hill and surrounding park area, accompanied by other smaller trees. Along with these native tree and plant species, there are many invasive species as well. Due to the high volume of human visitors, there is inevitably a large population of introduced species. Though PKOLS may not be as productive of a landscape as it has been in the past, there are still many species that manage to flourish in this
The sound of gun fire echoed across the central plains like deafening crashes of thunder. The rich green grass was slowly turning red with blood, as Native Americans and the United states army were waging war at the battle of the Little Big Horn. Many people know that the Native Americans were victorious over the United states army, which was under the command of General George Custer, but few people know that Custer’s long journey to the Little Big Horn started in the heart of North Dakota, at Fort Abraham Lincoln. Today this beautiful Fort has been reconstructed to have both historical significance as well as a variety of recreational activities, and has been renamed Fort Abraham Lincoln state park. I will be talking about the reconstructed
Frederick Maryland was founded in 1745 by German settlers and has a rich heritage and a rich opportunity of success. Frederick has been home some famous people like the man who wrote the national anthem Francis Scott Key as well as Maryland first elected governor Thomas Johnson. Frederick is also home to a school I fell in love with hood college. Why would one ask? It reminds of home, I envy the education learning and educational opportunities. Hood also has an exceptional athletic program that helps build the true character for a student-athlete.

This past weekend I was able to visit a beautiful treasure hidden in the Kettle Moraine State Forest, Lapham Peak. Lapham peak is conveniently only about twenty minutes from our school and packed full of educational benefits. Between the topography, wildlife diversity, history, and culture preserved at Lapham Peak, many cross curricular standards could be addressed in a short visit to Lapham Peak.
Senator Peter Norbeck was Mount Rushmore's great political patron and promoter of the construction of the giant structure. Norbeck helped raise almost a million dollars for the project during the years of the Great Depression.
I arrived around noon at the Marin Museum of American Indian which was located In Miwok Park. The Museum was a small two story building surrounded by lots of tall, beautiful trees. Thousand years ago this area was an Indian village composed of circular homes, a sweat lodge and a larger ceremonial house. On the right side of the park there was a creek which made this area Ideal location for Native Americans to live because attracted fish and ducks and other foods such as seeds and acorns, deer and rabbits available. The Coast Miwok Indians were hunters and gatherers whose ancestors had occupied the area for thousands of years. About 600 village sites have been identified in the area. They were also considered skillful craftsmen in basketry,
Mount Redoubt is an active volcano. A volcano is an opening on the surface of the Earth letting the hotter material inside escape the mountain or hill. (Magma or Lava) When that magma escapes, the mountain creates an explosion. If a volcano has erupted in the last 10,000 years then it is still considered an active volcano.
The first sign of Mt. St. Helen exploding was a landslide starting at the rim of the summit crater. In 15 seconds, the north side of Mt. St. Helen was making its way down the side of the volcano. After the entire north side had collapsed superheated gasses and lava were released in a massive lateral explosion. This abrupt release of pressure created a nuees arfentes, “which is (in a volcanic eruption) a swiftly flowing, dense cloud of hot gases, ashes, and lava fragments.”1. The nuees arfentes wiped everything within 8 miles almost instantly. The shockwave rolled over the forest for 19 more miles forcing almost all of the centuries old trees to fall towards the north. After those 27 miles the trees remained upright but were burnt to death.
On a chilly, unusual October Wednesday morning, a large group of eighth-grade students from Southern Middle School hopped onto the school bus. They were heading to Mt. Hope Estate, PA, where people held the annual Renaissance Fair.

At high noon at the top of Mount Purgatory on earth following Easter Sunday, my heavenly ascent began as a sphere of fire lifted dropped from the heavens, though the upper atmosphere. This experience of the weightlessness and seeing the ground be low below me, fading away at such a rapid speed was exhilarating. Soon the moon looked larger than ever before as the sphere of fire landed on the pocked surface of the cold planet. Soon after I landed the fiery sphere left me side as a women’s out line appeared on the horizon walking towards me cold form. Soon after this mysterious figure introduced herself to me as
The weekend when I was in high school, my friends and I went camping on Mount Ciremai and planned to climb Mount Cermai. We got to the camping spot as we walked about half an hour from the parking lot. We built a camp beside rocks and trees. It was dark and cold in front of us, so we built a fire.
